Another awful story coming out of Syria. Chemical weapon used on civilians. Pictures of dead women and children. Seems to be a massive online war to control the narrative too. Doesn't seem to be any end to this proxy war between the US and Russia and only the innocent seem to be suffering.

The rebels should have taken the evacuation buses like the other two pockets in Ghouta. Not too sure as to how the US etc. will respond.

Nothing will happen ,we will get calls for s full UN investigation which will be blocked by russia who will repeatedly say there is no chemical weapons in Syria and it's all fake news to make russia look bad ,
meanwhile posters will come in to remind us that America did this and America did that .

Russia needs to stop supporting the butchers of Syria, House Assad. But I suppose it doesnt suit the current Russian policy of destabilising regions.

    Fcuk Putin. Glory to Ukraine!

Every time Assad seems to be winning he starts using chemical weapons. It’s pretty stupid really.

The Russian should stop destabilising the region by supporting the Assad government. It’s only when the US supported rebels like Isis and Al Nusra take over and kill everybody in Damascus will the region be stabilised.

The Syrian conflict is not very straight forward and claims of chemical attacks should be treated with hessitation as they could spark a regional conflict.

Since the recent forced evacuation of various rebel groups from Eastern Ghouta, media outlets have been reporting discoveries of chemical weapon manufacturing bunkers underground, primarily in the last current bastion of rebel held Ghouta.

The refusal of the group to relocate may add an element of truth to the unconfirmed discoveries. It is further solidified when you take into account that the same rebel group previously used chemical agents against syrian population in Aleppo.

The recent targeted strikes by syrian and russian aircraft *may* have hit whatever stockpile was co-located with the rebel groups.

Tactically and strategically, it is unlikely that the Syrian forces used chemical weapons against the rebels and civilians in Ghouta. Especially at this late stage of the conflict while relocation deals are being handed out.

It is more likely that remaining rebels used the chemical agent as a last attempt to regain control and halt syrian advances by bringing the international community into the mix.

Thats IF there is any truth to it.

It's hard to know the real truth these days. It's like 1984.

Two different newspapers will report the facts in different ways, based on the wishes of their owners.

Can anyone give a coherent reason why Assad always seems to use chemical weapons when the area is just about to fall to his control.

Seriously what would he possibly have to gain from using chemical weapons when the war is all but won??

As opposed to what - leave the country to it's own devices and end up with Libya 2.0 or worse?

An Assad victory is the quickest way to stability and peace if we are being entirely realistic.

Not a fan of Russia in general but anyone who thinks a Russian withdrawal is the answer to Syria's problems is deluded.

At the very, very least people should be questioning the narrative of what's happening and being reported in Syria.

It is not a simple case of the 'good guys' fighting the big bad butcher (and never was but that's how it's being pushed in some media).

    1) Its already far, far worse than Libya.

    2) Assad is a mass murdering butcher and will be unable to secure the country without mass executions and torture if victorious.

Assad is a tyrant who wants to cling onto power at all costs, if this means bombing the population and turning the country into something that looks like Dresden in 1945, so be it. The Russians are only to happy to go along with that, because they also have zero concerns for the population as long as they get the desired outcome.
If I had the choice of being oppressed by US backed forces or Russian backed forces, I'd go for the US 10 times out of 10.
Say what you want about them, but genocide, starvation and mass human rights abuses are not really their thing.
You can be sure that these will be the hallmarks of Russian and Chinese meddling in Africa and the Middle East going forward.

That doesn't even answer the question.

If you want Russia to pull out and Assad to fall, what's your alternative for the future of Syria?

This mess wouldn't have spiraled out on control to the extent it did in the first place if the US had not intervened (it's quite similar to Russia backing separatists in Eastern Ukraine).

This is not me saying I support Assad by the way - it's about having a realistic conversation about the future of Syria.

Look at what happened in Iraq. The US's democracy project almost ended in total and utter failure despite the money spent and paper strength of the establishment -at the first watery, weak challenge to the central government.

An easy way for Assad /A.N Other to test chemical weapons safe in the knowledge nothing will be done about it.

Assad is undoubtedly a bad individual and the Russians are ruthlessly acting in Syria solely to protect their own interests; I don't think anyone can argue otherwise or that the whole situation there is a horrible bloody mess.

At the same time I haven't heard of any credible suggestion as to what could or should be done.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,403 ✭✭✭✭vicwatson

Rte lyric fm used the word “suggested” (chemical weapons were used)

I fully support Assad and Russia in Syria. They are the only stable forces in the area. The US wants to destabilise the region and supported rebels to that effect (Al Qaeda, FSA, etc.). However, that hasn't panned out too well and they are backing Kurds. While I am all for backing the Kurds, America wants to still have the support of Turkey, and when the chips are down, the Kurds pay the price.

The Damascus rebels are on their knees. Using conventional warfare Assad has eliminated almost all of their territory. Maybe he has sought to level the playing field by using chemical weapons at the 11th hour in order to give the rebels international support.

Assad does not seem like a nice person. He is by all accounts a brutal dictator. But we should also be realistic instead of wanting to rebuild the middle east in our image. Assad's weakness created ISIL. Think about that.

Trump just said Russia and Iran will be a "big price to play" for backing the use of chemical weapons by assad..

Donald Trump has warned Russia and Iran there will be a "big price to pay" for backing the Syrian regime after a suspected chemical attack.

The US President condemned as "mindless" and "SICK" reports of at least 70 people being killed, and a further 500 injured, in an alleged chlorine gas attack in the city of Douma in eastern Ghouta.

Mr Trump tweeted: "Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria. Area of atrocity is in lockdown and encircled by Syrian Army, making it completely inaccessible to outside world. President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad. Big price...

"....to pay. Open area immediately for medical help and verification. Another humanitarian disaster for no reason whatsoever. SICK!"
