I have been living in Ireland now 13 years and feel it is time to educate myself in more detail about the country.

My motivation is the arrival of my newborn baby and I want to be able engage with her about her home country.

I am looking for general history book recommendations in subject areas such as politics, GAA, Irish independence, art / culture and so on.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

There is an author called Tim Pat Coogan, his book The Troubles is quiet good, he has many others on Michale Collins, The Famine, The GAA etc, not really my cup of tea but good reviews on all , by all accounts... good place to start.

Personally with my kids I think any Irish folk lore books have a larger impact, ireland is steeped in folklore and legends ... the stores are still great, for grown ups and kids alike, a lot are still covered in school and every Irish child needs should know about Cuchulainn and The Children if Lir etc

    Best of luck
