To early to make that call just yet .
From an economic point of view ... Losing both events would cost the city tens of millions in revenue .
Imagine by the 1st of June if we had gone tru the worst of this , the government announced that people could go back to work and socialise .
I don't expect our airports / and ports to be allowed to accept tourists for all of 2020 .
Galway arts and racing festival could be Irish peoples only holiday of the year .
The month of April is going to be huge regarding how this all plays out .

Potentially the races could run behind closed doors.

    They could ... But ...
They wouldn't allow it if bookies / pubs / restaurants and hotels were still shut .
They all go hand in hand .
We need to get on top of this in April ... As in reach our peak .
What's wordying is NOT the amount of testing been done BUT the length of time it's taken for results to come true .
Wouldn't be at all surprised if the amount of testers in labs is shockingly low and that's where the problem is .

wimbledon and the Olympic were due to run in July/August and have both been cancelled

Problem is if at the end of this month if we have zero cases for 15 full days once we have flights open from active areas we have potential to be back where we are today within 2 or 3 weeks. They need to isolate all visitors from countries with active cases.

Totally different events and can’t be compared to the races from a logistics point of view (qualifying also etc). Also Wimbledon starts mid June which is a lot closer.

The races could be a fairly late call imo no need to be jumping into cancelling the biggest week of the year in Galway. It could be the saviour of many businesses in Galway too which can’t be forgotten.

They need to be making the call fairly soon tbh

Would be surprised if a decision made on galways 2 major events would be made before May 1st .
If at all possible we need to reopen by July 1st .
    That's 13 weeks away still .
A lot ( as has been proven over past month ) can change in the next 13 weeks .

I think both will be cancelled, would look very bad on the city if events all over the country and world are being cancelled but these were to go ahead.

The Irish open due to be held in may in Kilkenny has been cancelled, that's probably the highest profile event cancelled so far.

Flights other than cargo should be suspended indefinitely really.

This makes it sound like we aren't letting in flights from affected areas today. On the contrary on the radio they were talking about a flight of 150+ people coming in from New York. I don't think we've locked out any flights yet and there is no forced quarantine for new arrivals.

    Why?

To avoid a disaster like the 2020 opening where it was called off too late

Fail to prepare prepare to fail

Both will not be going ahead.

We won't be done with covid-19 until there is a vaccine so large scale events will all be cancelled or be modified to such an extent as to largely negate the local value of them

Another important aspect to remember is the sponsorship. By the time the races come around a lot of the existing sponsors may have gone to the wall. One big race is sponsored by a car sales company..... Can't imagine too many sales happening

    Too late for what?

I'm sure there are preparations for a variety of scenarios going on already. Including but not limited to cancellation.

There is zero chance that either will go ahead.

Surely people's health is more important than a few hoteliers, Publicans and bookies

Yes health is obviously more important that a few hoteliers / publicans/ bookies ....
But a country's economy is also extremely important .
Having employment for peoples mental state is extremely important.
Having people working paying their taxes is extremely important .
These providers of same are EXTREMELY IMPORTANT .
When we finally get to deal with the virus , you will be extremely thankful , as will any other person living in Ireland , of any business that provides employment to deal with the mess that's going to be left over after all this .

Of course the economy is extremely important that goes without saying. However people will be very cautious about how they will now spend there time after the business closure ban has been lifted. Will they want to pack into a public house on shop street during race week? I don't think they will the same goes for the racecourse ,Gaa matches and even hotels! Who knows who has been in the hotel room the night before.

So definitely Health has to placed higher than the needs of the economy right now.

Health is priority right now with the government ... That's why we have shutdowns .
There is no need at the moment or even in the month of April to make a decision regarding arts / racing festival .
Even in May it's still plenty of time to make that decision.
Galway business's are going to need all the help when/ if they're to reopen.
Those 3 weeks will be vital for any business going forward .
If galway remains closed for those 3 weeks the problems
for many business's would go to another level .
A decision regarding Olympic Games / Wimbledon etc have to made much quicker because they are world renowned events .
As people already know the arts / racing festivals can get some businesss throw the winter up to Christmas .

It starts a month and a half before the races. There is no need to be making any decision until June at the earliest.

I am fully aware and fully agree with people health being important but why cancel something that may well be safe to go ahead with by the time it comes around.

There is zero talk of cancelling the All-ireland championship for example either.
