No they get way less in uk ....Ireland leads in the free money club

Which makes me thinks this was a group coming over for work...

    Anyways rip, very sad

bigger population means more chance of hiding i guess.

a large number of Chinese immigrants were found dead in the back of a lorry in Calais a few year back i think. A dutch driver was charged by the French police and I guess this meant more checks and tighter security, hence the route through Ireland.

    Sad to hear.

Every freight trailer should have built in carbon dioxide detectors that customs should be able to monitor remotely.

    That's a very good idea.

Presumably they went that way because checks for people smuggling are much lighter on the Cherbourg/rosslare route .

    .

replaced with Cherbourg - Dublin since beginning of year

Also no requirement to carry photo ID, unlike some other EU countries, think in France you must carry photo ID at all times, likely coupled with mobile fingerprint readers.

In the uk there is likely a larger black market to operate within, stashing a dozen or so in a shed, of the back garden isn't unheard of neither - to avoid any real housing costs while earning a couple of quid per hour.

    Very sad.
What a terrible way to go.

Surely the driver must have heard them banging on the inside of the container unless of course it happened while they were in the boat and there was no one around. The terror must have been awful.

Very sad way to go out for sure but these people knew they were taking a risk and it didnt work out for them. Had they made it to their destination they would also have been a burden on the tax payer. The best way to prevent these things happening is to make it not worth their while ie. If they are found to be illigal, send them straight back to where they came from. Give them the most basic accomodation and food rations whilst they are in custody and in the long run, fix the problems they are running from

Yeah, fcuk it, hopefully 39 dead puts them off *sarcasm*

Horrific though it may sound, they might well have been dead by the time they reached Dublin if the Europe-Ireland-UK route is correct

Just talking about this with a lorry driver in the job. He says he knows of plenty of Bulgarian registered, but Irish operated trucks working on the Island of Ireland, And he seems to think that this truck is one of them, and it didn't necessarily travel here from the continent.

    Or on a halting site.

The driver is from County Monaghan according to RTÉ.

WTF Essex Police, since when is County Monaghan in Northern Ireland?

I'm guessing the UK are more generous in terms of benefits.
Not particularly. It is probably a combination of factors.
    English is widely spoken.
    No ID requirements.
    Established communities to help integrate.
General laissez faire approach to regulations like employment or immigration.
    Lower unemployment.

There are two serious aspects of this case:

    1. The fact that 39 people are dead in the back of a lorry.

    2. The fact that Essex Police has said that the driver was from Northern Ireland when in fact he was from County Monaghan. This is a British police force suggesting a territorial claim over a part of another country and it is a monumental disgrace.

Comment above in very poor taste, given the circumstances :(

Seriously? Cop on to yourself. The only important thing here is the death of 39 people.
The nationality of the driver is irrelevant.

Seems to be parked up on an access road in an industrial estate? You might expect it to be backed in near a warehouse and that the discovery was made when they went to unload? Just looks a bit odd.

Such a heartbreaking story, those poor people :(

The fact they said he was from Northern Ireland when he was in fact from County Monaghan. This is an illegal territorial claim as they made out that County Monaghan was in NI.

Isn't it bad enough they have the Six Counties?

There is a series on youtube of officials seeking out illegals hiding aboard containers etc at Calais as they try to be smuggled to the UK. They do have CO2detectors and they also make full use of sniffer dogs.

The sheer scale of the traffic going through makes a check on every vehicle not feasible

If you google "smuggling people in at Calais" videos?

Looks like trailer is a Global Trailer Rentals Limited one going by a quick snatch of the back of the trailer on BBC News

They have an office in Dublin and solo business check shows registered address in Co Monaghan

Priti Patel also said that he was from Northern Ireland.

COUNTY MONAGHAN IS IN THE REPUBLIC YOU STUPID WOMAN!

    Rant over.

Suffocation is a painful and terrifying death that no one deserves.

    Arrested for murder ?
    What the hell happened ?
Surely he was just driving illegal immigrants, I mean manslaughter at the most.

    I would say he knew.

This was not one or two guys trying to cut their way into a lorry.

In the context of what has just happened it is pathetic to be ranting about this.

Its a mistake, I doubt the UK police are trying to claim Monaghan. Don't be so stupid.

I think with the number involved it would be very unlikely he did not know.
