No 07:00 109 at Ross Cross in the pissing rain this morning.

109A at 07:30 to dunsaughlin, more standing in the rain to get a 109B

Only back using this service the last 3 weeks. First time in 15 years.
Alternatives will have to be investigated.....

Drive to M3 parkway? Drive to Ashbourne? Sillan?

The 109 was a joke 15 years ago and it's worse now.

    Drive to M3 parkway? .

Always an option. You'll get a seat on the train and be in Docklands in 40 minutes. Only concern with the train is that they are not going to increase carriage numbers. Once they are finished all those huge offices down near the 3arena, the train will become untenable as well

M3 you will get a seat as said. And you will get a seat coming home you just have to make sure there early. Bus situation is not going to improve unless a massive voice of discontent is put towards NTA. They don’t care if you go to Sillan tours or what ever. You are still using a bus service and that’s ticking a box for them. Problems with BE have to addressed and fixed you do that by lobbying your local politicians for them to put pressure on NTA.

NTA are not fit for purpose.

The NTA decided the cost/benefit wasn’t there to refurbish the 2700 class cars in storage (a figure of 1M/car is mentioned in another thread), and the timeframe from ordering new cars to delivery is measured in years if not tacked on to an existing production run. Limerick-Nenagh and Limerick Junction-Waterford and maybe Ballina-Manulla being chopped would free up 6-8 cars which isn’t much for the backlash which would ensue.

NTA not fit for purpose, part two.

Echo all your thoughts here, as a former user of the BE service and now the train the situation is getting worse. The train is full with passengers standing from the first stop, carpark split in half by IE means it is now full and exiting can take 10 minutes.
The recent signal failures and the bridge getting hit in Drumcondra yesterday meant 2 -3 hour's to get home.
At Hansfield they are finishing off the release of 618 apartments so the train will be a sardine can shortly. It has forced me to look at the motorbike as a way to avoid the madness.

Lobby the hell out of politicians as there is an election coming, FG will put further pressure on commuters with carbon tax increases and reduce the benefits of the tax saver overtime. You should have a decent service to Dublin from Navan without having to use your car partway.

Folks, the only way Meath/Cavan is going to get a Public Transport that is fit for purpose and that doesn't tick boxes for NTA and BE is for people to lobby lobby lobby the **** out of their local political representatives.

I expected to see the NX mentioned but it doesn’t feature.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/2019/1015/1083518-bus-performance-report/

Performance reports on bus services have shown that the most complained about bus service in Ireland during the first six months of this year was on the Bus Éireann route 101X between Dublin and Drogheda.

479 complaints were received about that service.

In second place was Bus Éireann's 103X service between Fairyhouse and Dublin, with 345 complaints.

The National Transport Authority reports include services in Dublin from the private operator Go Ahead Ireland for the first time and the reports do not cover the whole six month period as performance targets did not apply while services were bedding in.

The NTA report shows the most complained about Go Ahead service was on the 104 route from Clontarf to DCU which was the subject of 155 complaints in the three months from mid-March to mid-June.

For Dublin Bus the most complained about service was the 84X from Dublin city centre to Newcastle, Co Wicklow with 65 complaints in the first six months.

On all services the NTA notes that some complaints may be about issues on the service or at bus stops over which the operator has no control.

On punctuality, Dublin Bus services on low frequency routes are falling slightly below targets. Punctuality in the first half 2019 was slightly worse than in the two previous years.

But the data from the NTA show waiting times on the company's high frequency routes are within acceptable limits. Reliability was within the acceptable limit of 5%.

For Go Ahead Ireland for the Greater Dublin area punctuality fell slightly below target on low frequency routes from mid-April to mid-June.

During the same period reliability was also an issue for Go Ahead as the level of lost kilometres was above the acceptable level of 2%.

On Bus Éireann, the NTA reported the company's services exceeded punctuality targets for the first six months of this year an improvement on the previous years.

On reliability, Bus Éireann's services were well within the acceptable limits.

Tales from the NX - ‘The buses either don't turn up or turn up full'

When Meath County Council launched its Commuter Survey in September, it’s aim was to get real insight into the habits of commuters in the county that could have a far-reaching and positive effect on the lives of Meath commuters.

The survey was for residents who travel outside the county for work with the information garnered helping to try and solve the issues that cause over 30,000 people to leave the county every day to work.

The figures threw up some interesting early results: Almost half (48 per cent) of the Meath commuters working outside the county, say they are hitting the roads before 7am most days. A further quarter leave before 7.30am daily.

