As you may be aware from my earlier posts, I've been poking about regarding debit cards today...

Anyway... the significant news appears to be that Ulster Bank will be issuing new debit cards to all Ulster Bank customers from September 2009. They will be ditching Maestro and moving to the Visa Debit network. I suspect it will take 12-18 months for all customers to be changed over...

When they first mentioned it, they indicated it was a Visa Electron card which I got excited about and specifically double-checked to be sure. The person I was talking to double-checked and discovered it was the normal Visa Debit cards - NOT the electron.

so no cheap booking fees for online flights it seems... Wonder if there are any of advantages / disadvantages with the Visa Debit network?

UPDATE: to be clear, the change will result in your debit card supporting the Laser and Visa Debit networks instead of the Laser and Maestro networks.

Just received a card from a dormant account I opened with AIB when I started college 3 years ago.
Just wondering, does Ulster Bank have any plans to adopt this service? Seems like a brilliant service to offer. Along with the new app they released, it will sound become a staple in my daily routine.

Hi

I recently received my new visa debit card. According to the letter it needs to be activated by using it at a BOI ATM.

My problem is I don't live in Ireland any more but wish to use my funds while on holiday in Europe.

Is there any alternative method to activate my card as I don't want to make a special trip to Ireland for this reason only.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Since 2007 Irish banks have been gradually replacing Laser cards with Visa or Mastercard Debit cards. According to lasercard.ie:

Laser will be withdrawn from the market as and from 28th February 2014. After that date, Laser card sales will not be processed and shops will be required to cease accepting Laser.

Is there any current data available on how many active Laser cards are still out there?

The only data I can find online is that there were 1.5m of them in 2012, and that there will be zero next March.

I need to know if the number of them is significant enough that a new online business should support them.

Thanks

I was just wondering would AIB, be bringing out a VISA Debit Card any time soon?

Ulster Bank Ireland seem to be the only bank at the moment in Ireland with the Visa Debit Card - http://www.ulsterbank.ie/roi/personal/daily-banking/current-accounts/card/visa-debit.ashx
But I would like to know if anybody knew if AIB plan to release the Visa Debit Card, as it is much more useful than the AIB Maestro Debit card

Hi all,

So I decided that I wanted to use my Ulster Bank issued Visa Debit with iTunes, so naturally I fill out all of the relevant form and when I click done I get a message telling me that my card was declined.

When I rang Ulster Bank they told me that only Visa Credit cards could be used but I've seen a few people on here getting it to work and I was wondering if there's some trick involved (such as changing up the billing address, etc...)?

Thanks,
