Hoof Paring

    Do you do your own hoof pairing?

    if yes> What tools do you use and any one using the whoppa type crush or just a normal crush and rope on one of the ratchets? Did you do a course?

    if no> who does it? (vet or otherwise) How much is it costing?

    costs us €15 +vat for pairing and €10 +vat for shoeing

    i got the frs to do mine last year. i think around 15 euros a cow.
    the guy had a manual crush but said he was updating to an electric one.
    the tools are basic enough a long pincers,a hoof paring knife and a 4 1/2" grinder with a hoof trimming blade and a few more bits.
    theres a guy in donegal whos doing courses with a dutch hoof paring specialist and i thinks its about 1500 euros for a week long course.
    it looks simple but there is a technique in doing it properly especially in dealing with abcess in the hoof and getting the angles right and fitting shoes etc.

    on some old cows and ones that need attention more regularly i do them my self
    I have a hoist which clamps onto the crush or the retaining gate in the calving pens, I just use a couple of knives & a manual shears, I never done a course but learned a lot from a vet years ago, knowing my cows I often take action before any lameness occurs


    I hire guy once every so often to give all the cows a once over (or if the bull needs a trim ). He has a hydraulic crush which lifts the animal off the ground,

    he charges €40 for the first animal and €5 each after that including vat.

    There is a fellow by the name of John Black (087-0531877) based in Co. Roscommon who covers most of the country and has a very good safe set up for pairing cows feet. He is very reasonable and the more cows you have the beter value he is. Its better to get the job done right - safely.
