Remarkable to be nominated for your first leading role (?) when you look at the other nominees - Hugh Jackman, Jeremy Irons, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Pope (Tony nominee and Broadway star).

Great to see a normal lad doing well. Pun actually wasn't intended.. but I didn't get the hype of the show. It was nothing special imo

It was a good enough program.

if we had a series of Love Island this year he'd be mentioned very little on Instrgram and other social media sites now in my opinion now.
Whilst the program would still get nominated for awards.
So, I'll stick to my opinion.

Wasn't there a Love Island series earlier in the year that flopped?

I also think they appeal to very different audiences.

RTE have gone way overboard on plugging this show at every opportunity.

For a couple of weeks there seemed to be a new non story about the cast on a daily or near daily basis.

    Yep and completely unnecessary.

    It turned off huge audiences

    Total overkill

RTE always do that with a new show. Just look at how they relentlessly promoted Love/Hate.

I'm sick of seeing his face to be quite frank. I didn't even watch NP but at this rate I feel like I'm living a portion of my life as his.

Danial Day Lewis never got this much media attention and I'm sorry but from the clips I've seen I don't see any Oscar nominations coming any times soon.

He's no Brad Pitt either, I mean he might get a a degree of attention in Coppers but in the grand scheme of things - slightly above average.

Fair play to him for his 'making it' an all, but jezz, we'll be reading how often he goes to the bathroom per day if this level of media attention doesn't abate.

    It seems to divide opinion.

I thought in parts it was brilliant. More like a novel in how it put you in the shoes of the characters. The episode in the Italian villa could have been a movie in itself.

There were some glowing unprompted positive reviews in the UK Sunday Times readers section. Not just teenagers. People who said it reminded them of being an undergrad in the early 60s.

Most ppl I talked to found it boring and shallow and not worth watching

I dont think it was shallow at all.
It looked like that on the surface with the two attractive leads getting their kit off but there were depths of emotion there most TV shows dont even know exist.

If he keeps Kathryn Thomas, Lottie Ryan, Vogue etc out of the media for a while, I say good on him.

Whatever about getting out there in the media, the amount of articles (geared towards women) saying how much of a ride he and his character is (and the almost fetish fascination with his chain) bordered on creepy. You just know if there was half as many pieces on how hot Daisy Edgar Jones is, it would be called out as misogynist.

Then again, it brings to mind the fact that it wasn't men that made Magic Mike so popular. Or Fifty Shades. It isn't males screaming from the top of their lungs whenever <INSERT NEW YOUNG MALE SINGER/BOYBAND> enters on stage either.

Women are, by and large, far more openly pervy than men :D

Funnily enough given the right project i think he well has it in him....... One particular scene in Normal People was as good acting as I have seen this year

Of my female friends, the Irish women are all like “Meh, he’s grand” and the non-Irish women are like “Schwing!”. They think he’s gorgeous whereas I feel like I’ve seen plenty of Mescals in my life.

OP acting is hardly a stable career, who knows how long this wave will last for him? You're hardly saying he should be turning down publicity interviews? Just let him enjoy it.

Overexposure can be a career-killer for an actor though. If too visible, it’s harder to disappear into roles. I know I get distracted when I see an overexposed actor in something. Thoughts of all those pap shots/that ad they’re in/whatever pop into my head. So it can feed the instability of the profession. It’s a fine balance.
Yes. He got the flute out

On that, In spar a few weeks ago I overheard a formerly well known and longstanding ac-tor (rough magic /abbey and various small roles in likes or fair city and crime line reconstructions) refer to him in a snobby d4 voice as “one step above Pornhub for god sake”

I think there’s a lot of jealousy and bitchiness in the Irish acting scene

    I would well believe it.

Yes The Guardian & Daily Mail did the usual thing claiming him and Andrew Scott as British.

    Why do they do this?

    Yes but it happens regularly.

I think it's more than that. I've met several UK people who think Ireland is part of the UK. Unreal.

    Lol what?

It more than doubled the previous viewership record for the RTE player, replacing the record that had been set by Love/Hate, and did similar at the BBC.

How did you get the idea that "huge audiences" were turned off given those figures?

he finally seized the denny, fair play, or at least had some english chick pretending to be from sligo to seize his denny.

i always paraphrased np as 'balibalihaunis reads camus'

    good luck to him

He needs to go on a Jonathan Rhys Myers type drunken downward spiral and they wont be long getting his nationality right.

Ah in fairness to him he's nominated for a few Emmy's which is massive for a TV actor. His life has totally changed the last few months. Seems a grounded lad too to hear in an interview unlike yer man Barry Keoghan whose ego seems to be off the scale.

He can do nothing about the standard of journalism today and as he said himself, his next goal after Normal People is to secure his next bit of work so he's quite correctly taking advantage of the hype and keeping himself in the limelight.

They had a couple of nonsense articles on the homepage yesterday and I see it's one of the top stories today.

I'm completely sick of hearing about it.

A welcome break from interviews with Love Islands wannabes.

The bar is set really high these days
