Forecasts for Ireland


TRENDS for the week of 23 to 29 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 1.5 to 3.5 deg above normal, with a gradual cooling trend from very warm at first to near normal by end.
-- Rainfall will average near normal, from 50% above in some parts of west, to about half normal values on the east coast.
-- Sunshine will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal.

FORECASTS

TODAY will be very warm and humid with some hazy sunshine at times, more frequent cloud cover near south and west coasts, and highs generally around 25 C except closer to 20 near south coast, 22 west coast. Winds southerly 40 to 60 km/hr, backing to southeast by late in the day.

TONIGHT will see a band of showers making some progress east from the Atlantic coastal counties to at least central Ulster and the midlands, but amounts rather light in general. Very warm and muggy for most with lows around 17 C.

WEDNESDAY will bring some sunny breaks after the remnants of overnight showers move east, and it will continue quite warm at about 23 or 24 C.

THURSDAY will be wet in some western counties with 15-30 mm rainfall expected, some thundery showers embedded. This band of rain may stall before reaching the east coast, or at least make such slow progress as to delay its arrival until evening. Thus temperatures will vary from about 17 C in the west to 22 C in the east after another quite warm and muggy night.

FRIDAY will see the front speeding up but fragmenting to showers, followed by partial clearing and highs near 19 C.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK calls for near normal temperatures and scattered showers, highs near 20 C.

My local weather on Monday was partly cloudy and rather warm (25 C) with some weak shower and thunderstorm activity mostly aloft with the rain not reaching the ground very often. This is the opening stages of what looks like a severe storm outbreak mostly north of here and spreading east, but we may get into the action at times on Tuesday. Heat was replaced by heavy rainfalls in many parts of the eastern U.S. on Monday.

TRENDS for the week of 25 to 31 July, 2019

-- Temperatures will average about 0.5 degrees above normal.
-- Rainfall will average near normal in many areas, but possibly as low as 50% of normal in coastal Leinster and east Ulster.
-- Sunshine will average 60 to 80 per cent of normal values.

FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain, slowly spreading east although only scattered showers will reach Leinster and parts of Ulster by afternoon. Further amounts will be 5 to 10 mm in Kerry, some parts of Galway and Mayo, but less than that in central counties. Still rather warm with highs close to 20 C and possibly 23 to 25 C in Leinster.

TONIGHT will remain cloudy with some rain at times, lows near 12 C.

FRIDAY will become fresher with westerly winds of 40 to 60 km/hr at times, passing showers and chance of an isolated thunderstorm. Highs will range from 17 to 21 C.

SATURDAY will also be partly cloudy with showers and moderate westerly winds at times, lows near 9 C and highs near 17 C.

SUNDAY will become partly sunny and showers will be quite isolated, highs near 20 C.

MONDAY will bring outbreaks of rain with highs near 19 C.

The outlook for the rest of the week is rather unsettled with temperatures close to seasonal averages.

My local weather started off with a heavy thunderstorm, then it cleared up before mid-day and was quite a bit cooler than the previous days with a high of about 18 C. Severe storms moved east into Alberta and Saskatchewan.

TRENDS for the week of 27 July to 2 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average just slightly above normal, 0.5 to 1.5 deg in most areas, which suggests daytime readings in the low 20s.
-- Rainfall will average just about normal although a fair amount of that is timed for the last day of the interval, so rather dry until then.
-- Sunshine will average near normal to 25% above normal values. The northwest will do relatively well being furthest from projected tracks of any cloud systems.

FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny with afternoon cloudy intervals, and isolated showers mostly over west-central counties. Highs 20 to 23 C.

TONIGHT will have clear intervals except for widespread cloud in east Ulster and north Leinster. Lows 7 to 10 C.

SUNDAY will remain cloudy in east Ulster and north Leinster, with small amounts of rain likely towards Antrim, but most other parts of Ireland will be partly cloudy to sunny at times, with only a few isolated brief showers. Highs 20 to 23 C.

MONDAY will see patchy cloud spreading in as a fairly vigorous low (for midsummer at least) tracks south of Munster towards southwest England. Some rain may develop in the south towards late afternoon or evening. Lows near 8 C and highs near 21 C.

TUESDAY could produce some light rain at times especially in Leinster and east Munster, with a better chance of sunshine in Connacht and Ulster. Highs near 19 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY look dry and reasonably warm with highs 21 to 24 C.

FRIDAY could produce some rain from the guidance this far in advance, and highs near 19 C.

The pattern in August appears rather unsettled with near normal temperatures. I have somewhat low confidence in the guidance past midweek however.

