Just a reminder that The Suitcase - an Opera will play in Belfast's Crescent Arts Centre on Saturday, February 19th 2011 (+44 (028) 90 242338), 7pm, £5. Chicago Opera Vanguard will present sections and arias from their latest work, in collaboration with local artists.

As part of their Belfast residency, COV will offer “Devising Opera”, a two-session (3 hours each) daytime workshop on February 15 & 16 that will explore finding the theatrical, physical, and musical impetus behind found and devised texts.

Composer Eric Reda, Director Karen Yates and Writer/Performer David Kodeski will guide participants through a series of physical and vocal exercises aimed toward creating miniature operatic moments that will culminate in a daytime public presentation.

Participants will be required to research and then bring factual texts to the workshop that illustrate current policies (political and civic), news stories about gay issues, and views on homosexuality in Belfast and Northern Ireland as a whole. This focus complements the subject matter of The Suitcase - an Opera, which concerns a young gay man in New York City in 1950.

Those interested in participating must be comfortable with singing, rhythm, and music. They must be in good physical shape and be willing to improvise shamelessly.

If interested, please submit a statement of interest to suitcaseworkshop@gmail.com with DEVISING OPERA as the subject heading by 31st January. You will be notified within a week if you have been selected.

Places on “Devising Opera” are limited. A £10 fee is required to secure your place on the workshop.

    Silk-Road-poster-Final.jpg

Some of the most striking voices in today’s classical composition are not coming out of the West but from far-flung outposts on the other side of the world. Such a voice is that of Dmitri Yanov Yanovsky. Chicago Tribune 2010

A new series of contemporary music and arts events, ‘Sounds of the Silk Road organised by the Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS), will be launched this April as part of the Drogheda Arts Festival.

The first performance of the series will feature work specially commissioned by the LCMS by Dmitri Yanov Yanovsky a composer from Uzbekistan a country at the cross-roads of the rich oriental and Islamic traditions of Central Asia. The work has been has written for world renowned Hilliard ensemble, Ivan Monighetti one of the world’s most accomplished cellists who stunned audiences with his performance at the Drogheda Arts Festival 2010 and of the foremost Irish musicians in the newly formed EQ Ensemble which includes Cliona Doris, harp, Malachy Robinson, bass, Elizabeth Cooney, violin, Cian O'Duill, viola, Maria McGarry, piano, Deirdre O'Leary, clarinet, Susan Doyle, flute, Chris Stynes and Maeve O'Hara, percussion.

The concert will take place in St Peter’s Church of Ireland Drogheda on the 29 April 2011 at 8pm.

This is the first time the Hilliard ensemble, have been involved with an Irish based commission and it is also Dmitri's first Irish commission. Dimitri Yanov-Yanovsky was born in 1963 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. As the musicologist Gerard McBurney says “His remarkable surroundings are vividly reflected in his music. What is most impressive is the skill with which he weaves the colourful threads of contradictory influences into a musical fabric always refined, beautifully patterned and absolutely personal”

The piece ‘Morning’ based on text from Robert Lax's poem ‘Morning’, from his book called Circus of the Sun described by the New York Times as one of the masterpieces of the 20th century. Lax was also a friend of the writer, monk and mystic Thomas Merton.
The performance will also include another of Dmitri's works called Nightmusic - Voices in the Leaves which was written for Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble.

World renowned Lydia Kavina will open the concert with a contemporary piece called Kitezh 19. Lydia plays music on a theremin, an electronic instrument which makes music without touching. Lydia has become an icon for performances with the Theramin and will be giving a workshop on the instrument for both beginners and advanced players whilst she is in Ireland.

The concert and events are the latest of several high profile art music events organised by the Louth Contemporary Music Society which have brought world renowned composers to Ireland, previously having successfully featured, Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Valentyn Silvestov and to the 2010 Drogheda Arts Festival, the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina.

