Does anyone on here use it? How are you getting on with it and does it make a difference? I was thinking of starting it, but I'm unsure as to whether it works or not as I've read about some people experiencing an increased shedding of hair on it.

    Ta.

It does work. The oil is better than the foam, so I would suggest that you use oil in the evening, and foam in the morning - foam absorbs way easier, but it's not as good.

But yes, it does work, however it's 50/50 as to its effects on hairline.

If you want almost guaranteed results for hairline, you need propecia/generic finasteritde, and then, minoxidil.

Ive being using it morning and night along with with Proscar 1.25mg daily over the past while. Ive being using the Regaine for about 9 months and the Proscar for about 8 months.

I had receeded badly at the temples and thinned out at the front of my hairline and also at the crown. Nine months on have I noticed an improvement?

No real regrowth at the temples, where I had started gradually receeding years back if I'm honest. At the frontal hairline I may have had some regrowth but very very marginal if I did. Really and truly if there is any difference its probably because the hairs I hadn't lost in that area have thickened up somewhat. At the crown though there is a definate improvement. Hair is thick there pretty much like I was a teeneager again;)

I think its worth noting that you need patience with these treatments as you certainly wont see results overnight. When I started using the Regaine I seriously shed hair for the first few weeks. Although that was not easy to deal with it was in fact was a good sign. Without getting too scientific about it the weak fragile hair thats on the verge of falling out is forced to fall out as a thicker stronger hair takes root in the folicule underneath.

Overall I think it very much depends on how much hair youv'e lost already and how long for. Probably depends on the guy using it too as much as anything else as some will show better results than other. You might be lucky and regrow some hair but generally speaking I'd say not. Main thing is that it probably slows down the rate you loose your hair at immensly if used correctly.

However, I think using Regaine alone is just buying you time. If you are suspectable to male pattern baldness then you'd probably end up at the same place eventually if using regaine, just that place will be further on down the line if you know what I mean.

If you are suspectable to male pattern baldness I believe that you really need to take medication that will supress the dht that causes it over the longer term. Not a decision that should be entered into lightly either. There are many men who report side effects such as poor labedo, difficulty in getting and maintianing erections, sore testicles, and even depression in extreme situations. Also worth noting that you should not use the medication if your girlfriend/ wife/ partner is pregnant or if getting pregnant is a possibility as it is very harmful to the male fetus.

I wont go into too much information as I'm not a doctor or otherwise suitably qualified to dish such advice. All I'll say is that taking the drug has not caused me any problems worth noting so far. On and off over over the first couple of months of taking it I got a very very faint dull pain in my groin area that would last a few seconds, maybe a minute absolute max. It was very very bearable, a sensation more than a pain and may not even have being related to the medication for that matter and all I know. Thats not to say the next guy wont have any of the afore mentioned symptoms and maybe more as were all different. I just would advise doing some intense research before deciding if the drug is right for you and going on it.

Just one more thing and on a side note to the OP. I think this forum is completely the wrong place for these kind of threads. The almost default answer seems to be do yourself a favour and get a razor, man up and shave it all off, there are no cures available etc etc etc....which is quite sad really

Sad, maybe - or else facing up to reality...

Is it funny? or is it sad? that this particular thread was on the top of Page 1 of this forum (and over a week old) when I came here to get a link while making this post?

My own take on the appearance of my head: I can't see it from here - unless I use a mirror.

And get a Wahl - I presume you already have a razor. Although shaving your head is a lot quicker, and longer lasting. Time is a marketable commodity, apparently.

Maturity happens. Hair appears on the lower part of the face (and elsewhere). Hair disappears from the top of the head. In general, obviously. Some races do not display these characteristics. You can't thwart your genes (at the current state of knowledge).

Maybe just per chance really more than anything else...lets face it the forum is hardly a very busy one

Thats your own personal point of view and while I don't personally agree with it I do respect your opinion...every man to himself and all that. I am assuming on the basis of your post that you are bald or have at least balded somewhat. You would seem to be pretty confident in and have totally accepted the appearance of your hair. For that I say more power to you...I very much admire a guy, in particular a young guy who is able to so freely accept what is, lets face it often a dramatic change in their appearance.