My local weather on Friday stayed sunny but turned quite hot with the high 32 C. Looks as though we are finally getting into the normal hot, dry interval that occurs most years here in late July and most of August, sometimes longer than that.

TRENDS for the week of 29 July to 4 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal values, within 0.5 deg either side.
-- Rainfall will vary from 75% of normal in the northwest to 125% of normal in the southeast.
-- Sunshine will be fairly close to average values although rather cloudy for the first two days.

FORECASTS

TODAY will have some sunny intervals this morning despite rather widespread cloud, as the persistent rain in north Ulster continues to weaken. Isolated showers are possible further south, but it will remain generally dry until late afternoon when some rain moves in from the south coast, associated with unusually deep low pressure over the Bay of Biscay. Winds will pick up gradually from the northeast in Munster and south Leinster, at least in exposed coastal locations. Highs 17 to 21 C.

TONIGHT the rain will spread further north, although rather showery with slight chance of thunderstorms embedded. Parts of the west and north will remain dry but cloudy. Lows 10 to 13 C. Rainfalls 5-10 mm inland southeast as the low tracks towards Cornwall bringing strong wind gusts to parts of northwest France and southwest England late tonight.

TUESDAY will continue showery in Leinster and east Ulster, possibly parts of Munster and Connacht adjacent to those regions also. There is a better chance of sunny intervals near the western coasts. Moderate northerly winds will develop as the low tracks through England where some locally heavy rains may develop. In eastern Ireland 15 to 25 mm rain could fall during the day. It will be rather cool as a result of the cloud and rain, highs near 16 C east, but closer to 21 C near the west coast and in parts of Ulster.

WEDNESDAY will probably see the effects of the low confined to Britain but some spillover into eastern counties is possible at times. Otherwise most places should have a dry day with a mixture of cloud and sunshine, highs near 21 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with morning lows 5 to 8 C in the inland west, 8 to 11 C in other locations, and highs 20 to 23 C.

The outlook beyond that is for rather bland weather to continue with temperatures quite close to average, possibly dropping down a few degrees by middle of the following week, then returning to normal values after that. At the moment the guidance is generally rather dry for Ireland but as confidence is rather low in the solutions, this is far from guaranteed at this point.

My local weather on Sunday was sunny and warm with highs near 27 C.

TRENDS for the week of 31 July to 6 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will be near normal to 1.0 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will be fairly light in the east until near the end of the seven day interval, but will gradually surpass normal values in the west.
-- Sunshine will average near normal to 25% above normal.

FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly to mostly cloudy this morning, becoming more sunny by afternoon in the west at least. Isolated light showers will bring scattered trace to 2 mm amounts but quite a few places should be dry in general. Highs 17 to 20 C. Moderate northwest winds 30 to 50 km/hr.

TONIGHT will become clear with a few cloudy intervals, a good night for stargazing as we are at the new moon (so no light from the Moon to interfere). Have a look for Jupiter low in the south, very bright. Lows 8 to 12 C.

THURSDAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals and a little warmer, highs 20 to 23 C.

FRIDAY will have sunshine to start with increasing cloud, lows 8 to 11 C and highs 20 to 23 C.

SATURDAY will become rather unsettled with frequent showers in the west, mostly cloudy with more isolated showers in the east. Lows will be about 10 C and highs about 19 C.

SUNDAY will be cloudy with a few showers, and highs near 19 C.

MONDAY and TUESDAY could bring some rather heavy rain at times, stay tuned on the details but potential for 20-40 mm rainfalls especially in Munster and Connacht. Guidance remains rather unsettled through the first half of August, but temperatures should be generally near the August average.

My local weather has finally gone into a persistent hot, dry pattern which we expect here for a few weeks at least. High today was around 30 in the hills and 35 in valleys. It's a dry heat here though, very little humidity. A bit hazy due to wildfire smoke blowing in from west and southwest of here (mostly in Washington state).

TRENDS for the week of 2 to 8 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average 0.5 to 1.5 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will be 50% above normal in the west, but near normal or possibly a bit below normal in the east.
-- Sunshine will average about 75% to 100% of normal, and since today will be well above that, the rest of the seven-day interval will become rather cloudy in general.

FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny with increasing cloud by afternoon in parts of the west and north, isolated showers will be possible there. Highs generally around 23 C but could be a bit warmer in some inland areas.

TONIGHT will become overcast with showers more widespread in western counties, lows near 13 C.

SATURDAY will be mostly cloudy with frequent showers in the west, occasional showers further east, and a risk of thunderstorms especially in parts of the southwest. Highs will be 18 to 21 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with showers and a risk of a thunderstorm, lows near 12 C and highs near 19 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy with showers, and highs near 19 C.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY will continue unsettled and it will be somewhat cooler by mid-week.