The Sirin Choir from Moscow Russia sing church chants and spiritual verses in SIRIN CHOIR from Moscow Russia in St. Nicholas Church (The Green Church) Dundalk on 5 May 2011
… beautiful to hear and deeply affecting. (Irish Examiner, Ireland)
    SirinChoirweb.jpg

The amazing Sirin Choir from Russia will perform in St.Nicholas Church ( generally known as the Green Church) Dundalk on 5 May 2011. The programme will include modern day choral masterpieces such as Louth Contemporary Music Society Commissions Arvo Pärt’s The Deer’s Cry and John Tavener’s O My People along with a selection of Church Chants and Spiritual verses from the 15th and 16th centuries and a contemporary work by Ivan Moody. Some of the Church Chants will be performed a cappella with a selection of the spiritual verses accompanied by hurdy-gurdy, psaltery or violin. There will also be a choral workshop in Orthodox Chant given by Ivan Moody.

Sirin Choir was formed in 1989 by a group of professional musicians who took the name after a bird of Paradise from Russian Christian legends. Before that Andrey Kotov, Sirin’s Artistic Director spent many years studying Russian sacred folklore in rural settings where these ancient traditions are still preserved. His research has meant that Sirin is uniquely able to present repertoire ranging from the dark, sonorous style of Old Believers’ church to the haunting songs of spiritual wanderers.

The ensemble has presented its interpretation of Russian church and spiritual folk music on extensive concert tours in Russia and Europe and was multifold prizewinner of renowned choral competitions. Sirin took part in the 1st European Symposium for Choral Music in Ljubliana, World Symposium for Choral Music in Rotterdam, gave performances at various festivals, like the festival in Thoronet and the festival of Old Lyon (France), Musica Sacra in Marktoberdorf (Germany), Old Music in Jaroslaw (Poland), Musica Sacra in Maastricht ( Holland), Trialogos (Estonia), Isle de France , Lufthansa Baroque Festival (Great Britain), Cork International Choral festival (Ireland), Sacred Music in Fribourg (Switzerland), Festival of Sacred Music in Fez, Bangkok Christmas Festival (Thailand), Europalia (Belgium) and many others. Sirin's performances were included in the program for celebrating 2000 years of christianity in Jerusalem.

As a special request of Sirin, the Russian composer Vladimir Martynov set texts from the Old Testament's book The Lamentation of Jeremiah to music. The stage version of The Lamentation of Jeremiah, where all roles are performed by Sirin members, had more than 150 performances in Russia, France (as part of the official program of Avignon Theatre Festival), Italy, Germany, Estonia and Sweden. It was awarded with Golden Mask, the highest distinction in Russian theatre, as the best theatrical production of the year.

The composer and conductor Ivan Moody will provide a choral workshop on Orthodox chant. This workshop will introduce a number of strands of the rich and diverse traditions of Orthodox church music, including various kinds of monophonic chant (including Greek and Russian) and polyphonic choral music from such countries as Russia and Serbia. The music included will be presented as part of an open discussion of its history and context.

…consummate vocal skills and absolute professionalism. This choir deserves the mark “excellent and higher”. (Compact, Spain)

…the genuine feeling carried in the group’s performance stirred profound emotions… offering clear lessons to those who fancy the worldwide supremacy of the English choral tradition (The Independent, UK)

…beauty of this singing resembles the singing of seraphim (Esslingen Zeitung, Germany)

…Immediate shock from the first sounds… After listening to the recording you have only one wish: to hear this rare repertoire at a concert, to have direct contact with these superb and exciting voices. (Diapason, France)

    Jane O’Leary and Linda Buckley.

The Dublin Bach Singers, an excellent chamber choir I have heard on a number of occasions, have invited Hans-Joachim Rotzsch to conduct their next concert. He was the Kantor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig for around 20 years, the 15th successor of Bach in that job. There are quite a few clips of him singing (he was originally a tenor) and conducting on Youtube.

The program consists of works by Bach (naturally) Brahms and Mendelssohn. The concert will take place at the Pro-Cathedral, just off O'Connell Street, at 8pm on Sunday November 13th. I think this is a rare opportunity to hear a very good choir conducted by a unique conductor.