A sizeable portion of that number is travelling to Dublin by bus and the NX service between Navan and Dublin.
In light of growing criticism around the issues of capacity and supply on the route, the Meath Chronicle spent some time at the bus stop in Johnstown (SuperValu) Monday morning to see first hand the issues of buses arriving full and the knock on effect that has on passengers.

6.10: Just two people stand in the bus shelter at SuperValu Johnstown, early arrivals for the 6.20 (from Abbey Road, Navan) NX service to Dublin. It’s a cool, fresh start to the day and mercifully dry before the day’s forecasted deluge. There’s few people about, and the most activity to be seen is from the early starters in the window of the Feel Fit Gym across the road pounding threadmills.

6.20: A Bus Éireann inspector arrives, zipping up his hi-viz jacket and is busy on his mobile phone. More people start to arrive all at once.
A dozen to 15 people are now gathered in the bus shelter, wrapped up against the cool breeze, earphones in, backpacks on.

6.25: A single decker NX creeps around the roundabout and pulls into the stop. These are the vehicles that have drawn complaints from frustrated commuters who claim that Bus Éireann are failing to provide adequate capacity buses at peak times.
Passengers make their way on, before the driver stops the last four intending travellers to check for spaces. The inspector makes his way onto the bus to assist.

6.27: The NX pulls away from the stop and looks to be full, with the inspector on board. One commuter tells me an inspector has been here over the past week or so, monitoring the situation of supply and capacity on one of the
    country’s busiest commuter routes.

6:29 Further down the route outside the People’s Park, one person boards. A minimum eight people are left behind at the stop according to people posting to the new ‘NX Collective Complaints’ group on Facebook which has galvanised into a dedicated number of commuters sharing real-time information on the the Navan Dublin service. It’s not all criticism either with many posting of pleasant journeys on spacious double deck vehicles and courteous drivers. However, its aim is clear: “A place to keep track of all problems with the NX route in order to voice concerns. The purpose of logging complaints here is to forward a list to Bus Éireann and Minister for Transport at the end of each week.”

Deputies Peadar Tóibín and Shane Cassells have also been equally vocal about the standard of the NX service in recent months.

6.30: All goes quiet here at Johnstown SuperValu. A worker for Adshell, the company who build and maintain the shelters and the money-making display advertising arrives to clean the unit and straighten a poster for Boo-Hoo clothing.

6.45: David Hynes travels to Dublin five days a week where he works in the IFSC. The 34-year-old Johnstown man says he regularly sees buses arriving into Johnstown full and is particularly critical of the single decker vehicles being used when more capacity is clearly required.

He’s late this morning, having just missed the 6.20 but he’s a bit more wriggle room than others.

“This is my normal commute, it normally takes about an-hour-and-a-quarter to an hour-and-a half depending on traffic. I’ve just been finding that in the last few weeks the buses haven’t been turning up, either on the way to Dublin or on the way back. The buses are often single deck buses and so there’s not enough capacity and people are not making it into work on time. It’s causing severe problems for a lot of the local population.

“I’m lucky enough in that I have flexi-time in work but I’m sure there are a lot of people who don’t have that sort of flexible agreement at work so it can’t be looking good for them if they’re not turning up on time.

“There’s been a lot of frustration locally and that’s reflected in the new Facebook group that’s been set up with well over 100 members now. Everyday there seems to be more and more complaints going in about buses not turning up or turning up full, there seems to be a lot of problems with it.”

We cut the interview short as the 6.40 NX from Abbey Road sweeps around the roundabout. It’s one of the newer fleet of double deck coaches.

6.50: There’s a lesser number of people waiting for this service and it appears there’s little concern of anyone being left behind here. The driver, with the help from the inspector (he’s walked back from the stop further down Metges Road), does a quick headcount to ensure there’s seats for everyone.

The bus pulls away, everyone on board and this time the inspector stays behind. The Meath Chronicle asks him for a chat but he politely points us in the direction of head office.

We understand this bus which left Abbey Road at 6.40am just managed to get through Johnstown with space for one additional person at Garlow Cross - with some intending passengers left behind.

This is confirmed by a number of passengers including 37-year-old Peter Heylin. “I was one of the passengers left behind on the Metges Road by the 6:20am service. There were eight people left behind on the Metges Road. Many of these passengers walked towards Navan try get on the next bus fearing it would be full also.” Peter himself walked back from Metges Road around the corner at SuperValu to the Athlumney stop in order to get a seat.”

8.04: David Hynes and Peter Heylin arrive in Dublin Connolly in a journey time of just under 75 minutes.