The outlook is for a warming trend to develop later in the week, followed by more outbreaks of rain by about the weekend of 10th-11th.

My local weather continues hot and dry with the high on Thursday around 32 C.

TRENDS for week of 4 to 10 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal to about 1 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will average 25 to 50 per cent above normal.
-- Sunshine will average only 50 to 75 per cent of normal.


FORECASTS


TODAY will start out with some sunny intervals but cloud will be increasing from the west during the morning, leading to outbreaks of heavy thundery showers mainly west of the Shannon and in parts of west Munster, but eventually spreading somewhat further east. Some places could receive 15-25 mm of rain within a short period leading to some spot flooding. Highs will be 18 to 21 C.

TONIGHT will continue cloudy with showers, lows near 12 C.

MONDAY will have variable cloudiness and outbreaks of rain also with slight chance of thunder, highs 18 to 21 C.

TUESDAY will continue much the same with partly cloudy to overcast skies, showers and highs near 19 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY will be slightly cooler but still unsettled with showers mostly in the afternoon hours, highs near 17 C.

The outlook is somewhat uncertain as to timing but a heavy rainfall seems likely around Friday or Saturday, with unusually strong low pressure for this time of year tracking near the south coast by end of the week or start of the following weekend. This unsettled pattern may begin to improve past mid-August with faint signs that the Azores high is going to strengthen later in the month placing high pressure closer to western Europe.

My local weather on Saturday was sunny but hazy, and warm with highs near 27 C.

-- Temperatures will average near normal values.
-- Rainfall will be 25 to 50 per cent above normal.
-- Sunshine will be 50 to 75 per cent of normal.

FORECASTS

TODAY will bring some heavy downpours of rain in north central counties where 20-30 mm could fall over short periods of time, while further south it will be partly cloudy, breezy with isolated showers and thunderstorms possible. Highs 17 to 20 C.

TONIGHT will see partial clearing and lows 8 to 11 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy with a few showers and slightly cooler with lows near 10 C and highs near 19 C.

THURSDAY could have a brief dry interval with rain spreading north during the afternoon and evening, becoming heavy and accompanied by strong east to southeast winds 50 to 70 km/hr by the overnight hours. Highs near 20 C.

FRIDAY will bring outbreaks of heavy and possibly thundery rain with warm, humid conditions and highs near 21 C. Strong southeast winds easing to moderate southerly.

SATURDAY is then expected to become rather windy with partly cloudy skies and passing showers, highs near 18 C.

SUNDAY will be cloudy with a few showers and highs near 18 C.

The outlook remains unsettled for the week following, then slight improvements later in August.

TRENDS for the week of 8 to 14 August 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal to 1.0 deg above normal.
-- Rainfall will average 150 to 300 per cent of normal with parts of the southeast and east Ulster most likely to see the highest amounts.
-- Sunshine will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal, although near normal in some parts of the south.

FORECASTS

TODAY will start out sunny or at least bright with increasing high cloud thickening by afternoon, and rather light winds most of the day, but becoming strong and gusty by evening ahead of a rainfall overnight, with southeast winds reaching 40 to 60 km/hr by evening. Highs 19 to 22 C warmest inland west.

TONIGHT, outbreaks of heavy and in places thundery rain will spread steadily north, with 20 to 40 mm possible, accompanied by moderate southeasterly winds of 40 to 60 km/hr. Lows will be 14 to 16 C.

FRIDAY will be warm and humid with heavy showers and possible thunderstorms moving rapidly north in the early morning hours, followed by partly cloudy to overcast skies and further showers, possibly heavy in a few places. Further rainfalls of 10-30 mm in total, with some gusty southerly winds at times near south and east coasts mainly. Highs near 21 C in most counties, closer to 18 C in the northwest.

SATURDAY will be cloudy with a few breaks, and rather windy, with southwest to west winds of 50 to 80 km/hr near exposed Atlantic and south coasts by afternoon. Lows near 15 C and highs near 20 C. There will be further outbreaks of rain in the north-central counties mainly, and 10-15 mm additional rainfalls.

SUNDAY will be breezy and cooler with some rain at first, partial clearing later, lows near 13 C and highs near 18 C. Winds west to northwest at around 50 km/hr with higher gusts near the western coasts.

MONDAY will see some brief improvements with partly cloudy skies, isolated showers and highs near 20 C.

TUESDAY will become wet and windy with potential for another 15-30 mm rain and westerly winds following with gusts to 80 km/hr.