However, for some guys, myself included, its not always so easy to accept such a change. Since my early teens I've considered my hair and the way I style it a big part of me and my identity. As I believe I mentioned in my previous post my hair receeded and thinned somewhat in recent years. It didn't bother me too much at first until it got to a certain point at which I decided to take action. As I believe I also previously mentioned even the best products available on the market can only do so much for you...very little if anything worth in terms of regrowing lost hair but they certainly at least buy you time in terms of retaining the hair you have.

As for the reason I just mentioned I decided to go on these products. If they help me maintain my remaining hair thats fantastic, I'll be happy I done something about it. If not, well thats not the end of the world either, I'll just get on with things...its not like its a life threatening disease or illness either. As you mention its purely genetics at work.

The products are by no means cheap, especially if you are buying them in the branded form. But the way I see it is that I would rather spend a few quid on them rather than on the likes of a new golf tdi which is worth €5 -7k less a year later. They do take some committment too. For myself who never took tablets before apart from a course of anti-biotics a few years back when I got bad bronchi influenza it was a bit of a culture shock getting into the routine of taking the tablet each morning and applying the minoxidil morning and evening, but you do get into it eventually.

For some guys the wahl or mach 3 is just the ticket if they are experiencing hair loss and thats fantastic. It wasn't my intention to insult or be slighting to anyone in particular when I wrote the last paragraph in my previous post. Just to recap: -

"Just one more thing and on a side note to the OP. I think this forum is completely the wrong place for these kind of threads. It does somewhat annoy me though when somebody starts a thread asking for advice on a particular product used to treat male pattern baldness or asking specific questions about male pattern baldness and they get such responses. I'm sure they know full well that wahls and mach 3's are available and an option for them but I just don't see how such response ad any value or are indeed appropriate for such threads.

Tried Finasteride and my body couldn't handle it, the side affects hit me but I made a full recovery within 3 months(the worst side affect Gyno, stopped immediately and is not big enough to be noticable to touch or painful etc..a doctor may notice if they checked). Using Minoxidil and Nizoral atm, I have tiny white hairs on the balding part. Been that way for ages. I think you'll be very lucky if Minox works on it's own. Imo you should try Finasteride and if you get a bad side affect of it just quit it and go for Minox alone. 150-250 a year for the 3 of them together. So long as you don't buy brand names and go for generic brands.

Edit--- well I had FIinasteride sitting around there...gonna try it again and see what happens this time. Taking 0.625 this time. I've heard of some peopel who couldn't handle it being able to take it after stopping for a while.

I'm far from a young guy! :) I first became aware that I was losing hair at 28 when my sister (a hairdresser, who used to always cut my hair) said "You're getting thin on top here". Wha'? She showed me with a mirror, and sure enough there was some loss on the very crown. I don't know how long it would have taken me to become aware if she hadn't told me. Ignorance was bliss!

I didn't worry much about it, and it progressed fairly slowly. I never considered any type of treatment or transplant. Eventually, after a bit time combing over, a bit more time combing back (I was 'lucky' to have a good clump growing at the front...) I eventually bought a Wahl clipper.

Now, I cut it regularly (sometimes every few days, sometimes weekly, sometimes at longer intervals). These days, I do a zero (i.e. no limiter fitted to the Wahl); I used to use a 1 or a 2. Sometimes I shave, either with an electric razor (takes me 15-20 minutes to get everything smooth, you need to clean the heads a few times) or a wet razor which I find much much faster, you just have to cut it as short as possible with the clipper first. Like when shaving your face, you have to power flush the razor every couple of strokes to stop it getting clogged.

I find it easier not to use a mirror with the wet razor - you can cut yourself too easily on some awkward strokes when the mirror-image confuses you into moving the razor the wrong way. You just need to check with your other hand whether or not you need to go over any particular section again.

