Nine Catalan leaders sentenced for sedition

    Nine leaders of the Catalan independence movement have been sentenced for between nine and thirteen years for "Sedition".

    Spain's Supreme Court has sentenced nine Catalan separatist leaders to between nine and 13 years in prison for sedition over their role in an independence referendum in 2017.

    Three other defendants were found guilty of disobedience and fined, but will not serve prison sentences.

    The 12 politicians and activists had all denied the charges.

    This wasn't terror related. It wasn't plot to kill the King and overthrow parliament, it was simply an independence vote on whether or not a region should have the right to self determination.

    Spain seem to have completely gone over the top on this thing and handled it extremely badly. Surely this is a gift to the Catalan independence movement and will only drum up more support?

    Spain has a massive hangover from the Franco era with its constitution and legal system being specifically designed to prevent any real self-determination for the Basques and Catalans. The Spanish state has frequently banned newspapers, elected political parties, language groups, youth organisations etc in the Basque Country under the guise of them being connected to the ever present bogeyman of ETA.

    In Catalonia now they're attempting to give people savagely long prison sentences for organising a democratic exercise. It's a disgrace.

    In September, a march in Barcelona in support of Catalonia's independence from Spain drew crowds of about 600,000 people - one of the lowest turnouts in the eight-year history of the annual rally.

    I imagine this will fix the last marches low turnout.

    I guess the judges had no choice as the catalans broke alaw, however archaic. However it makes the Spanish look very authoriatirianism. I hope they get pardoned quietly after a short period
