The Walking Dead Officially Renewed for Season 10

The Walking Dead has officially been renewed for a 10th season at AMC.

    https://twitter.com/WalkingDead_AMC/status/1092528299102949378?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1092528299102949378&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ffanfest.com%2F2019%2F02%2F04%2Fthe-walking-dead-officially-renewed-for-season-10%2F

A tenth season was heavily speculated and all but guaranteed. According to recent interviews with showrunner Angela Kang, the next season was even already being planned, however, the news wasn’t official until Monday afternoon. The upcoming tenth season will be the first full season without the series’ star Andrew Lincoln, though it’s possible that he may be returning behind the cameras to direct.

Next weekend, the series returns for its second half of season nine after introducing one of the most intriguing and terrifying villainous groups yet, The Whisperers. The synopsis for the second half of season nine teases “disturbing and terrifying” trouble ahead as we dive deeper into their world. Check out the synopsis for season 9b below.

“The second half of “The Walking Dead” Season 9 finds our groups of survivors, both old and new, continuing to deal with the impact of events that took place during the six years that have passed. Since the disappearance of Rick, many of these characters have become strangers to each other, and in some ways, strangers to themselves. What they do know is that they are in undeniable danger. They will soon realize the world just beyond does not operate as they thought. The group’s rules and ways of survival no longer guarantee their safety. A whole new threat has crossed their paths, and they soon discover it’s unlike any threat they have encountered or endured before. The group will start to question what they think they see. What may appear to be normal in this post-apocalyptic world could actually be more disturbing and terrifying than when the apocalypse first broke out. All that is certain is the stakes are high and numerous.”

    Maggie spinoff possibly in development

Among the many ideas being talked about for The Walking Dead's expanding universe is a Maggie-centric spinoff series.

Lauren Cohan exited The Walking Dead in Season Nine, making her final appearance at the same time as Rick Grimes actor Andrew Lincoln. The door was left open for Cohan to reprise her role as Maggie in the future but the actress is now admitting to the possibility of that return coming in her own series.
"There may have been some conversations but everything is so early days ambiguous," Cohan told THR. "Me, as much as anybody, we'll have to see what happens."

Though a Cohan-lead spinoff seems to have been discussed behind-the-scenes and could technically be described as "in development," fans should not be anticipating the The Walking Dead's Maggie show just yet.

It's all a much different tune than the one which The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang sang while talking to ComicBook.com. With the show being renewed for Season 10 earlier this week, Kang's plans from last year to have Cohan return as Maggie seemed to be coming to fruition.
"I'm already working on Season 10 stuff," Kang told ComicBook.com in November of 2018. "Yeah, trying to get a little bit of a jump on it, so after I do this round of press calls today I'm actually gonna jump back in with a couple of my senior writers and we're gonna talk about some stuff, just because it's like we want to get a head start on things. But it's sort of like the process doesn't end on our side of it, because it takes about a year and a half to make a season of the show, but we always air about the same time every year, so there's always about like a half a year overlap."

While rumors have long swirled in regards to Cohan's contract negotiations with The Walking Dead and AMC as a network, the actress does not seem to be holding any grudges having graduated (if only temporarily) to her new Whiskey Cavalier series. "I don't even think that it was bad," Cohan said. "It was like, I've done the show for a long time. It was a long time to be in any character and sometimes you just get quiet and listen to your inner-guidance and it's time to multitask."

Cohan also won't reveal any definitive answers as to whether or not she will be returning to The Walking Dead. "We'll see what happens," Cohan said.

I would guess maybe her choice? With bigger parts in upcoming movies maybe she thought it was best to move on from TV? Hopefully they start to wrap things up in the next season with all the major characters having departed. Would like to see an ultimate tie in with FTWD to finish it off.

Lauren Cohan Has Confirmed That She’s ‘Not Done’ Playing Maggie On ‘The Walking Dead’
Lauren Cohan hasn’t appeared on The Walking Dead since last November, when Maggie confronted Negan over the death of her husband Glenn. That’s because the talented actress has a project of her own: ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier, maybe the gutsiest show on television (never forget the exploding tampon promo). Cohan intends to return to her zombie-killing roots, though: during her appearance on Wednesday’s episode of Busy Tonight, she told host Busy Philipps that she misses The Walking Dead, “but I’m not done. I’m not done.”

