Someone I know had a laptop crash and needs to reinstall windows 7 but never burned restore disks. Is there any legal way they can borrow a win 7 disk to do it or would it not work as the install is probably OEM.

Also is it true that some computers have the OS tied to motherboard so the install must be exact same one as they had? The laptop has the windows key printed on it and on the license so the key would be genuine but would that work with a borrowed disk.

Or if they could borrow restore disks for that particular laptop model would it work

Yes they can install with a borrowed disk. When the os is up and running but before it is allowed online open a command prompt(accessories-cmd-right click- run as admin type the following slmgr ipk (your number from the sticker )hit return allow the pc online to reg windows.

will that work on any laptop? I have a windows 7 disk from a desktop but it came with a Medion PC. Would that work?

It might be short of wireless drivers but could be worth a try.

This might help you out, official downloads from Digital River:

( i had no dvd drive and optical media is the work of the dark one - always somewhere else/cat has been playing with it when you need it most )

    http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-24395.iso 64bit Ultimate

    http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-24394.iso 32bit Ultimate

It will give you about 15 days to buy a licence key for it - this is great, gives you a chance to try it out properly and just get on with it

If you only have limited download ( 3G / wireless ) etc :

You can mount the .iso you downloaded above and delete the ei.cfg file, this will make it a "universal disc" - it will give you the choice of ultimate, professional etc

I presume they make separate .isos to help stop whiny gits installing the wrong version and then complaining that it won't activate and and and

This just removes the ei.cfg from the iso you downloaded :

    No

OEM discs typically install drivers specific to the model, so probably won't work, the disk download method like gctest50 suggests is the best bet, as those discs are "untouched". Install the version your license applies to (see base of laptop and the license sticker) then activate with the serial printed on the license sticker

    Thanks
you would burn the iso to a dvd as a boot iso? Is an iso program needed? Then mount in another computer to delete the ei.cfg? And then install it in the target computer?

Mount the .iso first and delete the eicfg then if you have a USB key
(and your computer can boot from USB - most can)

you can use this little tool :

    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msus/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool/

it will format the USB key, convert the .iso, and make the USB key bootable

then just put the USB key into the computer you want to fix and boot it up.

It should install away happily and give you maybe 15 days to put in a licence key