Plenty of after-shave balm after whichever method...

You make a fair point. However, this is the BG&RH forum, so it is to be expected that regular posters here might have a somewhat fatalistic attitude. I don't know if your point would apply to the same extent in another, more serious, forum (not AH, obviously )

Anyway, I respect your decision to try to reverse any existing hair loss and to minimise future loss.

Hey guys, where would a fella who is thinning out in front get any of these products Minoxidil, Finasteride, and the main one Propecia? Another friend who is also going light on top was recently telling me about Propecia and I am mad to get my hands on it at this stage! (before it gets any worse)

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,631 ✭✭✭Doctor Jimbob

Honestly, I tried all this for a while and it's really more hassle than it's worth. Far too much time and money.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,361 ✭✭✭Nodferatu

Where can you buy propecia, and is it tablet form or liquid etc? I just bought regaine foam for first time on first day of it but read so many bad comments about it!!! Am i better to buy generic cheap brand of minoxidil or regaine etc and where do you buy propecia?? Chemists dont stock much

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Propecia/Fin is proscription only, generic minoxodil is fine and much cheaper than regaine, exactly the same stuff.

How is advising somebody not to takw a drug with PROVEN ireversible side-effects "Medical advice"?.

Also it cannot be legitimately prescribed for hair loss as it is a cancer medication.
he there i went to my dermatologist 3 weeks ago and she prescribed me proscar

So a skin specialist is prescribing a hormone based DHT-blocker with no action whatever on the skin?

You're obviously a shill of some sort.

Telling people not to take a drug is medical advice. Do you stand by your comment that people have a very good chance of getting sides if they take this drug. Also to other posters this clown does not even know that dermatology is the study of hair skin and nails. Yes this drug is fda approved for hairloss. Chopper has shown himself to be a simpleton. Pm me lads if ye want know about preventing hairloss in my experience.

No..in this case it's common sense.

The "offical" number on the label is 2%...the actual percentage is far higher.

So NOT to do with the hormonal/endocrine system and most certainly not Oncology?

Sounds to me like you've a few bottles of this stuff you bought of fteh internet and you wanna sell them on.

But yeah..anybody wanting to know about preventing hairloss should PM you and absolutely not study any of the thousands of cases of perment,life-destroying side-effects of this drug.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,610 ✭✭✭iebamm2580

You said a very good chance of developing sides but you can only say the incidence of sides is far higher than 2%. What % is a very good chance. Your point was that a dermatologist can only advise on skin problems which shows you have no idea what your talking about. Lads look up any medication and you will find horror stories online. Chopper stick to posting on subjects you know. You even said it cant br prescribedfor hairloss which again is totally Iiinaccurate.

I'll just drop this in from the forum charter:
    No serious threads
There are plenty of forums sprinkled around Boards.ie that will cater for serious discussion on beer, food and such like. If there is one thing that can be guaranteed, it is that you won't get a serious response from the vast majority of people here, mods included. This is a silly forum. Expect silly responses.

I bought minoxidil when in the states 6 months ago. It worked really well. So I ordered some on line....a years supply from the states.
I got a letter today from HPRA saying they have my stuff and they are going to destroy it as you can not import any medicines form outside Ireland.
Does anyone know anywhere I can get minoxidil in Ireland...not regain as its over priced. All the google results link me to UK suppliers which is great but impossible.
Can I get it up north?

It is seized if inspected, you can't import it. They do consider it a medicine or health product or whatever.

I order mine from the biovea website and I'm fairly sure it comes from outside Ireland. It has always arrived and I've never had a problem.

I have purchased Kirkland signature minoxidil on Ebay from the states for the last 4 years or so, 6 months supply at a time. The sellers I bought from varied depending on the best price at the time but "Rokbuy" were usually the best. Indeed they used to send a 10% off next purchase coupon, meaning I could get the order for around €30! Things seemed to have changed however, they have doubled their prices and the next best I can see will cost around €50 incl. shipping from the UK??
