Visit the Grafton Quarter. Where Burger King is only a stones throw away from Mc Donalds.

I really don't get the fuss around this.

Grafton Quarter has been on DCC tourist maps for a few years now, it's not exactly a new thing.

It promotes the area, what's the harm? It's not like they are renaming Grafton Street.

Can't understand all the outrage myself either. These terms have been used on tourism literature and so on for ages now.

These lights are also funded by businesses in the vicinity of Grafton Street, not just those on the street itself. It's not that surprising that they have been pushing for 'Grafton Quarter'.

Dublin Town businesses, who are funding the lights, are divided into the Creative District, Dame District, Grafton Quarter, Talbot District and Dublin One.

Dublin City Council and its councillors (some who notably have been jumping on the social media bandwagon by criticizing this) are delighted to be saving hundreds of thousands of Euro by making businesses pay for the lighting.

Many things can get on one's goat, simultaneously. Hard to grasp I know but some people are multifaceted.

This has notions written all over it...

...every five buildings in a given city is labelled as a "quarter" these days. Galway has a "Latin Quarter"

Fact is - Grafton St is pretty much a shadow of its former self. Practically no high end independent retailers now, all chain stores, mobile phone shops and fast food outlets.

Some PR marketing Dickheads got their heads around a table and this is what they delivered.

I think there was a "Team" of part time or wannabe influencers employed on the rebrand. It stinks of that level of vacuous stupidity

Sorry, but I shall be beholden to no one in my unfair sniggering at 'Talbot District'.

Don't see the problem. Destination Marketing has been very very successful in the country. I remember being guffawed and sneered by locals at when the Wild Atlantic Way was first mooted.

Look at it now. They're tagging it in their social media and are very very boastful about their WAW.

Other cities and countries can forge ahead with this sort of marketing with confidence and aplomb, but there's a real fear and lack of faith among some Irish people. Anything "cool", or mainstream European is mocked at as having "notions" or being "American"!! Same happened when Dublin's Chinatown was mooted, hecklers and snipers sniggering behind their keyboards.

It's a good way of sectioning up the city from a tourist (non commuter, not local) perspective.

Christmas lights that are paid for by the businesses in that area to encourage people to come in to the city to shop.

Christmas lights have always been about marketing really. Make everyone happy and jovial. Build a bit of Christmas cheer blah blah blah. Oh and while you are hear spend a load of money.

If the council or Bord Failte want to spend public money on them and make them culturally significant or highlight the buzz word of the day by showing diversity, understanding, building a multi something environment etc they can. People will then moan about the waste of tax payers money.

I like the lights and just ignore the bits I don't. Much like how I ignore bits of the city I don't like and concentrate on what I do

Is the Nollaig Shona Duit sign def gone? Please say no :(

I take the little ones into dublin every Christmas and that’s one of the “highlights” we look out for

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,281 ✭✭✭✭Beechwoodspark

Sorry now but Nollaig Shona Duit was a simple, festive, welcoming and uniquely Irish Christmas message.

I can’t believe they’ve gone and got rid of something that was a unique selling point for dublin and Ireland in general.

"Quarter" and "Hub", two of the most hackneyed words in urban areas these days.
If a tourist or shopper can't find Grafton St without it being "Quartered", fvck them.

Xmas stinks of commercialism enough without a clichéd morketing exercise in neon lights.

Bizarre thing for people to be moaning about.

The names are used to promote tourism and give distinct characters to different parts of Dublin City.

They're not forcing you to use the names.

    I did like that sign.

I've no really issue with the quarter thing but why did it have to result in the other sign being jettisoned?

What Dublin desperately needs is more bloody tourists.

I noticed that when I got off the Luas at Connolly and walked down towards Parnell and third to use a restroom

It's not just Grafton Street, that's kinda the point.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Apart from comedic talent, you could also do with a map.

The Grafton quarter sign is grand. It's just a little sad to see the nollaig shona dhuit sign gone. It's been there as long as I remember.
