Hey everyone, have been bulldozed by what I think is ADHD for the last few years and it's ruining my life, finally ready to go and get some help.

I've done lots of research especially regarding medication. Has anyone had some good experiences with some experts in the area?

From my research, it seems that it really helps having a doctor who knows their stuff on the emphasized topic and medication so I'd love to find someone like that. What I mean is, it seems that the medicating process is very personalized and involves lots of analysing and changing around and so I'd love someone who is experienced and really supportive with this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, would love to hear your experiences

Hi Supersonic, sorry to hear what you're going through. Medical advice should be given by a medical professional and not over an internet forum. You say you've done some research on the medication already. I'd ask you to consider if it works in a disease centered way or a drug centered way?

Hi Freedive, to be honest I'm just looking for if anyone's had any positive experiences and would give me a name or contact I could get in touch with, that's all.

I'm not too sure what you mean, but I've been somewhat anti-med since a teenager but in the last couple of months I've had a change in attitude towards this as I would be open to medication despite hearing of some negative side effects. Is that what you meant?

    Thanks for your reply

Don't have any recommendations unfortunately, I'm not anti-med myself. I am anti the dominance of it and the long term use of it is questionable. What I mean in drug vrs disease centered is, if disease centered what is it correcting? If it's drug centered what else needs to happen or are we informed of all the pros and cons of taking it long term.

Eg, disease centered: T2 diabetes, we can measure the average blood sugar count of someone (Hba1c) and if they are above a certain threshold prescribe an amount of medication. We can then perform the same "diagnostic" Hba1c count again and see if it has come down enough. This may not be the greatest example as other interventions may also be applied but hopefully you get the idea.

Drug centered: I have a painful ankle, so I take a pain killer. My pain has gone but the drug hasn't fixed my ankle. It may however allow me undergo physiotherapy to fix my ankle that otherwise may feel too painful. Maybe my ankle can't be fixed like that and I need to continue with the pain medication. But if this is the case I should be told that the pain medication may impact on other parts of my body as well.

Informed decision making, where the person who ends up taking the treatment is fully involved in the process and understands the clinicians advice, is (imho) where we should be.

Hi op, my son has ADHD and is on ritalin. We were HUGELY hesitant to put him on it, for lots of reasons but now that he's on it it has been a lifesaver. It's not a fix, but it enables him to have hours in the day where he can direct his focus, where he can funnel his creativity and gives him and his classmates respite from the huge sensory load that makes it difficult for him to socialise and learn. ADHD Ireland have fantastic resources on their website and social media pages. I'd highly recommend giving them a call as well, I spoke to them on the phone and they were very helpful. They can put you in touch with services and support groups. It's a good place to start.
