Check out Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. It's a fantastic song and simple too. I can't think of too much I know that's modern to be honest.

As a struggling beginner, the biggest problem is finding songs that I can strum and sing at the same time. I find that the easiest way of approaching this is to choose songs with simple strumming patterns:

The Scientist (by Coldplay) : the easiest beginner lesson is at

Viva La Vida (either use straight eighth note strumming) or try this strumming:

The House of the Rising Sun (with two downstrums per chord)

I have over 1,700 songs in easy-to-play chords and lyrics format on my website ( PJs Guitar Chords and Lyrics ). The range is from Beatles/Dylan up to the latest songs by Killers, Snow Patrol, Katy Perry etc.

Pick an artist you really like, or browse the Misc. Rock, Pop, Folk, Soul etc. pages. I'm sure you'll find a bunch of songs you'd like playing, and my interpretations are as simplified as you'll find 'em - e.g. for songs in tricky keys, I've transposed to an easier key, and indicated which fret you should capo.

If you're a very early learner, find songs you are comfortable with at first ( 3 or 4 chords, with infrequent chord changes ), and aim to improve to a level where you can play the more challenging ones, once you've passed the sore fingers and early frustrations every guitar player has to get thru.

    Enjoy your music!

Just a 'heads-up' - since posting this, I have moved PJs Guitar Chords and Lyrics to a new domain - http://www.guitarsongs.info . The old pages will remain in place for a short time, while I complete the transition, but will then be 'dead links'. So for anyone coming across this post, please use the Chord & Lyrics link here, anyone who may have bookmarked the link, please update to www.guitarsongs.info
