Nice, congrats. Big lump of an intercooler, any more mods planned? Are the s14 called Silvia or 200sx over there?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

I've heard a few people refer to them as an S14 over here so I'd off thought it would be a Sylvia but don't the Sylvias have that S badge instead of the Nissan badge? That would lead me to guess it's a 200sx.

Could be totally wrong though :D

    Mod Merit badge earned.

I picked up an auto s14 with boost turned up. Needs some TLC as it was a trade in i took off a garage but considering its what id call uk spec without the rust.

    issues:
    • Exhaust is a stupid cannon (booked in for a custom twin exit backbox 1st next month 3" turbo back already)
    • Rear Bushings have a knock in what sounds like one of the rear left suspension arms.
    • VVT Sprocket sounds like a tractor.
    • Auto box is bad (scares me as i cant predict the kickdown and had wheelspin lane changing).

So the plan is to poly bush an s15 subframe and fit it first.

Get the vvt sprocket from the states change it.

In the new year if the petrol bill isn't two severe manual convert it on a z32 gearbox and start road mapping for duel fuel (e85). Ill be doing as much of that as i can myself.

If it is ill be hunting for small bike as a daily.

This is my second S14 and its the car i miss the most out of everything i have ever driven.

You are heading in the right direction, I hat those cannon exhausts a good stainless steel is the one to go for, The Auto box in the S14 is renowned as being really bad so I would say the manual conversion is the right direction. Looking forward to updates on this:) also looks like one of your electric mirrors has a broken motor.

I have a few things to sort before fiddling with boxes.

Steering rack bushes are epicly shagged. So they are on order and some tools.

After a service and change of plugs I'll start trimming the fuel maps.

So glad I never sold my wideband.

Ogh mirrors are manual on the UK/euro/Ozzy s14

Over the weekend i fixed a broken exhaust hanger and attempted to re-solder the Tachometer.

Exhaust is so much quieter and not hitting the body now. Still getting swapped out Friday though.

At least i wont be driving and shouting at the car to shut up like an escaped mental patient.....

    Tachometer is 416 USD.

    Breakers yard here i come...

3" Turbo back and doesn't upset the neighbours, me or set off car alarms in the car park at work.
    Looks almost stock two.

    All win.

Cannon gets sold on ebay(sorry adverts.ie im in oz).

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,691 ✭✭✭JimmyCrackCorn

So i crashed it then. Week 3.

Being a muppet i knocked the engine off on a hill while stuck in traffic.
    Emptied the break pressure .

Started the car, rolled into a car in front of me pushed by the autobox and slope before brake servo refilled.

Pulled the handbrake but not early enough.

I'm a lucky guy there wasn't a motorbike or bicycle in front of me.

Breakers yard again this weekend. Replacement quarter panel and bill for poor ladies bumper.

    I feel very foolish.

    Update:

    Car got a service.

    -New fuel filter
    -Engine flush
    -Fresh oil
    -Carbon canister removal
    -Simplified boost plumbing
    -Colder plugs
    -Lambda sensor replaced

    -Boost turned up 10psi

    Todo:
-Wait for new disks to turn up
    -Fit disks
    -Get car to panel beater

    Fly home for Christmas....

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,691 ✭✭✭JimmyCrackCorn

    Overdue update

    Not good.

    Spent a few hundred quid.
    1. Brake disks
    2. Lambda sensor
    3. Tidied up boost plumbing
    4. Removed carbon canister
    5. Suspension alignment done but have 3 degree's rear camber which explains why I have no grip in the rain.
    6. Flat tyre
    7. New pads
    8. General service bits, colder plugs...

Photo from driveway after bumper fixed for rego (NCT and Road tax )

    Piggyback ECU

All wires tagged and matched to ecu pinout. Map Cleared

    u88jXVO80YyMVZpidINCO41vYrSjGoH71_mw4bc_Q4I=w1308-h865-no

Software up and got it connected to the ecu on the desk so I have a cheap as chips piggyback ecu and boost controller. For less than a Greddy Boost controller.

Everything I need to punch the turn the boost up to 15psi.

    Capture.JPG

Exhaust was bouncing around on the rubber mounts so...

    xKNilrX5b3eRmW_e_vy_Sxq6EXrxCFW53BhAbVHDRSQ=w1498-h865-no

Coilover spanners as i was told by the alignment place the height was too low for no camber correction and the coilovers have been installed with too much pre-load.

    mzx1GRFkWSglTHehw-uE_wA.jpg

So i got a camber gauge to set the ride hight where I could set it all up for grip. And have some more ground clearance.

    GA45-500x500.jpg

    Other Bits:
The rev clock broke a common problem and my attempt at re-soldering finished it. New old clocks arrived.

Dikota digital speedo corrector aswell. For future gearbox conversion.

    The bad news:

Nothing has been done since Rego all the nice bits above are sitting in boxes.

I'm cursed any time i spend over 1000 Euro on a motor it gets stolen, borrowed and crashed or struck by lightning....

Just as the car is getting close to being right. A lady at work reverses hard into the nose of my car and she has been off the road for the last 3 weeks.

I get it back on the 21st of March.

    IMG_20140211_180059.jpg

Well i guess I wont need to machine polish the lights any-more or re-spray the bumper...

On the upside all the damage is cosmetic no structural panels bent.

    Car due back this week.

    $T2eC16JHJHcFFjw98gdUBSJm(8(sNQ~~_35.JPG?set_id=89040003C1

    Solenoid for boost control ordered.

Closed loop boost control parts covered. Should make a ridiculous difference in midrange power.

That's about as good as a stage 1 tune can get and about as far as ill take the car for a while. (Famous last words...)

