    Going by these photo's they are a very impressive looking machine.
    They are so big that in the thin air at an altitude of 8,500 feet a Mil 26 can only pickup one of them at a time.

    * can a loaded V22 Osprey even hover at 8,500 feet ?

    They are doing a practice run....dublin-moneygall-dublin, and checking out their route on the way. There are 4 chinooks and 2 black hawks over. They will be flying along side 'Marine 1' with obama on monday

    Giving away the route wouldn't be very smart.

    Only if they go along the same route repeatedly.
    They did the same with Clinton in '95. Chinooks spent about 3 days flying all along the border checking the entire area. No indication of whether or not they would use any particular route at the time, vast majority of the overflown area was not used.

    I would guess they are pretty experienced at this sort of thing,so I'm sure they know what they are doing. Maybe visually looking over the surrounding area to spot places to avoid or indeed physical features to be noted in the case of evasion..........

    My point exactly. Giving away THE route wouldn't be very smart, as I said.

    Well as the only non military person flying today, I heard an American accented pilot call Shannon, 'airborne from Moneygall' only to be told he had to call Military Radar. I worked out that something was up. Must have been one of the Chinooks. The US meeting the Queen.

    Why is the UH 60 been used as marine one and not the sea king. bit strange that they use different types of airframes. its always the sea king you see on the south lawn at the White House

    Because the VH-60N folds easily for loading into an Air Force C-5 Galaxy or a C-17 Globemaster it is ideal for overseas assignments. The Marines can prepare a VH-60N for a C-5 load in less than two hours.

    They're named "White Hawks", by the way.

    I got more rides in those things than I care to recall last year. (Chinooks/Black Hawks). Only thing I'll say for them is it sure beats walking.

    What kind of scale will the no fly zone be while good old Mr Change is here?

    There was another transport plane in the airport today, you'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge i don't know what type. The same type that was here the other week and apparently several times between. Couldn't get a decent picture from within the terminal, if i knew they were there i would of taken my lunch watching them. There's a perfect spot to view them n'all.

    Maybe the VH-3D's are going to be used to pick him up from AF1 the other side of the Irish sea when he starts his state visit to the UK after leaving here.

    they really pulled out all the stops for obama this time. i remember when bush came over for that summit in drumoland i was with the RDF and all eastern brigade mowags were sent down there to encircle the place. My company minded the house while the big boys were away:D but there wasn't half as much flights or aircraft over and that was a three day visit. i thin they flew in three c5's with choppers and limos and that was it. they landed in shannon that time too.

    So far we have had 2-3 C-17's, 3 C-5's, 4 Chinooks, 2 WhiteHawks, and AF 1 yet to arrive! Then I assume we will have a similar set of arrivals to recover all the equipment the C-5/C-17's pre-positioned?

    Anybody know if the C-32 (Air Force Two) was in town? Saw something parked next to Air Force One this morning in similar livery.
