    Emerson, Lake and Palmer were a prog rock band, very big in the early to mid 1970s. They were among the earliest users of synthesisers. I think a lot of their work can be deemed "experimental."

    Take a listen to Abbadon's Bolero from their 1972 album Trilogy:

    Wouldn't say they were experimental, more classical/jazz/prog based supergroup trio (ELP = The Nice, King Crimson, Atomic Rooster) known for excessive keyboard/percussive virtuoso performances.
    Emerson convinced Dr Bob Moog that the synthesizer could become a stage instrument and thus the Minimoog was developed.
    Crowning glory probably Brain Salad Surgery, Emerson continued as a significant composer after ELP up until his tragic end in 2016.