In its first visit to Waterford, the internationally acclaimed and multi-award-winning chamber choir New Dublin Voices and its conductor Bernie Sherlock explore a Tale of Two Masses written almost 500 hundred years apart: the sublime Missa Aeterna Christi Munera by Palestrina, and the prophetic and unconventional Missa Tiburtina by Giles Swayne.

Fresh from its clean sweep of 6 awards at the 11th International Choir Contest of Flanders-Maasmechelen in Belgium (including Choir of the Festival and Best Contemporary Work), NDV will also pay tribute to Waterford-based composer, Ben Hanlon, who has written two works in the last two years for the choir. New Dublin Voices will also perform a selection of other sacred pieces including Beati Quorum Via by Stanford and Z. Randall Stroope’s The Conversion of Saul, his graphic and electrifying depiction of Paul’s experience on the road to Damascus.

Christ Church Cathedral, Waterford, Saturday November 5th, 8pm

This programme will be repeated in Dublin in St. Ann’s Church Dawson St., on Friday November 11th at 8pm.

NEW DUBLIN VOICES: HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

Fresh from sweeping all six available prizes at Flanders-Maasmechelen, Belgium's elite international choral competition, New Dublin Voices now brings all its energy and colour to the music of Christmas.

Also winners of last year's Lyric fm Choirs for Christmas competition, New Dublin Voices and its conductor Bernie Sherlock honour the spirit and tradition of Christmas with a beautiful selection of carols and songs – lively and quick, or deep and contemplative, very ancient and very new, old favourites, new sounds. There will be the world premieres of new carols by Irish composers Stephen Gardner and Jonathan Nangle, and the centerpiece is Benjamin Britten's moving and sublime A Ceremony of Carols.

New Dublin Voices is home for Christmas, performing in three different Dublin venues beginning December 9th in the National Concert Hall's John Field Room, and continuing on December 14th in Christ Church Cathedral. Music will be interspersed with seasonal readings, and the Saturday Family Matinée – the earlier of two concerts in Draíocht on December 17th – will feature a few surprises for kids (of all ages!).

The music of composer Seán Ó Riada, who is credited with re-igniting the popularity of Irish traditional music, is celebrated by Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) in a unique performance of a new arrangement of his Mass on 10 March 2012 in Dundalk.

The new arrangement was completed by Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, a composer of international fame. A native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, he most recently has been a composer-in-residence at Harvard University and Dartmouth College. Yanov-Yanovsky has received commissions from celebrated musicians including the renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Kronos Quartet and Hilliard Ensemble. Yanov-Yanovsky’s music was first performed in Ireland at LCMS’s Sounds of the Silk Road Concert at Drogheda Arts Festival in 2011. Yanov-Yanovsky has arranged the mass for 16 voices, fiddle, harp and bodhrán.

The mass will be performed by the finest Irish professional singers in the newly formed EQ Singers, with Zoe Conway on fiddle, Laoise Kelly on harp and Mel Mercier on bodhrán. The choir and players will be conducted by Eamonn Dougan Associate Conductor of internationally renowned ensemble The Sixteen. The performance will take place in St. Nicholas’ Church of Ireland (The Green Church), Dundalk Co. Louth at 8pm on Saturday 10 March 2012.

Presenting Kirkos, Dublin’s newest contemporary-music ensemble:

Kirkos Ensemble is a dynamic new contemporary-music ensemble founded by students of the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Kirkos is generously supported by the RIAM, but is run entirely (both artistically and administratively) by students, making it the RIAM’s only student-run ensemble.

Dublin is lucky enough to possess a new-music scene which punches well above its weight internationally, but what is missing here is the opportunity for young people to be involved in the music of today. Kirkos Ensemble has a mission to promote the performance of contemporary music by the country’s best young performers, and to provide a platform for young composers to have their works performed well. What makes Kirkos unique is our access to the RIAM’s pool of Ireland’s top emerging performers.

