    Well I don't agree that it's silly.
There is a significant difference between bleeping out offensive language at pre-watershed times and re-writing the lyrics of a song to change its original content.

Censorship happens, that's true and it has for years. Doesn't make it right.
By censoring a song that has been played (both censored and uncensored) for years precisely because of faux outrage gives the impression that because tastes or sensibilities change that it is ok to revise the original work.

*I suddenly feel offended that at Christmas I am assailed by artwork depicting naked babies, it's practically pornographic!
I demand any images of a naked baby should be amended to protect my delicate sensibilities!

Furthermore all nude artwork should be "improved" by painted in bikinis!

It may totally detract from the artists intended impact and message, but shut my feelings trump Art*

*= May be hyperbolic, but it is a logical extension of this stance.

I know it's hyperbolic but if anyone complains because a naked baby is pornographic, they have bigger problems than their sensibilities.

Is Fairytale really modern chart music?

I never said it was  But the radio station that Eoghan McDermott works for, 2FM, plays modern chart music. Unless that's changed recently?

Shes obviously calling him a bundle of sticks that can be used to heat his cosy home. No need for the censoring. She'd want him to be warm at christmas. Very thoughtful.

It was also used as an old English insult for degenerate losers.

The Americans were the ones to use it as a homosexual slur.

I see rory cowan has said mcdermott and his offended friends are eejits and stuff like this detracts from real gay issues. And I agree.

This in a nutshell captures the stupidity of much of this "i am offended" screeching....it is a few people trying to impose their views on everybody or the same few speaking on behalf of others when they've no right to.

There's a lot of people really offended on here at the thought of a word being censored on here.

It's hardly like most other curse words get censored now is it...

I wouldn't say people are offended. Annoyed would be more appropriate.

Twitter really is going to bring down humanity. I couldnt give a **** if they censor it or not but its no surprise all this PC nonsense the last 10 years coincides with the birth and rise of Twitter.

As for the word, I understand it might offend some Gay people however when I was growing up in Dublin the word had a different meaning, when you called someone a ****** it wasn't over their sexuality it was just they were a windbag or whatever.

Won't lose sleep either way if its censored or not but its border line ridiculous now, how much of a safe space do people want in society, if it really offends you then switch off the song.

Did a bit of research into the origin of the slur in the USA

****** and 'fag' first appear in the Jackson and Hellyers 1914 publication 'A vocabulary of criminal slang with examples of common usages.'

'Bulldyking' was the term for lesbians.

What on earth does that mean?

Isn’t that Dire straits song “money for nothing” censored as well?

“See the little ****** with the earring and the make-up
Yeah buddy that's his own hair
That little ****** got his own jet airplane
    That little ****** he's millionaire”

I think this verse has been completely left out for years.

What I get from that is the people disparaging MTV millionaire man as a little ****** are jealous, spiteful assholes and the lyrics allude to the idea that people who use ****** by way of insult to feel better about themselves are spiteful, jealous assholes. A sort of cognitive dissonance. They want to be rich with jet airplanes themselves but MTV man is a little ****** and they can console themselves that they don't have them by using insults.

Personally, I'd be glad to get a break from that song - It's been over-played to death, would be quite happy to never hear it again.

Me too. Great song... that I’d be happy if I never heard again.

Please just censor Eoghan McDermott - the airwaves would be a much better place - shock/profanity has always been a part of good rock n'Roll from the Sex Pistols to NWA - if you dont get , get off the airwaves - for those offended listen to the Ronan Keating version or Daniel O'Donnell , but let us enjoy our rock nroll undiluted

I don't like too much nostalgia every xmas. I don't wan't to watch Only Fools and Horses every year or listen to 80's top xmas songs.

Sorry, what? I appreciate that not every use of the word "fággot" is necessarily intended to be homophobic but it absolutely was, is and will continue to be used as a gay slur in this country.

Anyway, I concur with the sensible posters who recognise that this song has been played in censored format for several years along with tons of other music with swearing/offensive language in it. I appreciate that a lot of the NPCs love to moan about PC brigade this and snowflakes that, so crack on and do what makes you happy, for 'tis the season to be happy and joyous :)

Eoghan McDermott used the word ‘simples’ to conclude his explanation.

This is why he must, without hesitation, be shot in the face with bullets fashioned from his own frozen shyte.

Why do some people on here get so annoyed about the idea of that word being bleeped? Swearwords are regularly bleeped from songs, and there doesn't seem to be any kind of outcry. What is it about that particular word that you love so much?

sorry not up to date on my snowflake sounds :D -

i find Eoghan McDermott and his like , the anthesis of what rock nroll is about , is it any wonder modern music is in such a poor state , when he is a modern mouthpiece for for our national music broadcaster.

With the bit about asking the 2 gay lads there's the suggestion of not playing it at all.

So it could go the way of Baby It's Cold Outside.
