    Hi,
My friend is looking for a band for her wedding August 2008, and anyone she likes is booked up, so she is getting desperate to book someone now.
She would prefer a full band, like guitar, drums etc. Can anyone recommend a good band??

I have to recommend these guys, they are based in Donegal but travel and have even done concert gigs. Amazing talent.
www.keltickaos.com -- website may not have been updated in a while though, we used them at our wedding two years ago.

    Hi,
We used a band called Fraggle Rock in Galway, and Benen Tierney for the DJ. Our budget was 2000 euro, and it worked out fine.

Have to say the band were excellent, they played a nice varied set, and as a musician myself I can honestly say that they were very professional at their job and knew exactly what they were doing, they entertained the crowd very well, and best of all they let me and my ex-band up to play!

Shane from Fraggle rock also recommended our DJ, Benen Tierney, who was an absolute legend. We gave him a list of songs we wanted played, which he said he was very happy to play, as he enjoyed most of the ones we suggested. He also brought out inflatable guitars and saxaphones and stuff, which went down a treat with our drunken crowd (myself very much included).

All in all, you could do a lot worse than this combination, as they seemed to work very well together - the band were setup very quickly after the meal finished, and the DJ was there to play as soon as the band finished (he even played a song that was in a similar genre to the last song the band played, so it was a pretty seemless changeover)

Anyway, I hope this helps and your big day goes well for you!

    Best of luck,

    Paul

Oh yeah, and if at all possible get receipts for everything. Our guys were very good with receipts and phone reminders and it was comforting to know that they had their sh*t together.

At the risk of getting banned, I would like to just add that my equipment has been comepletly updated with the very latest technology and professional digital DJ tools. I now have a 1600W sound system, smoke, bubbles, laser, gobo, moonflower and UV lighting. I also have a new piece of equipment called a 00DJ - the James Bond of DJing!

This will certainly make an impression on your guests and can be integrated into any house PA system as well as being compact, quick and easy to set up. Please visit my new website here for more information, pictures and a no obligation quote.

All the best wishes to anyone getting married in the near future and may you both have many happy years together. :D

Well folks, couldn't ignore all the band pimping going on here, so here goes:

    http://www.thespectrums.com

We're a live band (no backing tracks ;-) who do pop and rock from the 80's, among other things.

    Cheers.

i agree with previous poster, you get what you pay for. Some bands may be cheaper but they're not strickly wedding bands, i have to second 'the great escape', they're brill, i'm getting married in 7 weeks & was going to book them but by the time i got around to making final decision they have booked up. I have booked eamonn toal, he's main guy in band & theres two others with him, he's based in dunshaughlin, meath. The other band i was going to go for is joanna & tequila sunrise, amazing band but at an amazing price too so we opted for eamonn toal. I think the norm for a wedding band is 1500 & then you pay extra for dj around 400 mark so full package in or around 1900 - 2k.

Yes, you choose the songs and then I make it up for you. Either in standard audio format for CD player or MP3 for use on computer. I also will print a customised CD cover for you. Check my website for more info.
So, not only are you posting more than the single post allowed for plugging services, you also give away CD's of copyrighted material whose royalties you don't own. I'm sure IRMA will love you

We went with the Kaye Twins for our wedding, and they were absolutely brilliant. They were really good at getting everyone up on the dance floor, and so many of our guests were complimenting our choice.

Edit - we got Digital DJs for after, and Daragh was excellent also.

Surely the cost of the mp3's are included in my price for my services? This is an ongoing battle with the PRS. IRMA et al. In the UK I had to have a licence for all my songs which cost about £250 per year. I had to give a list of all the songs on my computer, and the ones I played at gigs.

But yes I see your point savman about copyright issues. But does that mean everyone who copies a cd and transfers it to a mp3 player is breaking the law? if you check this link they are http://www.digitalrights.ie/2006/07/10/irish-times-article-on-technology-and-consumers-rights/ BTW I have not been able to connect to the site today!
Yes actually it is breaking copyright law. That's not to say we don't all do it anyway, but giving out free music CD's in a commercial capacity is a whole different ball game.

DJ Spider: A couple of things. Generally the rule is only one post pimping your services is allowed in the bands thread. Aside from that, the whole copyright dodginess will have to be snipped, as it could be damaging to boards.ie itself. I'm going to merge your posts into one post, and snip the naughtiness. Please don't advertise again. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,958 ✭✭✭DJ_Spider

Point taken Shabadu, I think the whole copyright law is a very grey area, and it it probably best we all keep our opions to ourselves! Anyway I will back off with the advertising. Have a good week all.

Any chance of a web address or telephone number for Fifth Avenue??

i got a great wedding band and ad for 1,650 it was the cheapest around

I read this thread and as a musician feel you need to realize that you get what you pay for. Any band that does a job very cheap is moreoften a desperate outfit, will arrive late, will play badly, will be drunk on stage, look bad ie. not in suits or badly dressed, repeat songs, take too many breaks etc. Generally speaking you get what you pay for.

For anyone considering that musicians are scamming you out of money, or that you feel that you are beenconned in any way, consider the following criteria in relation to charge.

    This is specialised work.
Music is prob one ofthe most remembered parts of any wedding day so it needs to be good.
Musicians are tied down for the entire evening, setting up, travel, waiting etc, its not just 2 or 3 hours work
Tax, pensions, health/life insurance etc all has to come out of the fee.

hope you get the band you are looking for and dont be afraid to pay the extra few hundread euro, it will probably be well worth it

We have a roadie who sets up before the gig, and he's there at about 2pm. We land on at about 8 on the off chance that speeches finish early, we then have to wait for the hotel staff to clear tables off the dance floor, and setup the remainder of our equipment and lighting, get changed into uniforms, tune up, and then herd the crowd outside smoking/drinking back in. We have to play for a few hours, and then wait for the DJ to finish before breaking the equipment down, and packing it away.

So Eddie73's very correct, it's an extremely long night for most bands, and far from the 2/3 hours people think it is. I reckon we end up working about 7-8 hours for an average wedding, and that's not including travelling time.