Kirkos Ensemble’s launch concert will be on 17th April at 8pm in St Ann's Church, Dawson Street. They will be performing works by students, teachers and alumni of the RIAM. Admission will be free and the concert will include seven world premieres, an Irish premiere and prize-winning composers and performers in a programme showcasing the huge variety in the output of the RIAM's composers. The concert will feature works by: Sebastian Adams, Breffni O'Byrne, Robert Coleman, Edgar Grunewald, Nori Krupp, Bill McGrath, Fergal Mulloy, Jonathan Nangle, Kevin O'Connell and Emma O'Halloran.

Louth Contemporary Music Society in association with Drogheda Arts Festival
    presents Arabian Waltz with
Rabih Abou Khalil , the EQ Ensemble and Elisaveta Blumina
in St.Peter’s Church of Ireland Drogheda
    4 May 2012 at 8pm.

The shrewd, witty and inventive Abou Khalil - a world musician years before the phrase became a label -makes the hot, staccato Middle Eastern flavour and the seamless grooves of jazz mingle as if they were always meant to. John Fordham The Guardian

For nearly a quarter century, Lebanese-born oud master and composer Rabih Abou-Khalil has defied all of the artificial boundaries to create a musical world entirely his own. With his first Irish commission for Louth Contemporary Music Society, Rabih once again proves to be a truly visionary artist.

The concert will feature a magical programme of music ranging from Elisaveta Blumina performing piano works by Fazil Say and Alan Hovhaness to The EQ Ensemble performing John Surman’s Mimosa and Leylek Geldi for string quartet and bass. Rabih will perform solo on the oud and then will be joined by the EQ Ensemble for the world premiere of a new commission for string quartet, bass and oud. The new commission, funded by the Arts Council, will receive its world premiere on 4 May 2012 as part of the Drogheda Arts Festival.

Born and raised in the cosmopolitan climate of Beirut in the sixties and seventies, Rabih Abou-Khalil leaned to play the oud at the age of four. In the Arab world, this instrument is as popular as the guitar or the piano in the West and is the composer's instrument par excellence. An oud is a form of lute or mandolin played principally in Arab countries. The Lebanese civil war forced him to leave his country in 1978 to study classical flute in the German city of Munich, where he was tutored at the Munich Academy of Music by Walther Theurer.

    Tickets for the concert cost €10 and are available from www.ctb.ie ( 0818 205 205)or the festival box office 353 (0)41 983 3946 or at www.droghedaartsfestival.ie.
LCMS will hold a wine reception at the interval for all ticket holders.

Rabih Abou Khalil’s first Irish commission was funded by the Arts Council of Ireland.
The Arabian Waltz concert is funded by Create Louth and the Arts Council. Louth Contemporary Music Society is supported by the Arts Council.

The Drogheda Arts Festival, the first festival of the summer, will run from 3rd – 7th May with new theatre, music, family events, visual arts and lots more.

    Carmina Burana
    The Culwick Choral Society
    National Concert Hall
    Sunday, May 20, 8pm

Earthy tales of life, love, and lust – the Culwick presents Carl Orff’s immensely popular Carmina Burana – 130 voices singing words written centuries ago but still sounding fresh, spicy and real today in Orff's percussive and energetic setting.

The soloists are the outstanding Irish soprano Cara O'Sullivan with baritone Owen Gilhooley -- “scene-stealing” (Irish Times) as Papageno in OTC’s recent Magic Flute) --and rising young tenor Brian Gilligan. The part for children’s choir is sung by the multi-award-winning St. Brigid’s NS Choir from Castleknock under conductor Niamh Williams.

The concert begins with Bartók’s enchanting Hungarian Pictures, a suite of delightful and humorous snapshots of Hungarian peasant life. This is followed by Kodály’s Missa Brevis, a masterpiece which he completed while in hiding from German forces in the cellars of the Budapest Opera House in 1944. For this the choir is joined by alto Chloe Hinton and organist David Leigh.
