Hi all,

How to find a professional for staining hardwood

    My sister in law had carpenter come in to install some Ash hardwood shelves/presses. He said he wouldn't do the staining or varnish finish for fear of messing it up. She's quite happy with the shelves, but wants to get it properly finished, stained and painted by a professional.

    How do I go about finding someone to do this? Is there a listing I'm missing or a community that I could go to.

    does your SIL have any offcuts of wood on which a stain coudl be tested?
    also, if they're already coated, a stain would not penetrate properly AFAIK.

    Hey, thanks for the reply. Sorry for the slow response. She doesn't have any off cuts and the wood isn't already coated. The carpenter was quite wary of placing anything on the wood until it's been properly finished. Even warned against placing hands on it as the grease could stain it permanently.

    I'm afraid you picked one of the most difficult woods to stain. The alternating hardness of the growth rings in ash means it will absorb stain very unevenly. It was probably never used in fine furniture for that reason.
    If you use a varnish it will at least turn a golden colour. Otherwise spirit stains are well absorbed -- the Carpentry store in Naas might have some in the 'Chestnut' range as they can't be bought online.
    Also,a bit of research might yield an American product which are increasingly available here.