Bus Eireann move to add extra coach to NX service at morning peak times. An extra bus will be added to the morning peak NX bus route with immediate effect, Bus Eireann has told the Meath Chronicle.

A spokesperson said that since the middle of September, customer demand on the NX Dublin to Navan route has shown significant growth. “The vehicle type allocated to operate on this route is a double-deck coach that can carry up to 83 customers per trip. Unfortunately on a number of recent occasions, this vehicle type was not available to operate on all scheduled trips, leading to a reduced capacity for intending customers. The vehicle allocation to this route has been reviewed to ensure that all peak trips are operated by a high capacity vehicle.” She said that from today (Tuesday 15th of October) an additional vehicle will be deployed in the morning peak to cater for the significant growth and demand on this route. Bus Éireann would like to sincerely apologise to our customers who have experienced issues with our NX service recently and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused them,” she added.

109 this morning. 7:10 or so in dunsaughlin.

    Single decker.
Been a double for 3 or 4 weeks

So unlucky to the 2 boys at shire...

Matthew's seem to run a good service from drogheda to Dublin, is there anything preventing them from offering a direct service from navan to dublin.

I need to be on dublin for 7am so Sillan is not an option for me.

Are Bus Eireann second guessing the fact that the schools and colleges are off this week?

Was last week so no. Single decker again Wednesday, wasn't full so you'd be right for this week

Almost time for my biannual trip to Navan. How is the new bus stop working out?

Not great. It takes almost twenty minutes from when the bus enters Johnstown to the 'lets go out of the town towards Kells to come back into town to let people off'.

Planning at its finest, I can think of no better town in the world who can do it better.

After a couple of weeks living in Bettystown the short term answer is obvious. Mathews!!

What does it take to get them operating the N3?
A licence or just for them to decide it makes a profit?

    They are like anti BE.
On time, clean (spotless) and there is a plan. Start a route. Allow it grow. Provide a second bus. Provide more time slots.....etc
10 journey ticket for price of 8 with no time limit, taxsaver tickets.

They are competing with the train on the M1 and flourishing.

    Also the routes make sense.
    Not every bus goes everywhere.

The nx bus service, particularly from Dublin to Navan is nothing short of painful. It takes a full hour to get to Blanchardstown in the evening via glasnevin, finglas and m50.

How the hell can this be described as an express service. It is dreadful

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,031 ✭✭✭Slippin Jimmy

It's nearly as bad as the old service. The tour of Johnstown is what really kills it for me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 461 ✭✭kerosene

I would use it daily if it was a better service but probably only use it once a week now, I take the car most days.

When I do get the bus I usually get my wife to collect me at garlow cross. What should be a 10 min journey and get off at the mercy school, used to leave me a 5 min walk home. Now it's almost half an hour to go what is only a few mile and a good 20 min walk to the trim road area.

6:30 109 service from Virginia has had its route changed as it's now a BE bus doing it. Previously was a private bus on hire to BE. It now follows the 109x route exactly used to go down the Navan Road and across to Merrion road and onto Belfield.

Used to get to Merrion Row between 7:55-8:10 now it's 8:20-8:40 with a clear M50 god knows what it will be if there's a crash.

Again the old service was showing BE and TFI up for their incompetence on planning routes.

Changing the route with no notice was bad form especially for those who get out along the Navan Road.

Many times over the last few weeks the 17:35 pm 109 to Virginia has made it to Blanchardstwon quicker than the 17:15 109x.

Its an absolute joke that this shite of putting all services down the M50 in through Finglas is still going on.

Let's call a spade a spade, From all I see the majority of people who get on in Finglas are local dealers from Kells, Virginia and Cavan doing drug runs ? Didn't know Mr Flashy was behind route planning with bus Eireann ? As he seems to be the only one that benefits.

The 17:15 bus in the evening is regularly taking over two two hours, even when it is full it goes up the Blanchardstwon slip road surely the live tracking signs can say bus full?

How I miss the 30 & 30x but 90 quid for a weekly ticket is a bit much.

Anyways hopefully will be back to remote working soon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,542 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

The 06:33 109x from Virginia has always been scheduled to operate via the M50 and the Finglas Road.

The only 109X departure that is supposed to go via the Navan Road is the 04:53 from Cavan.

Clearly the private operator was doing "their own thing" by taking the Navan Road.

Incidentally, the NTA decide the routes all PSO services take - not Bus Éireann.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,102 ✭✭✭piplip87

Yes I just discovered that the other morning when chatting to the driver. Seems the private guy was doing his own thing. Ah it's not too bad once the M50 is clear.
