Mercedes W124 estate- I need a new one

I've posted this in the "normal" Motors forum also, but this one seems appropriate also, mods feel free to delete if you think it breaks any rules?

I need a Mercedes E Class estate ideally from '93 to '96, the W124 chassis, a petrol automatic of no more than 2.3 litres. If anyone knows of a good one please let me know, my current one was involved in a crash today and is likely to be written off

Nobody hurt but I like the car and want another.

Thanks Dermo, I've already seen that one and while it looks ok in the ad it's not one I'd buy, for many many reasons! I've checked all that I can find on Donedeal and Adverts and nothing suitable is listed.

Thanks for that, I did see that ad and it does look very nice indeed but its way more than I'm willing to pay :eek: I don't believe its necessary to spend that much to get a good one, albeit not a 4matic version.

I would have to say a trip to the UK is the way to go. You'll get a much better looked after car with much higher spec, and a better variety.
While we may think of the w124 is an icon - unfortunately a lot of the Irish ones were simply a cheap reliable wagon that got turned into POS's.

edit : tin worm will be an issue with UK ones, but there seems to be a few good clean ones out there.

sorry to hear about your crash quenching, good thing as you say is that no-one was hurt, but a shame that you reckon the car is probably a w/o.
I've been thinking of replacing my W123 with a either a 124 wagon or saloon, and just curious about Brian Crowley's cars (as posted by Dermo123) - he seems to specialise in older Mercs. I haven't heard anything of him, or his stock, anything you can add would be appreciated

Sorry to hear about the estate quenching. Best of all, you are OK, thats the main one, the car did its job....! If I hear of something I'll certainly let you know. Gumtree "belfast" might help you cast the net a bit farther.

I know it's in the Shed of the Week section (hardly complimentary

), but this UK S124 might be worth considering. At £1k asking with 7 seats you can hardly sneeze at it.

Thanks G, always helps to have extra eyes and ears out there, I'd forgotten about Gumtree, I never really look there for some reason but will start this evening. When its replacement is found no doubt you'll see it parked outside your window!

Oddly enough I saw that one a few weeks ago when looking for a "spare", it's not nearly as tidy as it looks in the photos I'm afraid, nothing major but needs too much spending on it and had a fluctuating idle that could be just a split hose or something much more expensive. I passed at the time but may take another look now that I'm more incentivised to buy

I have to agree, practically all the Irish ones I've seen aren't fit to keep hens in!

It'll be a few days before I know what the insurance company have to say but the garage its at say its almost certainly an economic write-off, it'll then depend of whether it's worth fixing using used panels etc.

I feel OP's pain - I used to like the odd "waft" in me beloved W123 until the tin worms ate the floor.

One of these if you're unsure of the model:would you not just fix your car you it a good car . how bad can it be but your money back in to it or see what prestige classic cars have . they all ways have not bad mercs

Keep an eye out here for a nice model coming up for sale.

I had a 94W124T in green about 4 years ago. If i was going to go for one again i would wait on a Silver with black leather and 5speed auto.

build quality for a start i'd say, less electrics to go wrong, more liable to rust (though i think the early W210s didn't suffer that badly).
Having said that, i've always liked the look of the W210, and think the estate at least looks the part of a proper E class, which i think was lost with the subsequent model

This guy knows how to charge though--wont get much change out of 5k with him!

Sorry for the tread hijack,but would any of yous merc peops know where i would locate a 2nd front shock for a 1995 S280,,,,all speurious new ones i can locate are a flimsy piece of you know what,and cant justify a new genuine one as the car is going to be leying up for the foreseable future,,,,so if anyone knows of anything been broken/parted would appriciate it thanks,,,

You're better off posting that in the for sale / wanted sticky. That's what it's for and then there would be no need for thread hijacking...

I don't think so the W210 was no way as bullet proof as the w124.

the w210 isnt a patch on the w124 - if going for a uk car just keep on searching autotrader for a private car or one for sale at a general used car dealer -the cars at uk mb specialists like w124.co.uk, charles ironside , autobarn etc. are just way overpriced even the average mileage ones. You can sometimes see cars here for sale at even less than uk prices

He looks to source the really good ones particularly the rare 5 speed autos.

I had five S124 Estates in the past and I loved them to bits (there is no need to say why, as we know exactly why we like them

). My second last one was a very nice, rust free and original E220T, owned previously by an eldery gentlemen living one mile from our place. This one was the very nicest car to drive of them all - 175k miles on the clock and it felt as fresh as a new car, you would feel the difference straight away after driving any other S124. The car was mainly driven on motorways in France, where the previous owner has his second house. I finally sold the car to a man in Dublin, approximately one year ago. I will text him and ask if he still owns the car and if he is interested in selling it, as it would be a very good example to buy (if the car has been looked after the way I did it, obviously).

I will email you if the car is available and good luck with your research in the mean time
