Too many doors on that one.

why's that? Why is the 2-door better?

They just look better IMO, and it was the 2 door that spawned all the motorsport sucess. Still though, having said that, if you really want an Escort the 4 door is the cheaper option these days.

Yea they do. Alright fair enough, how much can i expect to pay for a 2-door of the same condition?

Not necessarily better, Just more sought after.

The Rally boys love the 2-door cos they were one of the great rally cars of their era.

They're still being raced in large numbers today.

Now, with Rallying, there's always a certain amount of 'casualties' every year.

Mk 2s haven't been produced for 30 odd years, so they're a finite resource.

Hence the high demand for 2-door shells.

The 4-door isn't as structurally rigid as the 2-door, so the 'Rallyists' aint too keen on them.

    Hence their lower value.

So valuewise for the mk 2, it's definitaly a case of

2 doors good. 4 doors bad.

Im sure theres still loads of two door Escort shells in sheds around this country, just most guys wont part with them.
There is talk of new shells being produced, but i dont think they will come cheap.

That one seems a fraction overpriced. For an extra few bob, you could buy a running sound 4 door. 1300 crossflows (which he is charging extra for) are making about 50 quid (1300GT crossflows are making a lot more) so unless the 1300 is the cars original engine, it's worth very little. Also, make sure the engines are not Cortina ones as the sumps are different. Also, it seems to be a mix & gather'um of Mexico bumpers, RS paint etc. With the pinto for sale, I'm wondering if the plan of the seller was a 4 door RS replica.

As for the 2 door against 4 door, the 2 doors are worth twice to three times the 4 door for the same trim level. It's simply down to the fact that all fast Escorts (Sport/Mexico/RS2000/RS1800) were 2 door and it's so easy to make replicas.

If you're serious, find a friend who really knows them and take them along. Escorts rust everywhere (doors, A-Pillars, wheel arches, strut tops, floors, slam panel, spare wheel well, fuel tank well etc). Mechanical parts are easy to get from the likes of Burton Power, The Escort Agency, West Wales Rally Spares etc. Certain trim items can be next to impossible to get. Chassis numbers are stamped on the Right Hand Strut top, and chassis plate decoders are available online so you can see what the car was built with (engine, axle ratio etc).

I've currently got a 1300 2 door Ghia, with the original 1300GT engine still running. It's almost original, except for a 32/36 DGV Weber instead of the original 32/34 DGV, minilight wheels and a few goodies in the engine. The purists need not worry. All original parts are in storage.

Edit - Just noticed that car has no servo or evidence of a servo. Servos were fitted to all Escorts except the bargin basement models (Popular, L & vans). Brakes will not be good compared to a modern car.....

Save the shillings and buy a nice two door, you will be better off in the long run. Just be careful as there's a lot of rubbish out there.

Rubbish - You're not half right!

I was looking at a "nice 1600 Sport" for a friend. The car started life as a 1100 popular plus (evident from the chassis plate) but the owner insisted it was a genuine Sport.

The paint was stunning, pity about half the spare wheel well coming off in my hand! There was other structural problems as well. Also, some of the trim was not correct (centre console, door cards, wrong colour needles on the clocks etc). The seller wanted 8K for the car (and still on UK plates)

There was a white 2 door escort up for sale on done deal a few days ago for €2950. Clean looking too! Didn't last long I can tell ya - I would say his phone was hopping!

Problem with many of these cars is alot of have been 'restored' by guys looking to make a handy profit. Only when you dig in will you see all the work done.

In ‘Classic Ford’ recently there was a small article about somebody who converted a mk2 from 4 to 2 doors. It think it was in the Far East and the author suggested that perhaps that in the UK doing the same would be unnecessary due to cost and availability of 2 doors.

Now I’m not trying to say that Rally fabrication is easy and I hope I’m not over simplifying here but surely if you are going to seam weld, fit a bigger transmission tunnel, four link the rear end, fit bubble arches, weld in a role cage etc... That the idea of moving back the b-pillars and modifying the quarter panels to fit the 2-door doors is hardly light years away in terms of fabrication skills???

Now for the amateur enthusiast a two door conversion is out of the question but surely the big boys in rally preparation shouldn’t really be afraid of converting them and hence ease the pressure on supply of 2 doors

In the US anything with more than 2 doors is called a 'moredoor':D

Converting to 2 door from 4 door is a fairly straight conversion especially if you already have the '2 door' door.
Heres a lad who did a Consul using a second door to extend it.

Back in the day a lot of 2 door and 4 door cars were the same length but the 2 doors had a longer door and shorter quarter panel or whatever. Wouldn't imagine it's the same today though.

dont think i'll be converting a 4 door anytime soon. i'll just hold out and wait for the 2 door

im a mk2 escort owner, mexico to be exact, very rare car in an original state but restored back in the mid 90's.....that 4 dr is cheap if the body is solid, it all depends on what you want to do with it....
make your own car (ie by a shell and do all the bits n bobs yourself)
    or
buy a car fully done (ie get in and turn the key)

when i was on the hunt i wanted a mk1 mexico, rare car 10 years ago and even rarer now, the mk2 was at the right money so i had to have it....:D

there are alot of nice cars for sale, the min or there abouts you will need for a turn key car is €10k, meaning condition 1, you could buy an RS for that money....
theres a nice mk2 down beside me for sale at 10k, rs1800 replica with a 1600xflow engine (i think).....was on donedeal a while back....
you would pick up a car with a higher spec engine, running gear etc for the same price if you look hard enough....
your in proper rally country up there and should be able to get a mk2 across the border for a good price.....:D

as i said it all depends on what you want????? keep us informed of what you buy & best of look in your search :)
