Vintage Radio Noob question TRF "Straight" Regenerative

    Reading through websites and magazine articles one sees frequent references to TRF "Straight" and Regenerative reciever types.

    Werre they different names for essentially the same thing and if not how were they different ?

    Ive never seen a set with a "reaction" control how common were they ?

    Its often stated that these sets had poorer selectivity than superhets yet people used to pick up MW stations from far and wide on them how was this possible ?

    Well, 'regenerative' is in reference to the operation of a type of amplifying component, 'TRF' operation & layout of a receiver type, not necessarily employing a regenerative component.

    So if im taking you up correctly a TRF reciever may or may not be regenerative ?

    Does that mean a Straight reciever is the non-regenerative subtype of TRF ?

    Yeah, it's just a receiver type that uses multiple amplification stages, without heterodyning, so all stages have to be tuned to the desired frequency, rather than just tuning the 1st, & the rest being fixed at the IF.
