400 on street electric cars for Dublin

    New car sharing company setting up this year in Dublin to compete with Go Car. They will have an all electric fleet. Main selling point over Go Car is that you'll be able to drive A to B rather than having to return the car to the pick up point.
    Danish car-sharing company Green Mobility is to set up a scheme in Dublin this year with a fleet of 400 electric cars.

    Competing with GoCar, owned by Europcar, and Yuko, a car-sharing club owned by Toyota Ireland, the Danish company says that unlike its rivals users don’t have to return cars to designated parking locations. It also offers only fully electric vehicles on its fleet.

    According to Anders Wall, the company’s chief international officer: “Within the operational zone – say within the city limits – the cars can be parked anywhere that is legal. You don’t have to return them to a station or designated location like you do with GoCar. Our service is literally door-to-door and not just A to B.

    “Our users pay for the time they spend in the car. So when you park the car legally on the street or in certain car parks, we take care of the parking charges. We also don’t charge any fixed fees, membership or sign-up fees. You only pay for the number of minutes you use the car.

    “The car is opened and locked through our app on smartphones – Apple or Android. There are no keys in the car so you simply drive to where you need to go. Once you end the trip, you lock it again with the app and the car becomes visible to all the other users. When the charge in a car drops below 10 per cent the cars automatically disappear from the app. We have a team of street agents who take care of charging, cleaning and maintenance of the electric car.”

    Sounds like great news. The disadvantage of Go Car has always been that you had to pay while the car was sitting up unused and having return it to its base. This new model will work a lot better for more people imo.

    Sounds like great news. The disadvantage of Go Car has always been that you had to pay while the car was sitting up unused and having return it to its base. This new model will work a lot better for more people imo.

    I do hope they come up with a good solution regarding charging.There aren't many chargers in the city centre and all too often they're blocked by Go Car.

    At last...city badly needs this type of service...daughter is in Vancouver and the Eco Car service there is similar to this..bleeperbike of cars...and it's fab.
    We live near city centre..could be persuaded to get rid if our car...

    Good point. Without expanding the charging infrastructure 400 new EVs on the city streets will make things worse in the short term. I'd imagine Green Mobility and Go Car will then be lobbying government to finally get on with installing more charging points, especially if their cars are parked up up dead because chargers are all being used. So it should speed up the delivery of additional charging infrastructure but as usual in Ireland it will be a matter of putting the cart before the horse before anything is done about it.

    looking at the pricing in Denmark, it's a lot more expensive than GoCar. Also I assume the drop off points are only within a restricted area, so if you're going for any sort of longer journey you'll still be paying for it while it's parked.

    You should just hire a car on a daily rate for a long journey. These cars are specifically for short trips, much like Dublin Bikes, if everyone takes them and heads off down the country it defeats the purpose of having the service at all.

    You'd imagine their zone for pick up/drop off would be anywhere inside the M50 ring. They're starting with 400 cars which is a fair chunk to begin with on day one, Go Car has a fleet of around 400 in Dublin which has taken them several years to build.

    I wonder what Go Car are planning. If they don't adapt to compete with the A to B model they will lose market share pretty quick.
