Hi all,

Palatal expander pain

    Just wondering if this is normal or not.

    I had a removable palatal expander put in last week and I must do a 1/4 turn every night. It is however very painful to put back in post turn. Its fine after 15mins or so but I wasn't expecting that level of pain.

    I am in my 40s, so I was also concerned I am too old for an expander but my dentist never brought that up as an issue.

    If you have pain go back.

    My wife had it done in her mid-20s, she not pain on the turn, but her nose always went numb for about 15 mins after each turn.

    Did you have surgery? I take it from your post that you did not?

    I had a surgery, and a permanent (3 months) expander at 30.

    My understanding would be that a palate expander, without surgery is of little use beyond your early to mid teens. Perhaps it's just being used to move your teeth outward, as opposed to the palate itself?
