Avanmore River from Laragh to the Meeting of the Waters

    I was wondering if anyone here knows the stretch of the Avonmore river from Laragh to the Meeting of the Waters. I was planning to paddle down the stretch on the weekend, but I've only paddled on fairly flat rivers, lakes and a little on the sea.

    A friend told me it's all flat along that stretch, no white water. Can anyone confirm?

    This is a guide to the upper sections of the river http://www.irishwhitewater.com/river_guide/river.php?id=315
    There is no on line guide for that section but it is in the Irish White Water Guide Book, most kayaking shops will have it.
    The section you are talking about is about 7km and takes quite a long time. There are a few rapids but it will be very low at the moment. Really it will be too low. If you live in Wicklow you could get in touch with these guys http://www.wicklowmountainskayakclub.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1

    Hi, thanks for the reply. I looked the online guide, alright, and it looks above my ability, to be honest. The stretch I was thinking of doing is about 19 or 20km (that's as accurate as I could get plotting it on the map). I was thinking about 5 hours at 4km/h, which is pretty slow.

    When you say it will be too low, would there be any problem hopping out and walking the low stretches? I've seen the river at various places, Avondale, Rathdrum, the park at Clara Lara, and the Meetings, at it always seems passable, I'm more worried about dangers on the river than anything else, or awkwards spots I should know about in advance.

    5 hours should be about right. Getting out at the shallow bits would be no problem, but at the current level you would have to do it a lot! I haven't done that section for almost a year but things to watch out for are trees and last time I was on it there was works on the base a railway bridge but that was well sign posted in advance.

    Savage, thanks. I'll have a go, so, and if it turns out I'm having to deboard every two minutes, I'll only go as far as Clara Vale.
