Hello,

We are looking to purchase a property where There is a PAYG meter at present with No credit left.
I would like to know how can arrange for topping up when we move in without being liable for previous account balance of course.
Can you also please confirm that there will be no re-connections fees (happy to share MPRN details offline)
Last question is how much will it cost for us to go back to a normal meter.
We are currently long standing customer or Electric ireland for gas and electricity

Thank you

Hi leonlafrite,

Thanks for getting in touch.

Is the PAYG meter for electricity or gas? (Or are there both?)

We just require confirmation of this, as there is a different process for each. No fee for electricity, but there is a fee for gas.

Thanks again,
Una

Hi Una,

I am pretty sure this is for electricity only but if I give you the MPRN number can you check if there is PAYG gas too ?

Thank you

Hi leonlafrite,

Thanks for your post. Just firstly, in relation to electricity: there would only be a reconnection fee if the power was disconnected by ESB Networks (due to e.g. prolonged vacant premises). The electricity supply being switched off due to the PAYG meter not being topped up is a different matter and does not require payment of a fee.

We recommend having the PAYG electricity meter deactivated when you move in, so that you are bill customers from the start. You can do this by telephoning the Electric Ireland PAYG team on 1850 372 372 or 01 8529534. It is necessary to be at the property in proximity to the electricity meter, as a deactivation code will need to be inputted to it. The PAYG team are available until 8pm Monday to Saturday.

With regard to gas, what we must advise is: if the gas supply is PAYG, there is a fee of approximately €200 to change to billing, as this involves removal of the PAYG gas meter (it is not possible just to deactivate a PAYG gas meter) by Gas Networks Ireland, to whom the fee is passed on, no matter which billing company the customer registers with.

If the gas supply - PAYG or billed - is locked for safety due to vacant premises, there is a fee to have it unlocked by Gas Networks Ireland (this is just over €70, no matter which billing company the customer registers with).

If the gas supply is registered with Electric Ireland, we can have a look if you private message us the address also, your name, and confirm in the message that you will be registering with Electric Ireland.

We will respond as soon as possible.

Kind regards,
Una
