    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 5 to 11 May

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 3 deg below normal.

-- Rainfall will average near normal (most of it will occur Tuesday to Thursday) but above normal in parts of the south, and perhaps below normal in the north.

-- Sunshine will average below normal, with more generous amounts today but longer intervals of persistent cloud later in the week.

-- Winds will be generally light north to northeast until Tuesday then moderate northeast to east in direction.

    FORECASTS ...

TODAY will start out frosty in places again, sunny at first with a gradual increase in higher cloud in parts of the west and south, cool with light winds, and highs 9 to 13 C.

TONIGHT will be rather cloudy in the north with light rain developing by morning, lows near 4 C. Central and southern counties will have longer clear intervals and could see scattered light ground frost although not quite as cool as the past two nights, lows 1 to 4 C.

MONDAY will be cloudy with some sunny breaks, and showery outbreaks of light rain in parts of Ulster and Connacht mostly, and isolated showers in parts of west Munster by afternoon, with highs 10 to 14 C.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY will bring stronger east to northeast winds, possibly reaching 50 to 80 km/hr in exposed parts of the south, and outbreaks of rain becoming persistent and heavy in some places in south Leinster and Munster by Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Highs only about 8 to 11 C. Winds will back from northeast to north as the disturbance moves into Britain on Wednesday. Slow clearing will follow in western counties but it will remain unsettled in the east.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY will continue quite chilly for May, with highs only 8 to 12 C, and outbreaks of light rain, that could turn sleety on higher terrain in the north. Winds will become more northwest then variable as more weak disturbances form in the cold air mass.

The OUTLOOK calls for a slow moderation to near normal temperatures through the weekend of 11th-12th and somewhat warmer by Monday into Tuesday, but then another spell of cooler and unsettled weather may follow on northeast winds.

My local weather on Saturday was cloudy with highs near 14 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 7 to 13 May

-- Temperatures will average about 2 degrees below normal values. There will be a slow warming trend late in the interval.

-- Rainfall will be near normal for most, somewhat above in the south and parts of the northwest.

-- Sunshine will be below average, but will begin to improve later in the period so that overall the result may be about 75% of the normal 5 to 6 hours a day.

-- Winds will become moderate northeast then later northwest in the interval, before dropping back to light near weekend of 11th-12th.

    FORECASTS:

TODAY will be mostly cloudy with a few brighter intervals, showers gradually increasing in coverage, leading to outbreaks of rain in the south by evening. Winds will increase to east-northeast 40 to 70 km/hr. Highs 11 to 14 C.

TONIGHT ... rain heavy at times in the south with 15 to 25 mm possible there, more showery further north with 5 to 10 mm more typical. Milder with moderate northeast winds, lows near 8 C.

WEDNESDAY will see further rainfalls of 5-15 mm in parts of the south and east, more scattered and showery further north where skies may become partly cloudy at times, remaining quite cool in northeast to north winds 40 to 70 km/hr, lows near 8 C and highs 11 to 13 C.

This warmer spell will gradually cool back to lower teens in more of an easterly flow but current indications are that this will be quite gradual so most of next week could remain rather warm once it does warm up.

My local weather on Monday was sunny with afternoon cloudy intervals, breezy but warmer at about 19 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 8 to 14 May

-- Temperatures will average near normal values but this will be a blend of below normal readings today to Saturday and above normal by Monday and Tuesday.

-- Rainfall will be near normal for most, somewhat above in the south but a lot of this will have fallen by tonight and almost all by Friday. A dry spell of about five days will follow.

-- Sunshine will be below average, but will begin to improve later in the period so that overall the result may be about 75% of the normal 5 to 6 hours a day.

-- Winds will stay moderate northeast today but will drop back to lighter values for most of the interval after that.

    FORECASTS:

TODAY will bring further rainfalls of 5-15 mm in parts of the south and east, more scattered and showery further north where skies may become partly cloudy at times by afternoon and evening, in general it will remain quite cool in northeast to north winds 40 to 70 km/hr, with highs of 11 to 13 C.

TONIGHT will be cloudy with a few showers, moderate northerly winds at times, and lows near 7 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with some heavy showers with thunder and hail possible, spreading in from west to east, and highs near 13 C although it could be even cooler in Ulster.

FRIDAY will continue cool with a few more showers, lows near 6 C and highs near 13 C.

SATURDAY will become partly cloudy with just isolated outbreaks of light rain and somewhat more sunshine in the mix, lows near 2 C and highs near 14 C.

SUNDAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals, just a slight chance of low cloud and drizzle near northwest coasts, and light winds in most of the country, with frosty lows of -2 to +3 C and highs near 16 C.

MONDAY to WEDNESDAY will become warmer with generous amounts of sunshine, some tendency to cloudier skies in the west at times, but warm temperatures in the 19 to 24 C range, cooled by sea breezes near the south and east coasts.

The outlook is for this warm spell to become cloudier with increasing threats of showery rainfall later in the week, but only a slight decrease in temperatures, if any.

My local weather on Tuesday was sunny with cloudy intervals and reasonably warm near 17 C. There was a fairly widespread outbreak of severe storms in Texas and Oklahoma which will redevelop in southern Texas, eastern Oklahoma and parts of Missouri and Arkansas today.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week ahead 9 to 15 May 2019

-- Temperatures will average about 1 deg above normal on average, starting out somewhat below but ending up 3 or 4 deg above normal before the end of the weekly interval.

-- Rainfall mostly today and tomorrow will average about half the normal weekly amount as the rest of the weekly interval will be dry.

-- Sunshine will average near normal after a cloudy start to the weekly period.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy in some eastern counties, with scattered outbreaks of light rain continuing. The heavier falls will be 5 to 10 mm in parts of Leinster and east Ulster. Some longer dry intervals are likely in west Munster and south Connacht. Some heavier and possibly thundery showers will develop this afternoon in the midlands. Highs 10 to 13 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy and rather cool with lows 1 to 4 C. A few isolated showers are likely.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy with a few isolated showers, and highs 11 to 14 C.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy with sunny intervals more generous in south and west, morning lows near 2 C and afternoon highs near 14 C.

SUNDAY will feature hazy sunshine and after a cool start, lows 1 to 4 C, a warmer day with highs near 16 C.

NEXT WEEK will become quite warm with sunshine for most although cloudier in parts of the northwest, and highs will range from the low 20s in west and midlands to 16 C near south and east coasts and in parts of Ulster. There will be southeast winds of about 20 to 40 km/hr creating a sea breeze environment for south and east coasts.

This warm spell may eventually turn into a cooler spell of east to northeast breezes and highs closer to normal values (14 to 17 C).

My local weather on Wednesday was sunny with a high near 20 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week ahead, 10 to 16 May

-- temperatures will gradually warm up and the average will be 1 to 2 deg above normal.

-- rainfall will be generally rather light, 10 to 30 per cent of normal amounts.

-- sunshine will be relatively generous and may exceed normal values by 25% or more.

-- winds will be mostly light to moderate southeasterly after today and Saturday's northerly breezes.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers, with the exception of some heavier rain confined to east/central Ulster. Highs will reach about 14 C in the south and 10 C in the north.

TONIGHT will become clear at times and chilly with scattered light frost, lows -1 to +3 C.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny and cool with highs 12 to 15 C.

SUNDAY will feature hazy sunshine after a rather frosty start, lows -2 to +3 C and highs 13 to 16 C.

NEXT WEEK will be generally settled and rather warm, especially away from sea breeze cooled south and east coasts. Highs generally about 19 to 22 C but only 14 to 16 C in those sea breezes. Nights will be milder than this weekend but there could be isolated readings of 2 to 5 C among a more general range of 5 to 10 C for overnight lows. Winds will become moderate southeast to south at times by mid-week. The next widespread rain looks like being at least a week off and could be well into the following week.

My local weather was very pleasant with sunshine all day and a high near 21 C. Our small lake is generating a very localized chill so we are getting alternating 15 and 20 degree breezes which can be a bit disconcerting. There's lots of snow at high elevations so the local mountains are quite spectacular looking but the forests are dry after several months of below normal precipitation so we're being warned that the fire season may start soon as people get out camping more often.

With clear nights in your forecast too, you'll easily find Jupiter around midnight low in the south, and it's followed by fairly prominent Saturn. Venus is a bright morning star at the present time and only becomes visible around 0300h in the southeast (it appears similar to Jupiter but brighter, so the earlier appearing object is Jupiter not Venus). Mars is setting shortly after sunset these days and is above similar looking red star Aldebaran, all located to the upper right of Orion which sets a couple of hours after sunset. Mars is almost opposite the earth on the far side of the solar system so it's not anywhere near as bright as it was last summer (since it's four times as distant from us now).

