To be fair, RTE Prime Time has been VERY good on exposing scandals and was the main outlet that blew the lid off many of the abuse scandals, financial scandals, corruption scandals etc etc. It's pretty solid public service investigative journalism.

Also George Lee was highlighting the financial crisis years before it happened in 2008.

RTE News in general can be quite bland though.

Just stick to news, current affairs, the odd culture and community piece, sport and weather. Maybe a lifestyle show or two would be ok too. Stop with the talking shops of Tubs, D'arsey, Finucane and Duffy. The latter's 30 year macabre passion for death and human misery is beyond all comprehension.

    I don't get the relevance.

Joking aside, Liveline is something that has had a power to effect change, and raise awareness of scandals, scams and societal issues.

It's been going for a long time. Jerry Springer didn't start out as the ultra-sleazy circus it ended up being but that's what got ratings. It was an evolution. I wonder if Liveline evolved into what it is because when you give people an open platform to talk, what they'll mostly do is complain?

Forget the presenters. 71,000 average salary sounds obscene.

    And 2000 employees

    And 2000 employees

10% of which are on paid career breaks at any one time.

    That's ridiculous.

Does that negate any of his questions about rte in the article I linked?

So instead of fixing the useless RTE Player , just add an RTE2+1 channel instead .

What a shambles RTE is -

Will the "stars" of RTE get repeat fees if it goes ahead ?

They've 10 people running it. One on career break.

TV3's average salary is less than half of RTE's at 34,000.

Nugent is probably delighted - the prick would happily show rugby all hours of the day if he could. Surprised he hasn't got the Leinster School's Cup on broadcast.

They lost the final and highlights. They still have a game every week. People really do like to dramatise things on here.

If they had more money they'd probably have all the Champions League. Instead Virgin Media has it.

They get the 2nd picks of the Tuesday games. TV3 get first dibs on the Tuesday and now Wednesday games along with Europa league.
If you want to watch club football then RTE comes low down on the list of channels to see it on.
For a rugby man,Ryle did a piss poor job of holding onto coverage. 6 Nations gone, Rugby WC on Eir.

Wrong. They have first pick on Tuesday.

Yup because he lost literally every sporting event or license that he bid for, they lost the rugby world cup and six nations, they no longer have any pro14 games, then theres new football adjustments and they have vastly reduced gaa coverage. He oversaw a literal demolishing of the entire RTE sports department as they simply don't have anything to show anymore.

Why is Ryle Nugent being blamed for the GAA not allowing more games to be shown on television?

If they can’t bid enough to secure the rights and are being outbid by TV3, maybe that suggests that they do need more funding.

I bet if he put together an attractive enough offer they would have no problem but again he seems incapable of doing that as he has lost pretty much every bid he went in for

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,568 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

They already have way more funding than TV3 as they have a larger audience so can charge more for adverts and get the vast majority of the license fee, if they cannot compete with TV3 it indicates a systemic problem on how they operate, ie as has been pointed out many times their bloated salaries that the same people would be unable to get anything close to at another station and well documented outdated work practices

RTE is and has always been so badly run its hard to know where to start.
The cost over-runs are many and common.
Little things like the cost of sending an entry to Eurovision, something like 100k+.
    Aertel.
Paying over the odds to mediocre presenters in generic presenting jobs that anyone could do.
Live sports programs - 3 analysts on the panel, one or two presenters, commentator and co commentator - pitchside reporter.
Commissioning drama programs which continuously flop.
2FM - heavily subsidised and does nothing that a hundred other independent stations don't do.
    Two orchestras.
