Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Native fish tank

    I have a 250l coldwater tank with a few dannios,a mutant comet and a weather loach. I would be interested in getting rid of them and keeping fish such as Rudd or Perch for something different and because they are native fish.

    Firstly,would either of these species have any issues being kept in a tank and secondly is there anybody who supplies such fish in Ireland?

    I could probably catch them myself in the canal but my luck has been terrible lately!

    Hi OP,

    This is a bad idea on so many levels. The filtration needed to keep these fish would be so big that it would not be feasible. Fish like Rudd, Roach etc are very dirty and you would have to supplement their diet with alot of live foods which would further dirty your tank. You would essentially need filtration capable of turning your tank over 20 times an hour at a minimum.

    I would even go as far as to say that keep goldfish in this size tank is a bad idea.

    I would recommend you move to either some of the smaller fancy goldfish (be again these are very dirty) or better yet, move to a tropical tank.

    Thanks for that. I keep mutant comet in the tank because i bred him myself from pond stock and he hasnt't gotten any bigger in 4 years...he was the offspring of a fantail and a Comet..weird looking thing but he's the only goldfish i keep since i got rid of my pond.

    Point taken on the wild fish though..thanks :)

    Why not do a small native tank with sticklebacks etc and natural plants/wood I'm sure it would be cool, it would definitely be unique
