Guess I'm old-fashioned - I was taught to sign my name at the end of a letter or note, and that's just what this is, right?

Please ignore it if it somehow gives you offence.

    Yeah, never happened. ;)

Hear the Swiss Guards have openings.

Requirements for becoming a Swiss Guard
    1. Must be male. ...
    2. Must be Roman Catholic.
    3. Must be a citizen of Switzerland.
    4. Must be at least 1.74 meters tall.
    5. Must be between 19 and 30 years of age. ...
    6. Must be single. ...
    7. Must have a high school degree or a professional diploma.
    8. Must have completed service with the Swiss army.
I would respectfully suggest that although most of the checks might just be posssible, 3 and 8 are not. 8 at a pinch, but remember that the subject must have been examined in German/French or Italian - or all three - and in a Swiss establishment of learning.

I've heard that the Afghan mountains in winter are practically tropical. Great for topping up the tan that you get from the St Tropez training camp.

Yes, and the locals are very hospitable. They welcome foreigners with open arms, especially those in military uniform.

The French Foreign Legion is a real holiday camp. Plus you get to meet some lovely French people.

There are not !!! In some parts of Afghanistan, in mid summer ( when it's definitely hot 40c+ ) You can still see see snow in the mountain's and in Winter proper...depending on the location, travel is impossible..and if the weather was a problem..there is s bigger one lurking...Taliban /isis.
But apart from all that...well worth seeing!;)

Yeah learning French would be a bonus. Did German and school and haven't a word of French.

You will learn that pretty quick...all instruction's order's etc, are in French in the Legion. You would be well advised to start taking french lessons ASAP.

I have been toying with the idea of signing up, is there an upper age limit? Is my being a bit overweight and a little unfit going to be a problem? I did get a C in honours LC French more than 20 years ago if that helps? I assume they will make me an officer, given my vast experience.

Edit: I don’t really like hot weather, would prefer the autumn or spring training program.

You would imagine that after all the help he got here, that at least he would post about his experience's??? I guess the Legion just did not live up to his standard's....:o

A later documentary called Follow That Camel probably does a better job of separating the myth from reality.
