I personally use Open DNS, no issues.

if you type in an invalid url they may show an advert, that is how it's paid for btw.

Irish ISP's aren't all that reliable - eircom especially have had a lot of problems in the past. UPC's one is lame and again seems to be about ads.

you could use 8.8.8.8 and let google know more about you than they already do ...

Bottom line, for home user OpenDNS is the biz, Because you can get it to filter out nasty sites by category if you sign up. It's not perfect as a net nanny but security is all about layers and defense in depth , and it's a good start and it's free.

OpenDNS does not conform to DNS standard behaviour. It never returns a 'not found' for a search. If the name searched for doesn't exist, a search page address is returned.
This is supposedly something that can be disabled, if you log in, but I have never been able to disable it with any success.

You should try out namebench. It uses a benchmark to find the fastest DNS servers available for your computer using your web browser history, tcpdump output.
