My Dad taught one of the owners and always encouraged us to give local firms business. I has actually ordered a PC from them just before they ceased trading. They completely refunded me while apologising for not being able to fill my order.
It's not every company would have done that.

    Darn,

I was trying to access the website a few times and was wondering why it wouldn't load.

When I first moved to Ireland my ISDN PC-card died and the only place that had specialised stuff like that and where you actually could walk into the place and pick it up in person was Marx Computers.

The same goes for routers from AVM and the likes. Only Marx Computers had them here. I've bought some only a couple months ago.

Sad to see the shop go. It certainly was one of the very few specialized computer stores left.

    /M

They're not great, but Maplin's on Jervis St.
There used to be a place on Parliament St a few years ago, don't know if it's still there though. ACtually, looks like they are.
There's a place called Beyond 2000 beside Mao on Chatham Row. Only thing I ever bought there was software about 12 years ago, so not sure what they sell.
    Peats, maybe.
Or if you're really stuck, PC World.
Beyond 2000 is gone. It closed down some time earlier this year.

Agree totally with all the messages in support of Marx Computers and in particular the comments about Stephen and Rosemary. I had dealings with both of them over the years and always found them to be very helpful. My current system came from Marx, as did my previous one. Nothing was ever too much trouble to them and the value was always good.
Best wishes to Stephen and please send my best wishes to Rosemary. I hope she will find alternative employment elsewhere soon.

On the other issue of an alternative to Marx, I used to get some stuff from Laser Computers in Dundrum when I was working in that area for a while and found them to be good also. Nikki was the person I dealt with at the time.

They still have a website at http://laser-computers.com/, but I am not sure if they are still up and running. As already said in other posts, companies such as these are finding the online sources difficult to compete with. I wonder has anyone else dealt with Laser recently.

    Aghhhh!!!!

They just sent an email out - CC'ing their entire database of customers to say goodbye....

yes - cc'ing, not bcc'ing - so everyone gets everyone else's email address.

How unprofessional (and probably in breach of data protection) is that

I wonder who did that? It certainly wasn't myself or Rosemary as we've moved on. Though I see the domain has been taken by another company now.

Got a mail from them yesterday informing me that they are now "Computer Doctors IE" specializing in mostly repairs and giving me the option to unsubscribe from any further emails.

Even though the email was from Marx, I assume it's some other crowd moved into their old premises?

They acquired the phone number and website, probably the name too. They have no connection with Marx otherwise. They used to be up in Coolock but moved into Fairview a few months before Marx closed.

So how did they get all the email address's - and what made them think a pc builder would want with a place like this- did marx leave behind his old acounts also- wonder if they got our credit details and delivery addresss also- :(

Some of those emails are soo ancient- does compuserve still exist?

I've no idea, I don't work there anymore. It's possible that they also got the customer database (no credit card info was retained in it btw), but I could see data protection issues right there.

I'm also sad to see them gone. Dealt with them for years, after I stopped dealing with Peats (for years)

How can anyone compete with the amazon's of this world. I do not know.

My elderly uncle used to deal locally with Marx. He needs a service and possible virus removal. He is wondering if anyone has contact details for Stephen as he found him very helpful. Thanks.
