Some very interesting and encouraging news regarding new treatments for phobia sufferers coming from Germany.

Scientists in Würzburg University Hospital are having positive results using virtual reality and transcranial magnetic exposure to treat acrophobia (fear of heights).

The use of virtual reality to tackle anxiety is not new however, in this case, the benefits from being virtually exposed to an anxiety/fear trigger (heights), were accelerated by magnetically stimulating a specific area of the frontal lobe that these researchers had previously identified as playing a role in unlearning anxiety.

The next step is to determine if this type of treatment can be used to treat other forms of anxiety - Arachnophobes are next in line for study.
