An active jet stream will bring bouts of wet and windy weather at times during the next 10 days. Precisely where and when the most unsettled weather occurs is open to doubt due to subtle shifts in that jet stream, as Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern explains.

A powerful jet stream will bring wildly contrasting fortunes across the UK this week. After a soaking wet start in the northwest, it will turn drier and warmer by Wednesday before strong winds and gales hit later.

There will be differences between north and south this weekend. Southern areas will have some morning fog and then sunny spells. Further north there’ll be some rain and some sunshine with a warmer feel on Saturday before it turns cooler on Sunday.
