Threre's one there from '82. 'Fast Times At Ridgemount High'
If I remember correctly, I saw this in Tuam cinema a few years later as part of a double bill. I THINK it was with Temple of doom.

I was thrilled at the time of course. It was just the type of movie little kids love! ww)

Anybody remember when they stopped doing B movies in this country?

I've been looking through this list all morning, and wondering if Tower are somehow exempt from this? I've seen a lot of the films on the list for sale in their DVD section.

    Anyone shed some light?

Emanuelle 2 (1977) was released on a double bill with Death Race 2000 in 1982 and as ban period lasts 7 years that suggests it was'nt banned in the first instance....How do I know this? I was at the flicks one Saturday night in early '82. Naturally it was Death Race 2000 that I paid to see! :ninja:

Jebus I can't belive they banned porkies, I suppose it was a terrible film. I'd be downloading them all now if my connection hadn't been capped:D
The hills have eyes is a great movie & I got my video of it in Tower a few years ago.

I remember the banning of some of these films (not all - I'm too young)

Ken Russell's Whore is a case in point. A year or two previously the big hit at the box-office was 'Pretty Woman', which, it could be argued, glorified the life of a call girl, while Russell's Whore portrayed a very stark reality.
I saw Whore in Paris in '92 and still can't really fathom why the hell it was banned by the Irish censor.

Other films on that list ... oh where do you start?
Life of Brian - can't you laugh at things? The censor obviously thought not.

This appears to be a list of films not granted a cinema certificate rather than a list of banned video/DVD releases, of which there are a LOT more. Interestingly, Baise Moi isn't there, suggesting that the distributors never submitted it for cinema certification. They did submit it for DVD certification, and it was banned. You can see the VRA prohibition orders in the state gazette here:
    http://www.irisoifigiuil.ie

A few points about our bad censorship sytem:

    - You have to wait 7 years before resubmitting a banned video/DVD for another attempt (it can work though; think Natural Born Killers or Texas Chainsaw Massacre)
    - Unlike a book, which is automatically unbanned after 12 years, once a video or DVD is banned it stays banned (unless it is resubmitted and passed)
    - It is illegal to posess a banned video/DVD (for sale at least; I think it's also illegal for personal use), whereas private cinema clubs can show films without cinema certificates. However, a court injunction can prevent this, as happened with Natural Born Killers in the IFC.

Oh, I forgot that the VRA only requires certificates on movies released after September 1994, although work is afoot to classify all the previous releases. This is how sex shops sell porn.

Bad Lieutenant just slipped into the VRA net, whereas I imagine you could find Whore for sale without a certificate (or with just the BBFC one which has no power here).

I wrote to the Irish Censor's office (info@ifco.gov.ie), and asked them for a list of all films that are currently banned. The list that fisty put up represents the result (incidentally, it was sent in a file called "LIST OF FILMS BANNED FROM 1973 TO DATE.lwp".

Is this how Tower is able to sell Dusk Till Dawn/Showgirls/whatever? By selling the BBFC certified disc?

Do they have a file called "LIST OF VIDEOS BANNED FROM 1994 TO DATE.lwp"? It would be a lot bigger, going by the number of ban notices in the State Gazette.

About Tower, there's a good chance that Showgirls and From Dusk Till Dawn were resubmitted and passed, or even that they never were banned on video in the first place. See if Tower sells Bad Lieutenant; it was resubmitted a while ago and stayed banned, presumably due to the infamous nun-raping scene*. If so, then kudos to them. I remember Virgin sold condoms years ago when you needed a prescription to get them, and ultimately got that ridiculous law changed.

You guys should be thanking the censor! He's protecting your fragile minds from all that harmful imagery! Who knows what you might do if exposed to the violence of "From Dusk Till Dawn"? Or the rape in "The Bad Lieutenant"? You should all be glad he makes these sacrifices for you, because you're just children really. The lot of ye. Ya can't make morale decisions for yourself, so he's gonna do it for ya. Let's send him, and our government, a thank you e-mail instead :D

The ban notices in the State Gazette are, as far as I can see, relating to the Video Recordings Act, 1989. I suspect those films on the list I was given by the censor's office are covered by the Censorship of Film Act, 1923. I've written to them, asking them to clarify this.

