Opinion: The press needs to stop sensationalising the weather https://www.thejournal.ie/readme/opi...omment-7748821 by Retail Ireland's David Fitzsimons
Quote:
An example of this occurred on a busy shopping weekend in the run-up to Christmas. On Thursday 13 December, Met Éireann reported that a status orange warning would apply nationwide from Friday evening through to Saturday evening.

On that Thursday, footfall reduced nationwide on a like by like basis by 8%, even though the alert had not yet come into effect.

A national tabloid then ran a headline the next day stating that 135 kmph winds would hit Ireland, even though those winds were actually forecast for an oil rig off the coast of Ireland, so that was out at sea!

Friday’s footfall reduced by 12% and Saturday by 23%. It is a fact that many parts of the country on Saturday 14th December experienced some rain and some wind, that said was a nationwide alert really appropriate?
which national tabloid then ran a headline the next day stating that 135 kmph winds would hit Ireland? oh does he mean the Sun whose headline was WEATHER ALERT Met Eireann confirm Storm Deirdre set to hit Ireland with ‘disruptive and damaging 130kph gusts’ as forecasters issue nationwide wind warning https://www.thesun.ie/news/3518326/m...-wind-warning/

As usual, the journal comments section is vomit inducing. People with no knowledge (and possibly the same ones who would criticise Met Éireann for "incorrect" warnings) spouting nonsense.

The reality is he is correct. The press will jump on anything for a story and unfortunately while the more educated among us know to ignore everything a red-top tabloid says, many don't and take it as gospel. In addition, some of the outlets that would once have been considered reliable like Indo and the Examiner jumped on the bandwagon.

I do think Met Éireann need to be clearer about explaining why warnings have changed and reinforcing that warnings are based on forecast which is not an exact science. Beyond the regular TV and web foreacsts, communication is not their forté.

I notice all the radio stations and their dj's getting excited about stunning 22c weather this weekend and how we'll be warmer than places in the Mediterranean. I expect plenty of people giving out on Tuesday about how Met Eireann never get the weather right.

And just to be clear, I'm not knocking ME, just people mis reading the weather or hearing what they want and not realising that warm weather doesn't mean sunny weather.
