1851 Census - Antrim

    Does anyone know what the story is with the 1851 census for Antrim? There are many different spellings for some baronies, e.g. what has to be every possible way you could spell Upper Massereene. Anyone know why this is? Is there an easier way to browse through these records than the National Archives website?

    People type it in wrong or the way they think it should be i guess.
    I have seen wrong house numbers given for example when searching.

    There are only fragments of the 1851 census surviving.
    Familysearch also allows you to search but leads you back to the NAI. You'll need to register for free to do this.

    Spelling was very unfixed in 1851. Consult the 1851 Townland index for the official spelling then.

    Note: house numbers should be mostly disregarded unless in a city. Census enumerators assigned numbers using their own system to ensure they counted every house. This system varied from census to census. On the later ones, 1901/1911, when you view the building returns, you can work out if it's the same house from the windows/rooms section.

    Would there be a map anywhere that shows the fragments of the Antrim census that survive? (wishful thinking)

    Not that I'm aware of.

    Just hit search on a empty box on the NAI site for 1851 and it'll bring up all the returns at once. You can sort by parish/townland or any other heading.

    You could use that in conjunction with an original OSI map open in a second tab.