The further outlook is not very promising with another heavy rainfall expected by the weekend of 17th-18th.

My local weather on the other hand was sunny and oppressively hot again on Wednesday with highs near 37 C.

TRENDS for the week of 10 to 16 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal values, daytime readings may average a bit below normal and nights a little above.
-- Rainfall will average near normal in the south to 50% above normal in some parts of the central and inland northern counties.
-- Sunshine will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal values.


FORECASTS


TODAY will be partly cloudy and windy with isolated showers in Munster and south Leinster, where winds may be quite blustery, westerly at about 50 to 80 km/hr, highs 18 to 20 C. Further north, it won't be as windy until perhaps mid to late afternoon, but much wetter with frequent showers and risk of a thunderstorm, 10 to 30 mm rainfalls possible, with south Connacht and north Leinster into south Ulster getting the heaviest amounts. Highs closer to 16 C in these regions. The western coastal regions will see a rapid shift of winds from westerly to northerly around mid-day with some strong gusts likely, intervals of rain decreasing towards late afternoon and evening there.

TONIGHT will be cloudy with a few showers, moderate but blustery northwest winds and lows near 10 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with passing showers and cooler than recent days with highs near 17 C.

MONDAY will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain, some thundery and heavy in parts of the south-central counties. Lows near 9 C and highs near 18 C.

TUESDAY will be cloudy in the south with some intervals of light rain, to partly cloudy further north with isolated showers, and highs 18 to 20 C.

The outlook is somewhat unsettled beyond that with rain likely by about Friday in a changeable westerly pattern. Temperatures will remain fairly close to normal.

My local weather on Friday turned cloudy with a few spots of rain but nothing measurable yet, and some smoke from wildfires about 150 kms to our west. Highs near 23 C.

FORECASTS

TODAY will start out bright with sunny intervals for the eastern counties, but with increasing cloud before mid-day, then outbreaks of heavy and possibly thundery rain, 5 to 15 mm likely, and highs near 19 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast with a few light showers in the south and west, lows near 8 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy in the north to overcast in the south, with outbreaks of light rain by afternoon moving in from the south. Highs will be about 18 to 20 C.

WEDNESDAY the rain will move further north with some isolated heavy showers developing in the midlands and inland north, turning somewhat warmer and more humid, lows near 12 C and highs near 21 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with showers and isolated thunderstorms, highs near 20 C.

FRIDAY will become fresher with showers and highs near 17 C.

The outlook calls for breezy to windy weather by weekend of 17th-18th, highs near 20 C, and some rain at times.

-- Temperatures will average near or slightly below normal.
-- Rainfall will average near normal values.
-- Sunshine will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal.


FORECASTS

TODAY will brighten to occasional sunny spells for part of the late morning and early afternoon before more showers develop with a weak front drifting through later this afternoon, rather warm and humid with highs 19 to 22 C.

TONIGHT will be cloudy with a few breaks, occasional light showers and lows near 10 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers, moderate west backing to southwest breezes, and highs 18 to 21 C.

FRIDAY will bring more frequent showers or intervals of rain, 5 to 15 mm expected, lows near 12 C and highs near 18 C.

SATURDAY will be breezy with showers, mostly cloudy skies, and highs near 18 C.

SUNDAY will be mostly cloudy also with intervals of light rain, highs near 17 C.

MONDAY will bring some gradual clearing by afternoon and highs near 18 C.

The middle of next week looks a bit better now with some chance of warmer temperatures briefly, and more sunshine than has been the general trend recently. However, the models only give about three days of improved weather before it's possibly back to this rather autumnal cloudy and somewhat unsettled theme. No doubt there's some glorious weather over the horizon in September though.

My local weather on Tuesday was mostly sunny with a few cloudy intervals, and the highs were about 23 C. Full moon was rising at sunset, the exact time on that is 1330h Thursday 15th (or 1230h UTC) so the moon will appear full tonight and the following night, nice to see but poorly timed for viewing the annual Perseids meteor shower which is near peak (going back out around midnight in the hopes of seeing one or two).

TRENDS for week of 16 to 22 August, 2019

-- Temperatures will average about 1 deg below normal, but closer to 3 deg below normal at times this weekend, warming to slightly above normal at times mid to late next week.
-- Rainfall will average near normal values (now that heavier rain has just about ended today).
-- Sunshine will continue to be somewhat below average but this could begin to improve around mid-week.

FORECASTS

TODAY will see some partial clearing in strong and blustery west winds, but more showers are likely to develop after that and move inland from the west coast by mid-day and afternoon, winds westerly 50 to 80 km/hr in exposed locations, and highs about 18 to 21 C.

