Horror start to Anzac Day long weekend on WA roads

A 23-YEAR-OLD Irishman on a working holiday is the fourth victim of traffic carnage following a crash in Perth late last night.

The crash marked a horrific start to the Anzac Day long weekend on WA's roads after three others were killed in crashes yesterday.

Police were told the dead man and another Irishman, aged 19, both living in Scarborough, had about three months of their visas left.

A third Irishman in the car, aged 32, was from Doubleview.

He and the 19-year-old are in RPH in a stable conditions after being taken from the crash by St John Ambulance with serious multiple trauma injuries.

Their Toyota Corolla hatchback crashed into a power pole at the Herbert St-Sackville Tce intersection, Doubleview, about 10.30pm yesterday.

The impact of the single car crash crushed the Corolla, snapped the pole and brought down 240v power lines.

The man was killed after being partially ejected from the Corolla.

His friends gathered at the roadside, distraught and crying while talking to police.

``He is my mate. We just went to a party. I don't want to talk about it,'' an Irish-accented male friend of the dead man said.

Police are investigating if the men were wearing seatbelts, if the victims were at the party and a report the Corolla overtook a taxi on the straight, dry road several hundred metres before the crash.
``The early indication is that speed was a factor in the crash,'' Major Crash Squad Snr Const Mark Matthews said.

A local resident, who did not wish to be named, said she had been told the Corolla came ``flying up'' behind the taxi.

One of the survivors was out of the crashed car when police arrived.

The other had to be cut free, it is understood.

Earlier yesterday, a woman was killed when a car hit a truck near the Marangaroo Dve-Wanneroo Rd intersection, Marangaroo, about 2pm.

Three others were taken from the crash with serious injuries.

A man aged in his 50s was killed after a crash in Meckering, in the Wheatbelt, in the morning.

Two other crash victims were taken to hospital.

A 39-year-old man died in hospital after a crash in Bentley, in Perth's southern suburbs, at 7am.

    RIP
