Criminal background check?

    Could somebody please tell me what sort of things are likely to be included in a criminal background check?

    I'm asking because I want to get a criminal background check done in South Korea and don't want to be refused a visa because of a pending investigation. Please can somebody advise me about what information is likely to be included to CBC?

    Are you coming from Korea to Ireland? Generally the Garda will only be interested in serious matters, especially convictions. They aren't really interested in a parking ticket. This says "whether you have any criminal convictions and if so, give details of what you were convicted for, where and when, and the sentence you received" http://www.inis.gov.ie/en/INIS/Information%20on%20Completing%20Visa%20Application%20Form.pdf/Files/Information%20on%20Completing%20Visa%20Application%20Form.pdf

    If going from Ireland to Korea, the Garda won't issue a full background check and will only provide a limited check (possibly convictions only) for the purpose of the visa. This used to be detailed on www.garda.ie, but they have removed it, so I can't confirm what it said.

    Thanks to everyone that has replied to my question, but I'm still a little unsure as to what information will be included in the check on the http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/justice/law_enforcement/police_certificate_of_character website I found the following about getting a certificate of character.
    "A "Certificate of Character" is a statement about you issued by the Gardai. The certificate, which is normally valid for one year, states your name, address, date of birth and also includes information about whether or not you have a criminal record or have ever come to the attention of the Gardai in Ireland. Police Certificates of Character are often required before you can apply for a visa to visit or travel to other countries.

    I've just been told two contradictory pieces of information when I rang two different garda superintendent offices:

    (a)A police certificate will not show up any pending convictions
    (b) A police certificate will show up pending convictions and they might not issue a police cert until after the court hearing.

    Anyone know one which is correct? And what ever happened to presumption of innocents?

    I'm really depressed right now and don't know what to do I'm so:mad:confused:

    i had to get a criminal background check for a course in england from the guards, oh my god, they haven't a clue, i rang templemore, i rang my local station, eventually rang my cousin who is a guard. Went to another police station, I was told there that they only issue individual clearances for people who are going to adopt a baby or are going to australia, something like that didn't make any senses. They told me the institute i was going to would have to apply for the clearance on my behalf, i was pretty stressed about it.
    Anyway wrote to the place in tipp, including a copy of my birthcert, passport and a letter stating what i wanted it for, and i got back a letter stating that nothing showed up. this was good enough for the uni. I also had to get one from South Korea after working there for 2 years, that was a piece of cake compared to the saga i had to endure in ireland.

    I would say apply for it now, so that it comes back clean. And if you go to korea, have fun, its brilliant!!!

    Thanks Whatsgoingon, but I'm curious to know did the letter you got back from the place in tipp state that it was not an actual criminal background check or was the letter you got simply state that you had no convictions? Also was it recently that you applied for the letter? i.e. in the past year or two.

    it was the one saying it was not a criminal records check thing, but also stated nothing came up in the search. i paid 6euro for it too, got it last summer, have you checked with the embassy in dublin if this letter will suffice, depending on immigration in korea, you may also need drugs test and a full medical.

    Well I would but every time I've phoned kimmi in the past when I was looking for an answer to a question I seemed to end up getting a different reply every time so I don't really know what to do and I'm stuck in limbo at the moment thanks to Koreas sudden rule change.