“We’re hoping we go back. It’s just trying to live in the unknown… ing, the unknowing, yeah"

Following the Walking Dead midseason finale, showrunner Angela Kang and chief content officer Scott Gimple released a statement about Cohan’s future. “Maggie’s last episode this season was 905,” it read. “But it isn’t the end of Maggie’s story. We love Lauren Cohan and hope to have her back on the big program and or beyond, and we have built a story to service that.” It sounds like The Walking Dead creative team and Cohan (who moved on before she felt too “comfortable” playing Maggie for so long) are on the same page, then, despite a recent salary rift.

Season 10 will premiere on Sunday, October 6th on AMC

The official Season 10 trailer will drop during the show's panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 19.

    What we know so far (mild spoilers);

The Walking Dead will return for Season 10 on AMC this fall. It'll be showrunner Angela Kang's second season at the helm, and Norman Reedus' first full season as the top-billed star. Executive producer and special effects guru Greg Nicotero will be back to direct and come up with gross zombies.

It will be Danai Gurira's final season. Gurira will be exiting the series at some point during Season 10. Details about her departure are being kept under wraps for now, but considering how Michonne has not given up on looking for Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), and that she journeys away from Alexandria in the comics, it seems like a good bet that she'll show up in one of the Rick Grimes TV movies.

Lauren Cohan may return. Cohan made an open-ended exit in Season 9 as Maggie left Hilltop to study civilization-rebuilding with Georgie (Jayne Atkinson). The producers' hope was always for Cohan to return in some capacity, and Angela Kang told Entertainment Weekly that they're "working on it." While this probably means that if she shows up it'll be on The Walking Dead, it's not impossible that she'll be in a movie or the upcoming spin-off. In any case, we probably haven't seen the last of Maggie

A familiar face from the comics is joining the show. Kang told EW that comics character Dante will appear in Season 10, albeit in a different capacity. In the comics, he's a love interest for Maggie at Hilltop, but on the show he'll be at Alexandria. Kang described him as a "roguish, fast-talking, sometimes charming, sometimes annoying guy who can sometimes put his foot in his mouth, but is an interesting presence in the comics." The actor playing him has not been revealed.

Season 10 will pick up a few months after the storm. Season 9 ended with the communities weathering a blizzard and mourning the people they lost in the Whisperer massacre. "I feel like we mark time on the show based on the children," Kang told EW. "So we saw Rosita pretty heavily pregnant at the end of last year, and I'll say that that state has changed." Congratulations, Rosita (Christian Serratos) and Siddiq (Avi Nash) and (Step)Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam)!

That voice on the radio will be important. In the final moments of Season 9, a woman's voice was heard over the radio Eugene (Josh McDermitt) had set up saying "Hello? Hello? Calling out live on the open air. Is anybody out there?" Obviously that voice will be heard again in Season 10, and from this photo from the season premiere shared via EW, Eugene will be the one to answer the call. When this Eugene scene happened in the comics, it introduced the Commonwealth, an immensely important community with more advanced technology. Kang would neither confirm nor deny the show was introducing the Commonwealth

THE WALKING DEAD Renewed for 11th Season with LAUREN COHAN Returning
AMC has announced that The Walking Dead has been renewed for an eleventh season - and that former series co-star Lauren Cohan will be returning as a regular for that 2020-2021 season. Reported by Deadline, this news comes just one day before the tenth season debuts on October 6.

"The Walking Dead burst out of the gate 10 years ago as a genre show that had all the character depth of a top-tier prestige drama," said Sarah Barnett, President of AMC Networks Entertainment Group & AMC Studios. "And now 10 years later - led by the brilliant Angela Kang and fueled by one of the most consistently talented casts in television - this phenomenon is flourishing creatively, with critics and audiences embracing its reset. We’re delighted to welcome back Lauren Cohan, she has meant so much to this show and its passionate, global fanbase, who are in for a fantastic ride over the coming months."

Cohan was a lead actor in the AMC series from 2011 to 2018, but stepped back from the show after being unable to come to do a new deal with the network at the time.