-- Sunshine will average near normal, 5 to 6 hours a day.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will feature hazy sunshine and warm temperatures of 19 to 23 C except near some south and east facing coasts where sea breezes may hold down the maximum temperatures to 16 C.

TONIGHT will be hazy with lows 5 to 10 C.

WEDNESDAY will continue warm with sunny intervals, highs 19 to 23 C, but cooler once again near south and east coasts.

THURSDAY will bring a mixture of cloud and sunshine, isolated showers, and highs 17 to 20 C.

FRIDAY will be cloudy with a few brighter intervals mainly in Ulster and north Leinster, and highs will be near 17 C with rainfalls of 5 to 10 mm expected.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK is for partly cloudy skies both days, some scattered showers but a fair amount of dry weather too. Highs in the normal range of about 15 to 17 C.

NEXT WEEK is looking similar to the weekend for a few more days, then turning cooler later in the week in northerly breezes.

In general the weather pattern across North America is rather bland at this point with not much severe storm activity given that this is the height of the severe storm season.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK is for partly cloudy skies both days, some scattered showers but a fair amount of dry weather too. Highs in the normal range of about 15 to 17 C.

NEXT WEEK should continue roughly similar with highs 16 to 19 C, isolated showers but also some decent sunny spells, before it starts to turn cooler and more unsettled towards the end of next week.

My local weather on Tuesday was overcast, still rather warm and humid with rain setting in around mid-afternoon, only a few mms locally and highs near 18 C. Feeling cooler this evening.

Please note, I am moving house this week and it looks like no internet at forecast time so it's possible that I will not be back on line until Thursday morning (your time). We are not going a long way from the current location but it's a bit further south and also a little higher above sea level, probably means more snow in the winter and similar weather the other three seasons.

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain in western counties this morning fading by mid-day, then another pulse of showery rain moving westward from Leinster early afternoon towards the Atlantic coast by late afternoon. -- Rainfall will average about 10 to 20 mm which is near or slightly below average.

-- Sunshine will average about 4 to 5 hours a day, which is also slightly below average.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with longer sunny intervals in the south, scattered showers in parts of the north, and highs 13 to 16 C north, to about 16 to 19 C south.

TONIGHT will see clear intervals again with lows 1 to 5 C and scattered light ground frosts in north midlands.

WEDNESDAY will start out sunny to partly cloudy, turning overcast later in the day, with rain by evening in the west. Lows 1 to 5 C and highs about 17 C.

THURSDAY will bring intervals of rain (5-15 mm for some) and highs of 14 to 17 C with a gradual slow clearing trend later in the day.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers and lows near 6 C, highs near 17 C.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK (25-26 May) calls for humid, overcast to partly cloudy weather with a few showers and moderate westerly winds, lows near 8 C and highs near 17 C.

NEXT WEEK will turn a bit cooler again with occasional showers and sunny spells, and highs around 12 to 15 C.

My local weather was partly cloudy in the morning and overcast by afternoon but dry on Monday with a high near 15 C. There was a fairly intense outbreak of severe storms in Texas and Oklahoma although so far reports suggest that it avoided the major damage feared, with flooding rainfalls being the more pressing concern as 200 mm fell near Tulsa, OK. However there may have been one or two isolated destructive tornado touchdowns, difficult to say until daylight breaks in the region. This complex of storms will redevelop on Tuesday in Missouri and Arkansas.

    Forecasts for Ireland

SUMMER OUTLOOK -- Here's a brief overview of how I think the summer of 2019 might turn out. The key word is average -- most indications are that the current rather featureless and bland weather pattern will continue to be the background theme, so June and possibly July temperatures will remain quite close to average and so will rainfall, although there may be one or two places seeing quite an isolated heavy downpour at some point in that kind of scenario. Then I believe that a warmer trend will set in for August and early September which may be warmer than average and reasonably dry with the possibility of isolated heavy thunderstorm rainfalls. At this point I don't think it will be a lot different from the long-term averages but that may make for a reasonably pleasant summer.

TRENDS for the week of 22 to 28 May

-- Temperatures will average to slightly above normal. Highs will be typically around 17 C.

-- Rainfall will average about 10 to 20 mm which is near or slightly below average.

-- Sunshine will average about 4 to 5 hours a day, which is also slightly below average.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will start out partly cloudy to overcast, with best chances for sunshine near the south coast and in east Ulster where it will also be turning overcast later in the day, then rain will develop by evening in the southwest. Highs about 15 to 18 C.