TONIGHT will continue breezy to windy at times with occasional light rain and lows near 10 C.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY will both be windy and unseasonably cool, highs only 15 to 17 C, frequent showers and gusty winds west to northwest 50 to 80 km/hr and possibly higher around Donegal Bay and Galway Bay at times (to 100 km/hr). Some places well inland and near the south coast may get a few sunny breaks and times when the strong winds abate briefly, so it won't be bleak all the time but then at other times pelting showers with hail and thunder are quite likely. Overnight lows will be around 10 to 12 C, so not much range in temperatures due to the windy conditions.

MONDAY will see some improvement mainly due to a decrease in wind speeds, the cool and showery themes will remain and highs will reach about 17 C.

NEXT WEEK has a somewhat uncertain outlook, most guidance suggests gradual improvement with a bit more sunshine and less frequent showers going forward until at some point high pressure seems likely to get close enough to Ireland to change the regime altogether to a dry, sunny and reasonably warm spell, but timing that is a bit uncertain, it seems more likely to be late next week or into the following weekend but could even be delayed a day or two beyond that, depending on how quickly this pattern change actually develops. However on some time scale the current unsettled and windy theme will be replaced by almost the exact opposite type of weather and it's possible that this could settle in for more than just a few days. For now, I would suggest Tuesday and probably Wednesday will continue rather cloudy with occasional showers and moderate westerly breezes, highs near 20 C, then Thursday and Friday could see a bit more improvement to partly or even mostly sunny skies, isolated showers and highs in the low 20s. Eventually there could be some days later in the month with highs into the mid 20s.

My local weather on Thursday was rather cloudy but dry, and the high was about 22 C.

TRENDS for the week of 18 to 24 August 2019

-- Temperatures will average near normal, but the first half of the interval will be about 2 deg below normal, then later 2-4 deg above.
-- Rainfall will average 75 to 125 per cent of normal, with the higher amounts more likely to be in the west and north.
-- Sunshine will begin to recover later in the period and overall it may reach normal values, but certainly a rather cloudy start.

FORECASTS

TODAY will be windy and cool with showers, or longer intervals of steady rain in some northern counties, further south there will be some showers with thunder and hail. Highs near 17 C and winds west to northwest 50 to 80 km/hr.

TONIGHT will continue breezy with showers and lows 8 to 10 C. Winds northwest backing to west 40 to 60 km/hr.

MONDAY will continue cool and rather cloudy but with a moderation in the strong winds, and less frequent showers. Highs near 17 C.

TUESDAY will be cloudy with sunny breaks, isolated showers, and highs near 18 or 19 C.

WEDNESDAY looks partly to mostly cloudy with stronger winds developing (southwest 50 to 80 km/hr), and showers or an interval of rain, highs 17 to 19 C. This rain may be more persistent in west and north, showery in south and east.

THURSDAY will bring gradual clearing and less windy weather with hazy sunshine and highs 18 to 21 C.

FRIDAY and perhaps SATURDAY will be hazy and warm with southerly breezes and highs 22 to 25 C.

SUNDAY at this point looks cooler with a brief interval of rain marking a cold front, highs closer to 17 C, but it would then begin to warm up steadily during the following week as high pressure settles in near the southwest coasts. It could get back into the low 20s by Tuesday 27th.

My local weather on Saturday brought a mixture of cloudy intervals and sunny spells, with highs around 24 C. This time last summer the region was choking with forest fire smoke, but there's very little of that -- in fact, in northern B.C. there is a mixture of rain and wet snow falling at low elevations and accumulating snow on mountain slopes. That colder air is stalled well to our north and won't make an appearance here any time soon (B.C. stretches from 49 N to 60 N much like the UK so there is quite a distance between us and the Yukon border).

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 3 deg above normal. Peak values will be around Friday and Saturday.
-- Rainfall will average near normal in the west, to 50% of normal in parts of the south and east.
-- Sunshine will average near normal amounts.


FORECASTS

TODAY ... After a bright start in the east, becoming overcast with light rain or drizzle already present in western counties moving across the country, with partial clearing following by late afternoon or early evening. Moderate southwest winds 40 to 60 km/hr. Becoming rather muggy with highs near 19 C.

TONIGHT ... Some clear intervals in freshening southwest winds, rain arriving on west coast after midnight spreading into northern counties and midlands before morning. Lows 10 to 13 C.

MONDAY and TUESDAY are likely to continue dry and rather warm with highs in the 21 to 24 C range. After that, the outlook becomes somewhat uncertain with some guidance prolonging the warm, dry spell and other models suggesting a gradual return to unsettled weather with near normal temperatures.
