no the only car related business they're involved in now is car reposession ! Very very hard to get finance now a days with out a personal letter of recommendation from the pope and even then they have to consider it very closely

Was speaking to a friend of mine in the trade and he told me the only people he has seen approved recently were public servants and at that the bank wanted 25% up front!

Yep! they got out of the business over a year ago, in fact i think they even gave up on car repossessions!

I'm actually amazed at all the positive news on new car sales, is it just spin and BS because all i am hearing from many friends is refusal after refusal.

couldnt agree more......for the laugh I went to AIB looking for a 25k car loan just to see the lie of the land. I have a good job and my account is in good shape.........I was escorted out of the bank without my feet touching the ground. Fellas , banks have closed shop.....period.

yes they are,I financed my new car with them 2 weeks ago, they only asked for €1000 deposit and the rate was slightly lower than my own bank

Just curious, which bank and why are they asking for such a desposit, gone were the times you could go to a main dealer, choose the finance?

I know of three people personally, all in good jobs and i assume good credit records, Bank of Ireland, PTSB and AIB refused, instead two went to their credit union (actually wiser as they are personal loans rather than silly hire purchase/lease deals) and the third got limited finance through Ulster, he had to put up 1/3 and a trade in. Hardly worth the hastle.

More likely to get a personal loan from credit union or bank rather than HP agreement due to more people using half-rule?

i got a 14k loan from Ge back in 2006 still paying the f&&k off. which was meant to be a 5 year loan would wont be up till March 2012 taking 230 out of my bank every month, before they tried taking 415 a month saying that after so many months that it goes up. I had War with them, worked it out i'll be paying back Nearly 20k

the biggest Rip off Company i ever faced. but PTSB would never hand out loans not matter in the Tiger or not.

knew a person that had some bit of money in his Account. and with out taking it out to buy a car they went for a loan from the TSB, they said no. so he moved right away to Ulster bank.

I'm also with TSB but is moving to Ulster Bank.

To be fair, i re arranged a small outstanding balance from a 2004 purchase with GE and they were accommodating, this said, the balance was only about €1.700 and if they wanted to pursue this amount, legal fees alone would outstrip this amount. I read in the herald recently, some poor sod had is VAN repossessed with lots of tools in it, I doubt the full true story was being told as he claimed only €1,900 was outstanding on a €9,000 loan, based on this he more than paid 2/3 off the value of the car, meaning the bank acted outside the legal boundaries regarding repossession which can only occur if less than half the loan has been paid off, other than that, they are required in law to take court proceedings to take possession of the vehicle. The up shot of that particular story "according to the customer" was he agreed with the bank "Bank of Scotland" to pay the outstanding balance to get his van back, they agreed but the van was sold on and with his tools, the word Gob****e comes to mind.

Bottom line re GE Money, they are done with the Irish Car Loan market and have been so for almost two years, any one struggling with current agreements should contact them, they are in no position to argue the toss and certainly not in a position to repossess.

So you are saying any one with Ge Loan within a low amount 1000 just dont pay it any more and let them ring away and dont pick up?

was thinking about that before just dont pay and let them take the car. as i'm after paying back twice as much as what the car is worth and still 2years left on it
back in the good days i was paying 359 and 420 at one stage what a rip off if you ask me

Even if you did manage to get away with that, you could forget about borrowing money again.

Ring them, explain the circumstances and come to an arrangement with them that suits you both.

Don't stop paying or they'll be out to reposses your car within 2 months. Come to an arrangement and you could well end up paying less overall for the car.

    Hi Anan1,

I was not suggesting that customers don't pay outstanding balances, instead i was recommending customers in difficulty with existing credit agreements with GE money should contact them and make arrangements that are more manageable. GE Money have stopped doing car loans in the Irish Market for quite some time and they are essentially winding down operations here. There goal is to get existing agreements paid in full or at least the original value cleared. I estimate most GE Money agreements currently outstanding will have passed the half rule mark or in most cases passed the point were re possession without court proceedings are required. I had a car loan with them with a small balance outstanding, payments stood at €210, I Basically called them and offered €150 and they agreed, plus gave me a settlement figure with a small discount. Admittedly the amounts were quite small.

With regard to the point about not getting finance anywhere else, lets call a spade a spade. There are very few left out there that have not missed a payment whether it be a mortgage, car loan, personal loan etc. Once this has happened the wonderful ICB kick in and i doubt there are many of us out there who would either consider applying for a loan or indeed get one for that matter in the current climate regardless. I heard recently the latest consequence of the Banking debacle is the thousands of customers from Halifax and Post bank who can not open current accounts (even with no credit facilities) in other institutions for the sample purpose of managing direct debits etc. Bottom line, this banking disaster appears to be getting worse.

Those in difficulty need to prioritize their outgoings, the consequences unfortunately are here to stay and will be felt for many years to come i fear.
