I've gotten the Oculus Go and its great fun. I hear the Rift is even more immersive,

How far can the tech go without a platform to walk/run on ?

I have tried the Vive with a few games, and it's very much depending on the game. For example, playing ping pong felt really great. At the other end of the spectrum, some titles gave me motion sickness very quickly.
Same type of experience I had with the Samsung Gear VR.

Now, I just bought a Windows Mixed Reality headset to use with driving games. I have a G920 wheel, and the immersion is amazing. Force feedback helps a lot, and as long as I don't lose control of the car, there's no motion sickness. I could play for hours, if I had the time!

So, to sum up my experiences: immersion varies mostly with the game played, and how it uses the hardware you have.
