Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Hi All,

    As a new user I can't post links, so I'll just let you know that you can follow both the results of each of the 4 sections of the Kilkenny Chess Congress this weekend as well as the top three boards of the Masters from the links on the official ICU site.

    There are about 230 players entered so far, it should be a great weekend, see you there !

    I would have been playing in this tournament had it not been for it's disorganised organiser!. I needed someone to cover me for work for friday evening and saturday morning and my substitute wasn't sure if he could because of other commitments til this week. Tournament website states that entries will close on Wednesday 25th of November, http://www.kilkenny.icaa.ie/index.php

    which most people will take it to be end of Wednesday, anyway I said to myself I won't take any chances and asked my cover to let me know by Tuesday afternoon and he did, and I had cover, when I went online Tuesday dinner time, entries was already closed and stated on icu site as well,
    one day earlier than advertised !. I mean pairing don't get done till friday evening, why on earth close entries 3 days ahead of tournament ?, The late entry fee is there as a deterent and I was prepared to pay it.It is annoying, because the money meant for travel,entry fee and accommodation in order to have stressful games this weekend will now be spent on a boring swedish massage followed by a steak dinner in the local restaurant.

    Why have 3 live boards showing masters section, better have 2 for masters and one for the top board of section below it. Does anyone know what is the story with Irish blitz championship ?, It is advertised on Fide site to be played on 1st of December!, when is it been played ? why Not have a Rapid alongside it. Is this Enniscorthy congress going ahead or not ?, if yes where is the flyer or info ?, . Mr Bunrattyman,who in ICU was Awol in geography class ? why is Bunratty festival been advertised on ICU site as been located in Co Limerick, when it is clearly in Co Clare ?!

    Q. ICU website states that over 230 players took part in Kilkenny tournament

    Are the figures given on ICU site right or wrong ? if wrong by how many ?

    Here is another puzzle. After reading Gerry Graham's express report (linked above) and downloading the game Baburin-Hebden, can you find the amazing move that the chess engine Houdini finds? Alex (in great time trouble, I believe) missed it at both moves 64 and 66.

    He could have won instead of losing and so there would have been a tie for first.
    Of course I am not saying I would have seen it. I would probably have taken the perpetual check which would only have been good enough for a share of second prize.

    There were 227 players, so wrong by 7 players, now they have to look at previous 38 congresses to see if this was indeed a record turnout.The high turnout may be an indication of improved economical situation and optimism of chess players in the country and abroad ( many Dutch players in the tournament).

    I caught the last 15 minutes of the game and had the engine on, which showed Baburin ahead by over 4 points and suddenly he was behind by 3 points and losing. It was a tricky move and not easy to see, he was short on time and certainly tired at the end of the tournament. Here a video of a missed mate in one, by one the strongest player in the world, a 700 rated player probably wouldn't miss this mate in one !!

    To compare the Bf5!! move that Baburin missed with an overlooked mate in one is unfair to Alex.
    Black doesn't have to reply gxf5 and walk straight into mate. There is also 64 (66) Bf5!! Rb4 65 Bxg6 b1Q 66 Bxb1 Rxb1 67 Kxg6 where each player has R and two pawns but Black must lose in the long run.

    I am NOT being unfair, The video was just to show that one of strongest chess players in the world spent ages and couldn't see a simple mate in one, Baburin was down to around 30 seconds ( with around 15 seconds increment ) and it was a difficult move to find, even if Carlsen was playing, with so little time, he would have likely missed it .

    As for 227 players playing instead of the 234 reported, I was just highlighting it and not of great significance and likely caused by organiser counting entry numbers a day or two before the start of the tournament and people cancelling late on, making it a simple case of " counting your chickens before they hatch". High turn out and lack of capacity could have prompted organisers to close entries early.

    The win that Tim pointed out is really very pretty and well worth a look. Alex had the right idea of sacing the Bishop on f5 for mate threats, but played the sequence in the wrong order. He'll be kicking himself no doubt.

    The other game I saw that was well worth a look was Hebden-Jessel. Very gritty defending from Jessel who looked to me like he might be steamrolled from the opening, but found a lovely defence and the held on in a tricky ending with very little time left.

    There were 234 entrants to the Kilkenny Congress, however life intervened for seven people who unfortunately had to withdraw.

    Be advised online entries were advertised to close on Friday 20th, however this was extended to Tuesday 24th. It was still possible to enter officially until Wednesday and the last entry was taken at 1.15 am on Friday 27th.

    Be advised, Danville's post is full of BAD info !.

    Regular entry price ended on Friday 20th, after which a surcharge would apply and online entries was suppose to close on wednesday 25th but closed early due to high turnout....although could not be ruled out, I doubt someone got hold of the organiser over an hour past midnight to enter the tournament.
