Hi all,

Looking for some advice from anyone with experience in shift work or manufacturing.

I’m in my late 20s working as an operator in manufacturing for about 1 year 9 months. I’m on a 4-cycle 12 hour day/night shift pattern earning around €44k a year (~€600+ net per week).

On paper it’s good money and I’m living at home so I’ve saved a decent amount, but I’m starting to question if it’s worth staying long term.

Background:

No degree, but I’ve done a couple of QQI Level 5 courses

Currently finishing a Level 6 related to pharma/manufacturing

First job in this type of industry

Issues I’m finding:

Work is very repetitive

Applied for a step-up role but didn’t get it

Progression seems slow/unclear

Most roles still involve the same shift pattern

Outside of work:

Hard to build any routine (gym, driving lessons etc.)

Often tired on days off

Starting to feel a bit stuck

I’m considering:

Leaving for a more regular hours job (even if lower pay, possibly retail/admin)

Doing a degree or Springboard course to move into a different area

I’d likely be taking a pay cut which is what’s holding me back. Feels a bit like “golden handcuffs”.

Just wondering:

Has anyone left shift work and found it worth it?

Would it be a mistake to leave a job like this for better work/life balance?

How difficult is it to move out of operator roles into something more office-based?

Appreciate any advice.

Hi folks,

I've finding very difficult to get a job in my area here in Ireland. I don't know many people in Cork, and seriously, I've never looked for a job before, I had my first job where I worked there for many years and second job, I was invited to go work with them. To keep myself busy I've done volunteer work in disabled and elderly people, but is not my area.
I've 3rd level degree in Business Administration and have plenty experience with Quality system, ISO 9001, Document control, Six Sigma (I'm green belt certified), GMP, manufacture environment.
So, I thought, why not try to find somewhere to volunteer, I mean a factory.. a friend said is difficult to get a job in factories here because is all about indication from someone who already works in there.

I ask you, if any of you can help me, not to get a job, but get a work experience, where I can work for free, as volunteer, just to get to know better how does things works here in Ireland in a manufacture industry... I would be very thankful.Just need an unique opportunity.

Thanks in advance,

We're currently neck-deep in business planning and working out our start-up and ongoing business costs. We will be an online women's clothes retailer operating from Ireland, with clothes manufacturing taking place in Poland.

Our relationship with the postal system?delivery companies will be three-pronged as far as we can see it:

GETTING FABRIC TO THE MANUFACTURER

GETTING THE FINISHED PRODUCT TO IRELAND FROM THE MANUFACTURER

GETTING THE PRODUCT TO THE CUSTOMER

For the first part I think we'll be relying on Polish companies or those who have a ready-made relationship with the fabric wholesalers. However if anyone has any experience shipping from one location in Poland to another I'd appreciate their thoughts here.

On the second part, does anyone have particular experience working with delivery companies shipping finished product from Europe--or indeed Poland specifically--to an Irish warehouse?

On the third part, I'd be particularly interested to hear some opinion from online retailers based in Ireland who ship worldwide. Are businesses using a multitude of options depending on where they are shipping? For sending clothes, would An Post be the best option over normal airmail since these are lightweight items?

Thanks for any help any of you can take the time to offer.

Tesco Ireland are currently in the process of switching its source of international brands from Irish suppliers to UK suppliers to reduce retail prices in its Irish stores and basically bypass the Irish supplier and of course this is something that Tesco have every right to do.

However, very little media reports have highlighted that the key issue is that Tesco are now removing Irish brands from its stores to make room for a bigger range of International brands.

Tesco have already started removing Irish brands and Irish manufactured products from their stores in border areas such as Dundalk and Sligo, and I am reliably informed that a very large percentage of Irish brands and Irish manufactured products are to be removed from ALL Tesco stores over the coming weeks.

The information I have is that Tesco new policy is: products currently ranged in Tesco Ireland, but not in Tesco UK (Irish brands specific to Ireland), are to be replaced by a suitable Tesco UK alternative product.

As Tesco represent around 25% of the grocery market in Ireland, this new policy is a disaster for Irish food producers and I am sure this will lead to massive redundancies in the food industry in this country.

I work with a large food producer in the Republic and I am very concerned about my job as are my colleagues. On the George Hook radio show yesterday, Dermot Breen – Corporate Affairs Director of Tesco Ireland clearly said that Tesco are not currently removing Irish brands from their stores and replacing them with International brands, however this is in fact happening now.

I know for a fact that Tesco are working off profit margins in the Republic that far exceed their profit margins in the UK, so maybe Tesco need to look closer at reducing retail prices by reducing their profit margins instead of making Irish producers suffer further.