TONIGHT will see patchy light rain spreading further east, 5-10 mm in some parts, and lows near 10 C.

THURSDAY will bring further intervals of rain (5-15 mm for some) and highs of 14 to 17 C with a gradual slow clearing trend later in the day as the rain fragments to isolated showers.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers and lows near 6 C, highs near 17 or 18 C.

SATURDAY will be mostly cloudy but with some sunny intervals in the south, warmer and rather humid, with showers possible in north Connacht and Ulster mainly, highs near 18 C north and 21 C inland south although cooler near west and south coasts where some persistent low cloud may linger

SUNDAY will bring cooler air and a line of showers that may contain one or two thunderstorms, a few stronger wind gusts to 60 km/hr, and highs near 17 C.

NEXT WEEK will see a slight decrease in temperatures but it should stay fairly close to average at about 14 to 16 C with a few showers on most days.

My local weather on Tuesday was mostly cloudy with a few breaks and the high was about 16 C.

    Thursday, 23 May, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of May 23 to 29, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal although warmer on the weekend, cooler after Monday.

-- Rainfall will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal.

-- Sunshine may average near normal for a few parts of the south and southwest, otherwise 50 to 75 per cent of normal.

-- It will become considerably breezier than recent days (weeks) by the weekend and this trend may continue next week.

    FORECASTS ...

TODAY will be mostly cloudy with a few breaks developing this afternoon and evening. Light rain will continue to edge east, becoming more showery later this morning and tending to die out completely during the afternoon. 2 to 7 mm amounts will be typical. Highs 15 to 18 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy with lows near 7 C.

FRIDAY will be cloudy with sunny intervals, and some isolated showers will develop from north Connacht into the midlands and south Ulster. Highs about 16 C.

SATURDAY will be rather warm with some sunny breaks despite a predominantly cloudy sky in most parts, perhaps longer sunny intervals for the inland southwest, and isolated showers in the north. It will feel quite humid compared to most of this month, and highs will reach 20 C inland.

SUNDAY will become breezy and turn cooler in stages with some heavy showers along a cold front and the risk of an isolated thunderstorm, but fresher and partly cloudy by afternoon and evening, lows only about 12 C and highs near 17 C. Winds becoming west to northwest about 50 to 70 km/hr.

MONDAY will be breezy and cooler, with frequent showers and risk of a brief thunderstorm. Highs about 14 C.

TUESDAY will be cloudy with sunny intervals, isolated showers and brisk northerly winds, quite cool for late May, highs 11 to 14 C.

The OUTLOOK beyond that is unsettled and only slightly warmer into the 14 to 16 C range.

My local weather was partly cloudy with better sunny breaks by late afternoon and evening, and a comfortable 17 C.

    Friday, 24 May, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of May 24 to 30, 2019

-- Temperatures will average slightly below normal after Saturday reaches above normal briefly, but considerably cooler readings next week will dominate the averages which may run 1 to 2 degrees below normal by the 30th.

-- Rainfall will average near normal but most of that will come towards the end of the interval, before then just 25 to 50 per cent of normal amounts can be expected.

-- Sunshine may average near normal for a few parts of the south and southwest, otherwise 50 to 75 per cent of normal.

-- It will become considerably breezier than recent days (weeks) by the weekend and this trend may continue next week.

    FORECASTS ...

TODAY will be cloudy with sunny intervals, and some isolated showers will develop from north Connacht into the midlands and south Ulster. Highs about 16 C.

TONIGHT will be rather cloudy and misty but mild with drizzle near Atlantic coasts at times, lows 9 to 12 C.

SATURDAY will be rather warm with some sunny breaks developing despite a predominantly cloudy sky in most parts, perhaps longer sunny intervals for the inland southwest, and isolated showers in the north, the outer edges of some heavier rain pushing across western Scotland.

About 5 mm of rain will fall on average, some places could get closer to 10 mm but it won't be raining for long intervals, just short, sharp bursts followed by clearing.

MONDAY will be breezy and cooler, with frequent showers and risk of a brief thunderstorm. Lows near 7 C and highs about 14 C.

TUESDAY will be cloudy with sunny intervals, isolated showers and brisk northerly winds, quite cool for late May, lows near 5 C and highs 11 to 14 C.

WEDNESDAY will continue cool and dry with lows 2 to 5 C and highs 11 to 16 C.