They do indeed. Or at least, they did. They're sold out as of Saturday.

Refused a cert because it was blasphemous. It's probably the only movie refused a cert for this reason (some of the documents from the 1920s have been lost). Whether we actually have a law on blasphemy (this not being the UK and all that) is another matter (yeah, I know what the Constitution says but "blasphemy" isn't defined in any Irish law).

(oddly enough the first time I ever say the movie was on a Good Friday. It became a family tradition after that)

It's OK for to possess it unless you intend to distribute it. Video Recordings Act 1989. It's an offence to supply an uncertified video work (s5(1)), to have such an article in one's possession for purposes of supply (s6(1)) or to exhibit it elsewhere than in a private dwelling (s11(1)).

With regard to prohibited works, it's an offence to possess for purposes of supply (s8(1)), to supply or offer to supply such a recording (s9(1)), to exhibit it elsewhere than in a private dwelling (s11(1)) or to import it into the State without a permit (s16(1)).

With regard to non-video works (er, in the flicks), the offfence is to show an uncertified movie in public (Censorship of Films Act 1923, as amended, section 5), hence film clubs get around this. Not if the movie is actually banned though presumably (in other words, if a prohibition order has been made) - different kettle of fish.

I've been told that blasphemy no longer has any force as regards speech due to a High Court ruling. Dunno when it was made though.

So, if I'm reading this correctly, it's perfectly okay then to buy a banned DVD off of a website? The importing part only refers to Irish distributers importing it from abroad whereas private ownership seems okay. So we can just circumvent all of this by using our credit cards online?

There has been no successful prosecution for blasphemy in Ireland since the 1850's. There was, however, a case in England in the 1970's where Mary Whitehouse successfully brought a case against Gay News magazine.

    Nope. http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/ZZA22Y1989S16.html:

( 3 ) ( a ) Where the Minister is satisfied that the proposed importation concerned would not be for the purpose—

    (i) of a supply, or of a supply other than to such limited extent as may be specified in the permit under this subsection, of the video recording concerned, or
(ii) of enabling the video work concerned to be viewed otherwise than to such limited extent as may be specified as aforesaid,
the Minister may, on application in writing therefor, grant a permit in writing authorising a specified person to import into the State a specified number of video recordings containing a specified video work in respect of which a prohibition order is in force for the time being and may specify in the permit conditions to which it is subject; and the holder of a permit under this subsection shall comply with any conditions to which it is subject.

So you need written permission to import a banned DVD or video. That said, I haven't seen the name of the movie written on the packaging any time I've ordered a DVD on the 'net.

Does Play not put it on the packaging? I vaguely remember seeing the title of a DVD I got off them on the address label.

Even if they do, what are the chances of An Post having a full list of banned DVDs, and caring enough to waste time checking?

AFAIK An Post do not check anything posted within the EU unless
something draws them to it...like "BANNED PORN IN HERE!"
stuff from the US on the other hand stands a much greater chance of being inspected....

    Mike.

AFAIR they did once upon a time but not on anything I've bought lately (just says "optical media").

DVDsoon.com put the name of the movie on the package, and i think a couple of Euro sites do also

Play just say Optical Media and the price.
    DVDsoon list the name.
    EzyDVD do too I think.

Chances of the Post office having a list of the banned dvds hanging on the wall and checking to make sure no dvds coming into the country are listed there is pretty slim me thinks. :)

No, but the customs guys will.

IIRC Bard mentioned about a year back that some scummy friend of his (presumably now a former friend) imported a few dodgy vids for a stag party and got Bard's address listed as the delivery address. Customs people were not impressed when they opened the package. Neither was the innocent party.

I'm wondering about a couple of films which IMDb state are currently banned in ireland, but which do not appear in the aforementioned list.

I Spit On Your Grave and Cannibal Holocaust.

I imported both from the US with ease, and have seen CH for sale in Virgin Megastore a few times (albeit in a butchered UK release).

    Any help appreciated.
