I wonder is it time something like this happens here.
Personally the fuel tax here bothers me the most.
It seems the young working class have no hope of getting on the property ladder.
The latest brainwave by Shane Ross seems to have pissed off alot of people.
These measures would be all well and good if we had a top class road network around the country if our motor tax wasn't outrageous.
Some people could drive five or six different vehicles everyday I can imagine how many licences will be lost or misplaced.
The hospital and bed situation is absolutely dire.

How hard is it really to carry your licence in your pocket or bag? The things people get upset about is astounding to me sometimes.

Motor tax has nothing to do with the quality of the roads.

    Why should anyone have to?
We must be one of the only first works country's that they can't get all your information up inside the police or garda car

Apparently its starting in England on Saturday, be interesting to see what kind of numbers turn up, and if it gets violent like the French protests.

Its a tax people are paying that they see zero benefit from.
Less wealthy people driving older cars are paying higher tax and insurance

So your idea is to have no licence at all, but have your name on a database that the gards can check in their cars?

If you drive five or six different vehicles every day, then how can a Garda be expected to get all your information up in the car unless you're carrying ID?

In every country that has in car computers its an offence not to carry your licence and unlike here they actually enforce all their traffic legislation so you will be fined if you don't have a licence on you.

What do you mean by zero benefit?

How much tax did they so called less wealthy people pay on their initial purchase? Who bought the car originally so that it was able to be sold on as an older more affordable car?

I don't get any of your points, what do you want to change with your protest?

More like we must be the only first world nation to get upset about the notion of having to carry a driving licence while driving.

How do you prove you are Joe Bloggs?

"Do you have a ticket to this concert Sir?"
    "Yes"
    "Can I see it"
"No, my name is Joe Bloggs"
"Oh yes, someone called Joe Bloggs bought a ticket, in you go."

Yeah i agree. I could drive any work vehicle during the day and my own or my brothers, fathers etc etc. Having a physical licence is needed.

Just picked out examples of what I see on social media of what is annoying people.
I only started the thread to see what people's thoughts were on different matters and if people wanted to

1 Take some action in the form of strikes.

    2. Are perfectly happy the way things are.

    3. Moan to other people that the reasons there not happy aren't legitimate reasons no to be happy

Not hard at all, but it is also not hard to forget it.
Nipping out to get some milk, or get a call to pick someone up from the station cause its raining, easy enough to forget it.

The punishment doesn't match the crime.

    That's nice in theory.

In practice, Garda car scans your plate. Car is registered to "ALM Construction Limited".

Right. They pull you over. Who are you?

    "Joe Bloggs."

    Address?

    "Rathballylog, Co. Wexford."

    Eircode?

    "Sure, what's that? I haven't a clue"

There are 40 Joe Bloggs listed in Rathballylog.

"I might be under John Bloggs."

    There are 40 of them.

    "Try JJ Bloggs"

There are 40 of them, too.

"Try Peter Bloggs, that's my grandfather's name"

    ....And so on.

A digital form of your licence comes on there computer screen.
I mean if your going to go down that route whats to stop people getting a false licence made up with say a truck licence when there stopped they show it to the guard everything looks OK so off you go.
With a computer based system that can't happen.
Granted its far harder to do with the card version of the license.

Id be all for it once we leave out the cringey chants that we had during the water protests. They were really embarrasing.

There are times when I will accidentally leave the house without my wallet. It might be in another jacket or pair of trousers. The proposed punishment for it is ridiculous and completely over the top.

    "That's me brother"

Seriously, it's easier for you to carry the licence than it is to stand at the side of the road arguing with a Garda about whether you actually have one.

Pull the car up to the red cow roundabout.
Get out lock it walk away.
Several hundred cars in various locations around the city.
    Job done

No doubt its easier ive often forgotten my licence been stopped and told bring to the closest station within 7 days I think.
Done that and the jobs done.
Its a bit severe to get penalty points because I left my licence on the last car I was in.