The OUTLOOK beyond that is unsettled and only slightly warmer into the 14 to 16 C range with the risk of heavier rainfalls at times towards the end of the month. The first ten days of June are looking generally cool but frequently dry once the brief wetter interval at end of this month closes out by about 2nd of June. Typical highs then may be a few degrees below seasonal averages, or around 16 C rather than 18 to 20 which is the normal range.

My local weather was bright despite a lot of higher cloud most of the day, and a bit warmer with highs near 20 C.

    Saturday, 25 May, 2019

    Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 25 to 31 May 2019 ...

-- Temperatures will be near average with somewhat cooler than normal readings in the first half of next week.

-- Rainfall will average near normal amounts in the north but will continue below normal in some parts of the south. Most of the rainfall counting towards this total will be around Wednesday and Thursday after some smaller amounts on Sunday and Monday.

-- Sunshine will probably average a bit below normal (which is about six hours a day).

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy with some mid-day and afternoon sunny breaks mostly in the midlands. It will feel quite humid and highs could reach 20 or 21 C inland, but 18 C around Dublin and 16 C near west coast where low cloud and spotty drizzle may linger.

TONIGHT will see frequent light rain showers and possibly a brief thundershower, with lows around 12 C.

SUNDAY will have clearing skies during the late morning then a partly cloudy and fresher afternoon with scattered showers, winds increasing to westerly 40 to 60 km/hr, and highs near 17 C.

MONDAY will be cloudy with a few breaks, and frequent showers, some rather heavy with hail and thunder. Lows near 7 C and highs near 15.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy and cool with lows near 5 C and highs near 14 C.

WEDNESDAY will become overcast after a clear but cool start, then rain will sweep in although perhaps rather showery in the far south. Highs will be about 15 C.

OUTLOOK is rather uncertain, guidance has been wavering between cooler weather returning, or a continuation of the mid-week frontal zone weather with more showers and near average temperatures. Early June is starting to look a bit warmer again with fairly pleasant conditions most days and temperatures at least near normal if not slightly above at times.

My local weather was overcast, muggy and showery with a few heavier bursts of rain and one or two rumbles of distant thunder. The radar was showing activity all over the region moving from east to west around a broad low pressure area in southern Washington state and central Idaho. This is going to keep pumping moisture our way and so we're looking at a fairly wet weekend here (near the U.S.-Canada border in southern B.C.).

-- Sunshine will be challenged to reach even half of normal and will have to do most of that after about Thursday (today may help a bit).

    FORECASTS

TODAY will see the last of the cloud and showers from the passing front rapidly moving away to be followed by partly cloudy and breezy weather with perhaps a few more showers developing, these mainly in the northwest. Highs 15 to 18 C, winds west to northwest 40-60 km/hr.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast with occasional light rain and diminishing westerly breezes, lows near 8 C.

MONDAY will be cloudy with occasional rain and risk of heavier showers with thunder or hail in a few spots. Cooler with highs only about 14 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy, mostly dry with isolated showers, and cool, lows near 4 C and highs near 15 C.

WEDNESDAY will start out clear and chilly with morning lows 2 to 5 C, then increasing cloud will lead to rain, highs near 15 C.

THURSDAY will see further rain tapering to showers, then gradual clearing, lows near 9 C and highs near 15 C.

FRIDAY and the WEEKEND are now looking improved with sunshine at times each day and relatively warm highs near 20 or 21 C.

The first part of June looks similar although with a few weak frontal systems bringing brief showery intervals, but the dominant theme will be dry and reasonably warm at times.

My local weather on Saturday was overcast with occasional light rain, highs about 16 C.

SUNDAY will be partly to mostly cloudy with showers, cooler with moderate southwest to west winds, highs near 16 C.

OUTLOOK ... Cooler with showers first part of next week, highs 13 to 16 C, then somewhat warmer but mostly cloudy with risk of some heavier rain developing, highs 15 to 19 C.

My local weather on a travel day Wednesday started out cloudy at the coast, became mostly sunny about halfway back to home base then cloudy again by evening arriving home. Where it was clear we could see tops of rather weak thundershowers that were trying to form over higher terrain but they weren't producing much if any rain or lightning. It was very warm and muggy most of the way too, around 25 C at peak.

We are closing in on the tenth anniversary of this forecast thread (31st of May 2009, I had this idea .... that people (cough cough) would like to make forecasts on the weather forum. It turned into this and I've enjoyed it a lot.
