It's been unusually windy in Ireland this year. Is there any specific reason why?

The jet stream, of course. Thanks. Loled at the beans. Should have but didn't expect that.

Has it? Are the averages up? Certainly standout wind events were way down over the winter period than the previous one.

They sure are. Using the short IMT series, which incorporates data from 11 met stations, it has been the windiest first half the the year in at least 10 years.

Interestingly, MSLP values are well up this year so far, averaging at 2.7 hPa above nationally speaking but compared with 2010, which was the least windiest year for this period, pressure gradients are up. In 2010, there was a mean difference of just over 1.0 hPa between Malin Hd and Johnstown Castle during the period Jan 1 - Jul 14; this year, the the difference is closer to 2.2 hPa.

All data used from Met.ie and Ogimet with means centered around the 2007 - 2015 average.

Yep, definitely breezy this summer more than normal, I think while there's not been that much rain compared to some summers, the constant breezy weather means that you rarely get a day with absolutely no rain/cloud. I don't think it's a wet summer that people are complaining about, it's the fact that there's been so few cal, dry days with prolonged sunshine.

Today I was out in the afternoon in the garden and it was pretty pleasant. But it was dull/cloudy this morning, and got breezy and cold by 7/8ish. Needing to put on a jumper on a July evening sucks!

Indeed, a near constant breeze without any really strong winds or calm periods.
The persistence of the breeze is what's noticeable; especially for bbq fans.

Interesting recent write up by the UK Met Office on this very topic.

Especially especially for newbie cyclists! I can take a bit of rain, hail, snow, sun, fog, or lightning when I'm cycling, but the constant head wind can do one!