Having spent the afternoon upside-down with a torch in my mouth in the passenger footwell of my skyline replacing the leaking heater matrix with a shiny new one, I feel your pain at having the front rammed in. I always loved the look of those Silvias. Great cars. Dodgy speedo seems to be a Nissan mandatory feature though.

    Update:

I wont get the car back for another month as the Bonnet is still in the post.

I'm trying to source one locally before then but not having much luck.

    Two months no car....

I'm surprised you couldn't find a bonnet close by, the wreckers yards here in Melbourne had a fair few 200SX & Syklines that have been drifted into poles in them when I was looking for some parts for a mate the other month

The closest one i found was Newcastle with a hail mark that looked like it was hit by a hammer. Series 2 s14 parts are easy series 1 seem to be rare in Sydney.

Then he wanted 100$ for it.

I'm sorting visa stuff at the moment so I can wait and leave it to the panel beaters.

Ill start collecting bits for a manual conversion and I need to get some wheel studs changed.

I also have to sort other things, apparently my car is not legal with:
    1. Pod aifilter.
    2. Pillar boost gauge

    Some unusual laws here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,230 ✭✭✭Daved_XB

Talk to me about it.... I have a meeting tomorrow morning with an Engineer to go over the Challeneger to see what silly laws it's breaking & what I have to fix or remove before its allowed on the road

Have the hump Insurance keeps ringing me giving me different dates on when my car is ready.

So while i have the hump i ordered a pump....

400LPH Walbero because 255Lph is not enough.

More than enough to run E85.

Got the car back. Fight time

Stripped rear coil-overs and set pre load. Wd40 polish and back in.

    IMG_20140503_163331.jpg

Rear raised 35mm. Until I the geometry back to 1.5 degrees negative camber.

    New Tachometer in white.....

    New problem:

Car drives like a fiesta when i picked it up. Bogging and bad idle. Drank a quarter tank on the way to work this morning.

New second-hand maf bought and fitted, While on lunch.

    Plus:
    • New Thermostat.
    • All the inter-cooler pipe-work stripped and refitted boost leak free.
    • Idle air control valve cleaned and re-fitted.

I was gutted when I got the car back and it was running like a dog. So happy when I finally got it running properly.

Not a car to own if your not stubborn and afraid of a set of tools.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,691 ✭✭✭JimmyCrackCorn

Idle Air control valve re-set post MAF messing.

While troubleshooting the rough running. I had fiddled with and cleaned the idle air control valve causing the adjustment to be way out.

Stripped it at lunch reset it to the location it was before i went messing with it. (back to factory adjustment)

Looks and sounds much smoother will test drive it after work.

Getting to be a long list of things iv fixed/fiddled with in car-parks.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,691 ✭✭✭JimmyCrackCorn

    Boost leak fixed finally.

New Silicone hoses and intercooler later it actually boosts properly.

    1.30 am on a weeknight

    IMG_20140519_234235.jpg

Compression tested the motor and its a little tired but within tolerance. Debating weather to drop a a fresher motor in or go Rb25 or refresh....

Have some time to think about what i want to do from here. But I don't want to put 15psi through a motor that is right on the bottom end of tolerances.

  • Registered Users Posts: 889 ✭✭✭hi_im_fil

What compression did it make? 15psi is nothing :D Boost away :D:D

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,691 ✭✭✭JimmyCrackCorn

Compression is low in 135psi mark I think. Not sure I remember.

    • Replaced the lambda sensor plug on the loom as it was brittle and cracked.
    • Coolant hose leaked so I have ordered a collection of silicone water hoses.
    • Fixed rev clock again with correct cluster this time

Will do an oil change over the weekend.

I have an intermittent abs light to sort out two....

Small update. I have been quiet for a while.

Tidy up and prep work for ozzy NCT.

    Nissan
    Centre caps
    IMG_20141105_160409.jpg

Fresh pads and Fluid all round - Bad photo but its pads..
Mintex Pads, Pads I took off were fine but just glazed and felt poor. Now I have a very solid peddle again.

    IMG_20141206_172017.jpg

Spotted a split steering rack boot. That is on order so should arrive for next weekend along with poly rack bushes.

    Compression

    IMG_20140521_160919.jpg

    IMG_20140521_160556.jpg

    IMG_20140521_160725.jpg

So compression is good as per the manual but its on the bottom end of the tolerance scale and I want a reliable car and more power so I have to do something.

    Problem:

    1. Auto box
    2. Engine tired
    3. Turbo oil seals not looking like they like no-reserc
    4. I daily drive the car.
    5. My NCT/MOT/REGO is in January

So I banged it around, selling it on. Swapping in an s15 motor and box etc and came to the conclusion I need a cost effective solution as I don't want to get into the classic money pit situation.

    RB25 swap mounts:

    b7ZT4_GTdkAQzOV2I0LuMP4k17qUlSPKgtfI2GFeYnw=w1598-h693-no

    Bits required:
    1. Clutch
    2. Inter-cooler pipe work and silicone joiners
    3. RB25 Series 2 swap harness (Its my daily ill spend here to not tackle wiring)
    4. Custom Prop
    5. R33 half cut. (has to be a newer engine than the car to be legal)
    6. Radiator hoses/ cooling system (s13 rad or alu replacemnt)
    7. Service kit, Oil, oil pump,Water pump, Gearbox fluids, timing belt kit, Coolant, oil filter

    Other:
    Engineering Cert
    Larger injectors P2
    High flowed turbo P2
    Wire in Standalone ECU P2
    A shed/Garage
    Lift
    Luck
    Tools

Parts to be collected between now and start of April to spread the cost.
Half cut to be ordered end of March
