Brexit impact on .UK and .EU domain names

25.11.2020 14:20 #1
As the Brexit transition draws to a close, it's crunch time for several issues. In the case of domain names, there are implications for UK residents who have registered .EU domains.

From January 1st 2021 you will not be able to register, transfer or update a .EU domain name if your address is in Great Britain or Gibraltar.

Registrants who wish to retain their .EU name will need to either
  • Update the address to one in the EU
  • If you’re an EU citizen and the domain is registered to you as an individual, you can ask your registrar to add your citizenship to your registration

There are also data protection implications for registrants of .UK domain names, who currently enjoy the protection of EU privacy laws. Deal or no deal, the UK will be considered a “3rd country” under GDPR from January 1st.

With that in mind Nominet, the .UK domain registry, will be updating their policies effective January 1st 2021 in order to cover the new data protection relationship.
